Yoshida is not up to scratch as a premierhsip starter, Clyne is, so is Davis, so is Boruc and Rodriguez now. How much did they cost?

How much did our failures cost?

Money wasted, we must get a football man in doing the buying and who knows the market, Les "I know **** all about club football" Reed is up doing the buying for ****s sake.

Oh player is only bought to fit in first XI every week, cause all you need during a season is 11 players...

Thank you, now I understand this game of football much better...

Barry must be such an unhappy man, after the amazing almost unique success of the Liebherr/Cortese years and our complete revival and restoration to the top league he is still moaning, what will make him happy?

Crikey! Bit dramatic. I'd say, on the whole, our transfer policy has been a relative success.

It's not perfect but who the hecks is? Even Barrys "football men" types get it wrong. Just look at Fergie and Wenger, both respected football men yet both have occassionally brought players who simply havent done it.

They have got it wrong but they have got it right more often, we got Mayuka and Forren and so e supposedly awesome Uruguayan as well, heaven knows when they arrive...........

He is quoted saying he only came here for the money, hardly instills confidence he bought (parden the pun) the Cortese dream, face it he's been ****, he does not want to be here and we (Cortese) have wasted money on a luxury buy we never needed, theres no doubt he could be a quality player but theres no doubt it wont happen for us as he obviously is not arsed, or if he is arsed then he truly is Gash.

Wasn't he actually quoted as saying he was excited by the fact we wanted to build a team around him and had ambitions of European football in the years to come?

I might want to ask what regime in Saints has been more successful regarding signings the last 25 yrs.....but I wont....so no need to answer.

Good post - it's good to know the things people don't want to ask, as well as the questions they do ask.

Now, I'm no expert, I've watch Saints for over 40years, but I was rubbish when I played, and would make a lousy manager, and I would say for most of the 30,000 who watch Saints that would be true. However, what do the players who play with Ramires week in week out think of him, the real professionals, who premiership status could depend on him. Well I have been told by one that they really rate him. He has a very quick 'footballing brain' that others have been finding it difficult to adjust to. I was told Lallana was the only one who was quick enough to be on his wavelength. It is just a matter of time to they become accustomed to each other, and then something special is expected.

Time will tell. Personally watching him I think we have nowhere seen his best yet, we have since occasional glimpses, can't wait to see him when he really gets going....

We also got Jack Cork, Boruc, Lambert, Fonte ... over the last few years our transfer committie has given us the tools to acheive two promotions and a premiership squad better then at least three or four of the lot below us. I'd say, success.

Forren may come good, have some patience, wasn't exactly mega money.

Mayuka again plenty outside in the football world fancy his potential, I doubt we'l take a massive financial hit should he not come good.

Ramirez could go either way, too soon to say. If he doesnt have a better season next time around fine, call him a flop, fair?

I'm a little bit late to the party but have i missed something - are we desperate for money ?

If so, then if money needed as squad needs strengthening then cash in on Gaston. If we remain in premier league and earn **** loads of money for the privilege then why do we need to sell ? He has skills but hasn't delivered as expected this year but the boy undoubtedly has talent. This 12m hasn't come out of my pocket and if we sell him and get money back, it sure as hell isn't going into my pocket so i'm happy for him to stay.

Would look at offloading a lot more fringe players before even looking at Gaston.

BS has already stated he'd rather have 11 'scrappers' than our team.

Seems to work for West Ham, who have pretty much secured their place in mid-table mediocrity for next season. Why aim for the stars, when the roof will do?

You shoot for the moon and miss your in the stars, shoot for the roof and miss you'll probably not get very far

That was definately one of the gayest things I have ever said

Hard to judge Gaston, brainless sending off apart, until he's had a full, robust pre-season with us. Tim Vickery in his BBC Sport column on S America hinted that Gaston's fitness was a problem and I suspect he'll get a two or three week break in Uruguay and then the club will get him, Forren and possibly Mayuka in training ahead of the rest of the squad. I think it is more of a stamina problem than anything else with Gaston, don't know about Mayuka and it's been hinted on here that the club want Forren to bulk up a bit to deal with the likes of Carroll and Lukaku next season.

Then I think we'll be in a better position to judge. It'll force Adam to continue evolving his game if Gaston improves his stamina and consistency because Adam's finishing needs a bit of work in the summer. Like Gaston, he's had good games but has vanished away from home at times although not as much as Gaston has. Who coaches the strikers and ACMs?

Good sides need dribblers. People that are happy to take the ball in tight situations and have the touch and strength to hold players off and keep possession. We have several and that's why we've been able to play such attractive football all season. I'm not sure you can play him and Lallana in the same team, but it's great to have quality in reserve. Whenever Lallana has got injured over the last three years we have suffered terribly. I'm less worried with Gaston as an option.

I really enjoy watching him. He has a great first touch and a gracefulness on the ball. He does things with the ball that no other player at SMS can do. He has a tremendous burst of pace with the ball at his feet that allows him to move into spaces and make things happen. Too often he hasn't taken advantage of this movement in between the lines, with his final ball letting him down. Get that right a bit more often and even Barry will be singing his praises.

I don't want him to be sold primarily because I wonder if we'll be able to attract a similar talent. If fans keep with him I can see him becoming exactly the player they all hope he would be this season. People forget he's still young and he has the raw ability to succeed.

Spot on. Hopefully, should he come good, he'l appreciate the fans/club sticking by him and show a bit of long term loyalty.

I probably know as much about the game as you, but to be fair, I have consistently said the same thing about Gaston for quite some time.

I see Chelsea's 20m, 22 yo Oscar has just netted his 4th goal of the season. Just saying.

His team-mate, 22 year old Eden Hazard, seemed to fare a bit better, being nominated by his peers for the player of the year and young player of the year in his debut season here.

Maybe some players are much more of a success than others? Just saying.

Ah yes, the 25m Hazard playing for the Champions of Europe, who had the whole pre-season with Chelsea and 29 starts compared to Gaston's 20. I know it's a pointless comparison, but still feel that with a full pre-season, and one or two better players around him, we'll see the real Gaston next year.

I was comparing Hazard to your mention of Oscar; you made the Ramirez connection, not me. The point being; some players adapt to the Premier League very well right from the start (from Hazard, to £10M Coutinho, to £2M Michu). Some players take time to settle. Some players don't live up to their expectations at all. We'll see which one Ramirez is.

Some players settle quickly, get a run in the team, fit in with the players around them straight away, and have huge confidence.

Others take a bit longer to settle, and some don't settle at all.

Excuse me for not writing a player of Gastons quality off just yet!!

Apart from Barry Sanchez I don't think many others are "writing him off" either.

Well I don't know about you, but I was posting on a Ramirez thread. Agree with your last three sentences.
