Gemmel Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 A good few run ins over the years with his Utd team. It would be interesting to see how many points we have taken off them - I suspect it's more than many of the clubs that have played in the Prem and I don't think it's over egging it to say we could have - should have had another 4 this season. I see that threads have been closed and moved, but this is a Saints thread about how we have faired against him. As aside I remember singing "He's bald, he's fat he's gonna get the sack Atkinson Atkinson......And on the Monday he did, so maybe we played our part in getting SAF to utd :) Was the FA cup win at Old Trafford that went to penalties with Flowers throwing his gloves in under Fergie? Anyway - Some of my highlights... The 6 - 3 of course, the grey kits, Cantona punching van goble (After Keane was sent off) and Van Gobel, didn't flinch or even react, Beattie in the last minute at St Mary's, this seasons performance at both grounds, The game we lost to them in the cup, when we were League one (Thought we were fantastic) Le Tissier through Tabi's legs, Pahars nut meg and wonder goal against Stamm............... Probably loads more (Not least a personal one, when I went to a match in a wheelchair, but the least said about that the better). He seems to have always been pretty complimentary towards us, so although I can't stand the bloke, I wish him well, acknowledge him as the greatest manager of all time and know that playing Utd., will never quite be the same,
Batman Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 He said early on in the season that his time at united saw a 'mini' rivalry with saints Some right old ding dongs over the years

Sheaf Saint Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 Seem to remember a cup game up at OT in the early 90s where we played really well and had a perfectly good Neil Shipperley goal disallowed before losing 2-1. Also, didn't we beat them on penalties up there once as well, around the same time?
Colinjb Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 Good thread. My thoughts can be found in my latest blog. http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/entry.php?109-A-History-Shared-A-Saints-v-Sir-Alex-Ferguson-retrospective
Seaford Saint Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 I am pleased to see a thread like this one......27 years Wow! So many games. Did the Old Trafford tour a few years ago....the infamous grey shirt was on display in their museum.....the tour by the way was brilliant...2 tours an hour 50 people each tour, loads more just popped in and were buying .....hundreds of diners in their restaurent. So many nationalities all made possible by Sir Alex and his management....the end f an era and maybe just maybe, something for us to aspire to. My son and I drove home first behind the Man Utd coach after the last game. Without trying were were level with Ferguson and Phelan.....

Whitey Grandad Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 The 6-3 wasn't the grey kits. Weren't there chants of 'have you got another kit?' As they trudged off?
Right sider Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 3-1 in the grey kit, think 6-3 was the year before. My favourite night was at Old Trafford when Timmy saved Giggs penalty in the cup shoot out.
Lighthouse Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 The 3-3 game at OT was good for a laugh. Pahars nutmegging Stam and Le Tiss nutmegging Taibi.
Batman Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 The 6-3 wasn't the grey kits. dont think he is suggesting it is. 3-1 was the year before 6-3. I think we beat them 1-0 the following year too

saints_is_the_south Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 I remember seeing a league table of teams' records against Manchester United during the Premier League era shortly before we played them at the start of this season, Saints were around 5th or 6th I believe. sandwichsaint Posted 8 May, 2013 Share Posted 8 May, 2013 Fair enough, just read it wrong. The amount of people that get the 2 confused is very high. Second only to the number of people who jump in to correct a poster (and then admit they haven't read the original properly). You seem to do this quite often? As aside I remember singing "He's bald, he's fat he's gonna get the sack Atkinson Atkinson......And on the Monday he did, so maybe we played our part in getting SAF to utd :) Add to our part in him getting the job, it was also suggested at the time that a goal by a signing from Saints, Danny Wallace, in the FA Cup 3rd round (against either Forest or Oldham) kept him in a job at a time the vultures were staring to circle, they won the FA Cup, and that was the start of it. I also remember an unspectacular 2-2 at OT, in c1988, when Graham Baker scored with a 'hit and hope' that dropped from a great height, for one of Ferguson's signings, Jim Leighton to fumble.
