toe_punt Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 At the beginning of the season I told my son that I thought the team winning the FA cup should get a 3pt bonus on their league points due to the extra effort required to go all the way to the final. Thankfully, the league did not consider that stupid idea, otherwise we might be in some deeper brown stuff with Wigan in the FA cup final. Oh well.......
The Kraken Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 They won't win the cup. In fact, its fairly likely they won't win another game this season.
DuncanRG Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 They won't win the cup. In fact, its fairly likely they won't win another game this season. You can tell last night's game has changed things round here, can't you? They were beating everyone 3-0 yesterday afternoon cause they 'had more balls'

Actually, I rather like this idea - just glad they didn't apply the rule this season! Maybe also 2 points for being runners-up. And 2 points for winning the League Cup and 1 point for runners-up there. It would certainly liven up the competition a lot.
kpturner Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 You can tell last night's game has changed things round here, can't you? They were beating everyone 3-0 yesterday afternoon cause they 'had more balls' How true
Lighthouse Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 I think a larger chunk of prize money for progressing would make teams take it more seriously. I doubt teams like Fulham and Stoke would put a reserve team out against each other if there was £10m at steak for getting to the final.
Whitey Grandad Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 How about a joker that you can play once a season before a game, doubles the points for that match?
DuncanRG Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 Actually, I rather like this idea - just glad they didn't apply the rule this season! Maybe also 2 points for being runners-up. And 2 points for winning the League Cup and 1 point for runners-up there. It would certainly liven up the competition a lot. It would be a sad day when the league had to act as a life-support for the world's oldest cup competition! But that's the way it's going, I suppose
SaintBobby Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 How about a joker that you can play once a season before a game, doubles the points for that match? Lol. Not sure about that. But I'm quite keen on making an away win worth 4 points rather than 3.
hypochondriac Posted 8 May, 2013 Posted 8 May, 2013 You can tell last night's game has changed things round here, can't you? They were beating everyone 3-0 yesterday afternoon cause they 'had more balls' Only alpine said that.
toe_punt Posted 8 May, 2013 Author Posted 8 May, 2013 Good for you. So that's how you rack up 18,000+ thrilling posts?
ericofarabia Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 what about a variation on The Fair Play League? - at the end of the season half a point for each yellow and a full point for each red knocked off. Stoke would probably be on minus points!!
Barry Sanchez Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 I think a larger chunk of prize money for progressing would make teams take it more seriously. I doubt teams like Fulham and Stoke would put a reserve team out against each other if there was £10m at steak for getting to the final. If there was a £10 Million steak in the final, imagine the butchers bill and the size of the cow.
trousers Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Do away with 1 point for a draw and 3 points for a win and just have 1 point per goal.
Cabrone Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 The winner of the football grand national gets 3 points.
brmbrm Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Bonus 2 points for the best pies please. Bonus 5 if the ******ers don't smell awful
terrasaint Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 I think if you did this, and its not such a bad idea, the extra points could only be awarded to the winning team. Otherwise you could get two teams arranging 6-6 draws.
September Saint Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 If there was a £10 Million steak in the final, imagine the butchers bill and the size of the cow. It depends who you meat.
Fan The Flames Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 My stupid way to change football idea is; if the attacking team kick the ball over the goal line or if the ball comes off a keeper the attacking team gets a corner, to get a goal kick the defender has to kick it out over the goal line. This would favour the attacking team, so if a shots goes just wide they get to carry on attacking.
scotty Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 How about a joker that you can play once a season before a game, doubles the points for that match? Thank you Mr Hall, just "guilty" or "not guilty" will do.....
shurlock Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 A bonus point for a convincing win. 4 points for winning by a margin of 3 goals 3-0, 4-1 etc.
Whitey Grandad Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Thank you Mr Hall, just "guilty" or "not guilty" will do..... He He! That's a great idea, double or quits on the length of your sentence?
Saint Luke Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 A bonus point for a convincing win. 4 points for winning by a margin of 3 goals 3-0, 4-1 etc. I've often thought that. Would make teams attack more.
