Never did get this hindsight sneering b*ll*cks.

I remember you saying something very similar when, in hindsight, we didn't f uck up promotion to the Championship as you predicted. And you said much the same last season when, in hindsight, it turned out we didn't fu ck up promotion to the Premier League as you predicted.

See you next season for yet more razor sharp foresight from you.

McManaman and Maloney look decent.

If we're serious about Europe next season then I'll pass thanks. Decent Premier League players but I'm not sure they would really move us on.

Posted

Also Stoke are now safe because of there goal difference. Hopefully if we don't get at least a point from Sunderland that might help as they have less to play for.

The Wigan players looked destroyed at the end, which is a shame with the Cup Final on Saturday just hope they can pick themselves up for that otherwise that will be a damp squib.

The dark flip side is if they beat Citeh that might put a bit of a spark in their stride.

Come on Saints just get the season put to bed Sunday afternoon.

he has gone.

I would bet had wigan won, he would be posting like a mad man

Obviously.

What was it he was saying earlier? Wigan were flying? I was getting mugged off? Funny how quiet I had gone.

See you July 1st with the inevitable red-faced foot stamping, toys out the pram, "why haven't we signed 18 players yet?! FFS, the management are rubbish, they don't know what they are doing. I'm wrong about everything I say but still claim I know more than the management, and everyone else in the world."

Can't wait, until then alps, enjoy your hole.

I couldn't bring myself to sit and watch this tonight, so had to go out.

What a result. This, IMO, kills Wigan like a stone. They're gone now. This was their last chance.

Oh well, they were going to go eventually after their years of hanging on. They just don't have the quality this year.

We'll still pick up a few points, but the entire bottom half of the PL has just breathed a huge sigh of relief. Thank you Swansea.

Two points from two draws would cover the improbability of two wins by Wigan.

Thats right yeah.

Totally amazed, I couldnt see anything but a Wigan win, never been so happy to lose money :-)

Dalek has also logged off as well. What a surprise.

Apparently, there's less to talk about when things are going well.

Apparently. That's what Alpine says anyway.

Two best defenders both out injured and it showed. Some of their defending was pure comedy.

I hold my hands up, I thought Wigan would easily beat Swansea.

It was looking that way for the first 45 minutes but Swansea actually decided they wanted to win the game in the 2nd half, and they did.

Wigan are woeful, they have a few decent attacking players who can strike a ball well but they are absolutely shocking at the back.

Lose at Sunderland and I bet you'll be back on the wet fanny case like a shot ;)

Yep, so how they'll be able to keep the score down against Arsenal is beyond me. And to now finish above us, they need to beat them. Not going to happen.

Six-and-a half times less likely to go down now than if Wigan had won...

Interesting piece of maths. I refrained from using those kind of comparisons because unlike the probability they're utterly misleading.

Except on the threads with people using REALLY stupid examples.

But everyone wants to be a drama queen... ;)

I would be amazed if they beat arsenal after a cup final, with all their injuries.

arsenal know that a result against wigan may well all but seal a top 4 finish

Don't worry, you can also be wrong about 10 of the other 18 results you needed for our worst case scenario, leaving us comfortably safe, etc.

Yep, it's not like this is a non-game for Arsenal. It's a massive one for them. They will quite simply have too much attacking quality for them.

I think they may try and hold out for a draw, but anyone on 39 and above is now a PL team next year. I don't think I'm being arrogant either, as that's assuming we don't even pick up another point.

Stoke would only have to lose a couple by 3 and Wigan win a couple by 3, a 13 goal swing isn't impossible given that the results required necessitate a minimum 4 goal swing to start with. We are of course talking about Wigan beating Arsenal here to begin with. But either way they'll know by the time they play us what they need to do, and odds are they'll be comfortable by then.

In realistic terms there's a bloody great cliff and then it's down to the 38s of Sunderland, Newcastle, Norwich... and then Wigan.

If you think this thread is neurotically long, Sunderland's equivalent is on its 130th page (well 1294 posts).

Perhaps that is where Alpine and Dalek have buggered off to.

Given the relative percentages, that still makes us more neurotic. ;)

Also, I remember saying at the start of the season that Dwight Tendalli was a poor signing for Swansea.

I take that back, and he can have a drink on me after tonight.

Just had a text off Shane (Dig Dig) who travelled up to the game tonight with some Swansea boys. He said it kicked off after the game by that same canal that there was a fracas after we played them.

Poor old Digs ended up being pushed in by one of the Northern boys and isnt best pleased. :D

Well, since he doesn't look like he has had any I wouldn't brag if I were you! ;)

Even if wigan win both, Norwich Sunderland and Newcastle all need to overtake us and of course we need to lose both games! chances of all this happeening are currently 250 to 1

Well bugger me! (Don't.) I wasn't expecting that! Well done Swansea but on seeing the highlights Wigan shot themselves in the foot with their defending. Awful stuff!

That's that then. Wigan won't beat Arsenal, not with their injuries and having to play two massive games in basically 3 days. Whether they win on the last day of the season or not, I can't see them getting more than 38 points. Even a win and a draw for them and we'd be safe on goal difference - and this is all speculation that we won't get another point. Which I think we will. 6 points now could mean 11th, and we'll wonder what we've all been worrying about! (Though personally I think we'll either get 3 or 4.)

Posted
So basically, if Wigan fail to beat arsenal. We're safe

Exactly. Only 6 points from Wigan would see us back in trouble. 4 or fewer for them and we're safe even if we finish the season on 39 points, as our goal difference is much better than theirs. (Pending getting spanked by both Sunderland and Stoke.) :-)

Looking up the table now, and I think 11th is doable, but finishing anywhere higher than we are currently would be a good result for me.11th-13th IMO.

This.

One of the great things about these sort of web thingies is you can see a person's track record.

Hindsight is indeed 20-20 vision.

But the joy of a forum such as this is that you can measure exactly what someone's foresight was....

Sounds about right. Hard to see us catching West Ham in 10th (their last game is at home to Reading). And we now can't make 9th.
