Sunderland Vs Stoke Thread

Happy with that. If we can't get something from Sunderland, we should look at ourselves long and hard in the mirror. Relegation from this point would be a travesty, really. We have more than enough in our locker to stay up from now.

Now means that if we draw with Sunderland we stay above them and they have Spurs away on the last day.. Keeps Stoke within our sites. A draw is the perfect result. Even if Sunderland had lost the scenario would be the same. A draw and we're all but there..

A truly astonishing observation

That old chestnut, form, stats, damned lies and statistics.

Five games:

Reading A 2-0

West Ham H 1-1

Swansea A 0-0

West Brom H 0-3

Spuds A 0-1

Taken in the round you couldn't get a better run of 5 PL fixtures (admittedly 3 aways and only 2 homes), 5 points from 5 games = 38 points in the season = relegation.

3 goals scored in 5 games (and 5 conceeded in 5) makes it hard to win games.

We 'were' on a good run ..... our current, immediate form, as represented over the last five games is not really enough to take us to the points we need.

(Ignoring the Spurs 'performance' and concentrating on the result - if we play really well at Sunderland and lose 1-0 we will get no points for artistic interpretation).

So you consider our 8 defeats from 10 games at the start of the season better form than our recent form??

I would say they are massively irrelevant to where we are now.

We are in a two leg play-off with two of the poorest sides in the league.

We need to raise our game massively from where it's been the past few weeks.

We did do this on Saturday and were unlucky not to get a point, if we could score a goal we might have got all three.

I'm sticking to 0-0 or 1-1 on Sunday, which will probably be enough.

Massively irrelevant? To your argument maybe. You said we have hit our worst form of the season. It is not the case is it? The performance against Spurs was very good, and anything like that in the remaining two games will be more than enough. We are not in the worst form of the season - we have had one poor game in the last 8.

Di Canio said the game against us was going to be like a champions league final for them. He will kick them around in training this week, thats for sure.

Well, we are certainly going to see who has the biggest balls on Sunday. I am glad I am going, 'cos I couldn't cope with the radio or a stream or hiding in the garden.

Hmm. Lob in the two wins before Reading and you actually have 11 points from 7 games. Or 60 points over a season. Which right now would have us 7th!

He hasn't got too many players left to kick around. They've been unlucky with injuries and also, maybe, with suspensions - missing Fletcher, Cattermole, Sessegnon and Gardner is like us misisng Lambert, Schneiderlin, Lallana and Cork.

With 2 games to go (even if Wigan win their game in hand) we are 14th.

If we cannot raise our game and get one result from our last 2 games, we would deserve to go down.

Totally agree. There is even a chance to move up to 11th on Saturday with a realistic chance of a top half finish when we beat stoke. Any thing less, Cortese's will be in a real mood!

Watched the game last night and was not impressed with either of them. However there is no doubt that Sunday's game will be really physical, but I'm confident we'll be strong enough on that score.

The only guy who would worry me is Johnson - he looks quick and the way he cut in from the right wing a couple of times and shot with his left was not unlike Bale on Saturday.

Hope we sell out out our allocation - this is massive and I'll be there too

you cant write of sunderland too much

they got battered beyond belief at Villa and were 1-0 down with 10 men and looked to get beat easily

they performed really well in the 2nd half considering really

Will be interesting to see what the knocks were.

Adam Johnson looked like Cramp but a calf strain would be perfect.....

In the old days I would have feared for the mental strength of our players facing a baying crowd and high pressure game (think skatesmuff away all those years ago.

Now I think our new bunch will actually thrive on it, yes we play poorly uinder MP against poor teams but that can also be as much down to the lack of adrenaline fuelled by lack of atmosphere.

I just worry where our goals will come from as we sure as hell need to score a couple at least in these last two games.

Time for a Guly thunderbolt winner for true cult hero status I suppose?