Fowllyd Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 A bonus point for a convincing win. 4 points for winning by a margin of 3 goals 3-0, 4-1 etc. Or, to take that a stage further, why not do away with points for results and decide positions on goal difference, then goals scored, then away goals? Looking at the PL table, the current placings would change very little if this were in place right now.
shurlock Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 I've often thought that. Would make teams attack more. Agree. At the same time, very few games finish in such margins, so the impact would be pretty limited. Would also add interest to games in which a team is leading quite comfortably. Does a side sit on a two goal lead or gamble for the third, possibly letting the other side back in?
Window Cleaner Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 At the beginning of the season I told my son that I thought the team winning the FA cup should get a 3pt bonus on their league points due to the extra effort required to go all the way to the final. Thankfully, the league did not consider that stupid idea, otherwise we might be in some deeper brown stuff with Wigan in the FA cup final. Oh well....... in any case it would be illegal because not all teams have the same path the final. Once again a side without the wherewithal to compete adequately in several competitions will be relegated becaue they did not make PL survival their unique goal.
Aardvark Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Howz about: 1. FA Cup winners play off at Wembley with 4th place in Prem for place in Champions League - losers go into Europa League. 2. Europa League winners qualify for Champions League. 3. Abolish League Cup (or whatever this farce is currently called) Certainly 1 and 2 would at a stroke invigorate two declining cup competitions and give them both some real edge. Long gone are the days when the FA Cup Final was THE match of the season.
SNSUN Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Bonus 2 points for the best pies please. Bonus 5 if the ******ers don't smell awfulI apologise for ruining this for everyone...
Cestrian Saint Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Why? The FA Cup has nothing to do with the league. I'd rather see the winners earn a place in the Champions league because they are 'Champions'. Having a Champions competition that allows the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best teams in the league to compete is laughable.
Tom8558 Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Revamp the League cup and make it a national U21 cup with a limited number of overage players. Would make it more interesting.
Dr Who? Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 I like the idea of having the same points for each outcome, but anything over 3 goals you get an extra point! Mad I know. Wonder what the league table would look like?
Dr Who? Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Revamp the League cup and make it a national U21 cup with a limited number of overage players. Would make it more interesting. Arsenal would win it every season.
SaintBobby Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Howz about: 1. FA Cup winners play off at Wembley with 4th place in Prem for place in Champions League - losers go into Europa League. 2. Long gone are the days when the FA Cup Final was THE match of the season. If we keep the League Cup, I've always liked the idea of including the Scottish league teams (and maybe even the Welsh Premier Division at a pinch) and making it a British Cup. Obviously, no point in having Torquay v Inverness in round 2 - so keep the nations separated until, say, round 5. But Ranger v Newcastle, Celtic v Saints, Hearts v Villa etc would make it a much better cup competition.
Legod Third Coming Posted 10 May, 2013 Posted 10 May, 2013 My own view is the FA should provide a CL place for the FA Cup winner (or runner-up if the winner is already bound for the CL). It is their Premier League and they have one cup competition which they frequently undermine.
toe_punt Posted 11 May, 2013 Author Posted 11 May, 2013 They won't win the cup. In fact, its fairly likely they won't win another game this season. Really?
Saints boy in Leeds Posted 12 May, 2013 Posted 12 May, 2013 They won't win the cup. In fact, its fairly likely they won't win another game this season. Pardon ?
itchen_dan Posted 12 May, 2013 Posted 12 May, 2013 Revamp the League cup and make it a national U21 cup with a limited number of overage players. Would make it more interesting. Should be the same as the JPT where you have to play a certain number of regular first teamers (is it 6??)
Maggie May Posted 12 May, 2013 Posted 12 May, 2013 It would never happen as the Premier League and the FA are two separate entities.
The Kraken Posted 12 May, 2013 Posted 12 May, 2013 They won't win the cup. In fact, its fairly likely they won't win another game this season. Spot on punditry yet again Lawro's got nothing on me.
