Sunderland vs Saints build up

I didn't say it was confirmed, but given he hasn't been training in the build up to the game this week and is travelling to England from Zambia on the day of the game - it is a safe assumption I think. Don't you?

A point for Sunderland means they are safe as long as Wigan don't beat Arsenal AND Villa (alternatively one of Norwich or Newcastle pick up less than 2 points).

A point for us means we only need at most a draw against Stoke to be safe. And we can lose* to Stoke if Wigan fail to beat Arsenal and Villa, OR Villa lose against Chelsea, OR Newcastle fail to win one of their last 2 matches, OR Norwich fail to win one of their last 2 matches, OR Sunderland lose to Spurs, OR we lose by only 1 goal to Stoke and Sunderland fail to beat Spurs.

This has 0-0 written all over it. :D

* Non-cricket score.

Shame if true, though a lot more confident after Davis and Fonte's performances last week.

Hopefulyl they'll atleast make the bench though.

Wonder if Guly will start.

I think & hope he will, though if we're being given time in the middle of the park I'd like to see Puncheon come on for a bit longer and see what he can do.

We will WIN on Sunday. I don't know why I think that, just an inkling in my heart. I'm feeling overwhelmingly confident about this one. The Di Canio transformation is wearing off, they've got big players out, and after stuttering form I reckon our lot will want to perform. Long journey up, great journey back for our loyal fans.

Or a draw, which I'd take now if offered. Head says a draw.

But 3 points would be sweet, keep us in touch with the mid-table clubs, make us mathematically safe, AND set us up lovely for the Stoke game. Let's finish the season in style.

Why So Serious?

Relegation is a serious business.

Fair play to you, mate, you were one of the few to stand up and point out the truth.

What do you think we should do when you're proven right and the inevitable happens?

Cos the rest of us are going to look like utter schmucks.

Help me here.

Please?

Not sure if this has been posted but a nice tactical view of our last game, could be some interesting learnings for Sunday.

http://www.eplindex.com/31750/tottenham-1-southampton-0-indepth-tactical-analysis.html

Having read that, it shows how increasingly intricate football has become, and how intelligent you actually have to be to carry out the managers pitch management. Those numpties in the stand crying out for the team to hoof it forwards all the time would be totally puddled reading that.

Sorry for the deviation.

What an interesting read, never seen this website before so well done to whoever posted this up. And Davis filling in as a front sweeper to cover Cork's surges fd, well I never.

Not a deviation at all - you are absolutely right. MP is undoubtedly a very shrewd tactician and what I like, despite a disappointing (and undeserved) result at Spurs is that he fixes problems.

If you watch that West Brom game again, you will see Jos being sucked into the hole between defence and midfield and this way out of position for the through ball. This was also our problem early on in the season when we just could not cope with the ball being pinged around our centre backs. I thought our defence was superb at Spurs and this article highlights a key reason why.

Lastly, as a huge Rickie fan, I do feel he has tired recently and we should consider more frequently bringing him off the bench a la Man City, Chelsea more often away from home. His fitness understandably isn't as high as you would want for a striker playing the way that this tactical approach demands. we need to strengthen in that area in the summer big time

A very interesting read and gives an insight into the tactical preparation that must go on behind the scenes.

I haven't really paid much attention to Sunderland's performances, but I expect we'll look to take advantage of Johnson's lack of tracking back. Also, after Di Canio's statements it wouldn't surprise me if Sunderland were a little bit too pumped up for the match and gave away a lot of fouls. Playing a lot of short, fast passes making the Sunderland midfield chase the ball, getting them frustrated might lead to winning a lot of free kicks.

I think that Sessegnon being injured is the biggest thing in our favour, he seems to create a lot of chances and link the forwards and midfield. Not sure who they'll get to do this job with him out. The only other alternative is to go for long balls direct to Graham or Wickham and hope that the wingers can pick up the flick ons.

Agree the complexity and the ability for each player to react to gaps or runs is immense, you can see though how half time and fatigue could impact the concentration levels which leads to more half time and late goals.

Another good website is this, lots of tactical and fact based predictions, its going for a 1-1 tomorrow. http://www.whoscored.com/Matches/615309/Preview

For a decent pint try Fitzgerald's, owned by the Sir John Fitzgerald group. Specialises in fantastic selection of Real Ale, with beers from local micro breweries. Its in Green Terrace in the City Centre. Usually very busy and lively.

Will be my 2nd time to Sunderland as the last time I went I couldn't remember the score

but I think Paul Jones got KO'd though and had to be taken off so will be good to go there

again as I like the Stadium Of Light too as well!!!

For those who are going what time Train are you getting as I would have gone from Chandlers Ford

near where I live but am going from Winchester to Waterloo, Tube to Kings Cross and Kings Cross

to Newcastle and on to Sunderland so am thinking of maybe grabbing a drink near the ground or

something so am looking forward to it tbh!!!

Am going for either a 2-1 Saints Win or a 2-2 Draw with goals from Lambert & Schneiderlin/Rodriguez

for Saints & Graham for Sunderland for 2-1 or the same scorers for Saints & Graham & O'Shea for 2-2

as I'd take a Draw tbh and 3 points v Stoke in the last game but we'l see!!!

It will also be interesting with the Touchline Battle between Di Canio & Poch as well so Bring It On!!!

Finally what kit will be in and where are people pre drinking too as well!?!

COYR!!! :D

Clyne vs Rose should be a great battle. Two of the paciest fullbacks in the league. I would play Puncheon just for the great link up play between him and Clyne to try and keep rose in his own half. Punch is also our 3rd highest goalscorer this season, and we have been struggling for them recently whilst he sits on the bench Boruc Clyne Fonte Hooiveld Shaw Davis Cork Punch j rod lallana srl (presuming yoshi and morgan are still out)

Knowing there missing 3 1st team players 2 of which are there best strikers, should prevent them from scoring and causing a 3-0 defeat like WBA, keep Johnson and Larrson quiet and were not going to concede, bar Rose there defence lacks pace, Jay Rod should have a good game today.
