I know it wasn't that long ago I was asking about decent areas to live near Winchester, however I'd only been in the job I was doing near there about a month when I got offered a much better paid job in London which I couldn't really turn down. I've been doing that job a month now, commuting up each day from Bournemouth and to be honest I can't see myself doing the commute long term. It's 3 hours door to door each way and at the moment it's 'manageable' as at least it's now daylight when I get up and when I get home, plus it's still all new, but I'm not really a morning person and I'd ideally like my full evenings back at some point.

I'm not bothered about living in Central London as I want to keep my car, so outside the congestion area would be better. But will need to get into central London daily for work (London Bridge/Monument tube area). Also I'll be heading back to the South coast/South West on a regular basis at weekends.

Rent wise I'm looking at £1500 per month MAX (so I think I can get a decent place for that price) but great if I can find somewhere good for less.

So the requirments are:

  • Decent/safe area to live
  • Outside the congestion area
  • Nice area to go for runs
  • South West London
  • Easy tube/train in to central area

Someone at work is suggesting Kew/Richmond area, I've looked at a few places on rightmove and it ticks all the boxes, but I thought it only right to ask the saintsweb lounge for some other suggestions.

Cheers.

Come and live with me in Wimbledon/New Malden spudders. It's a great place to live, right next to the A3 so easy to escape for saints games and countryside. Plus the trains into London are decent, every few minutes and will take you about 30 mins to get to work. Plus, on top of all that, you can drive me to saints games!

Spend half that on a 1 bedroom flat in Reading and spend the rest on sound proofing your Lotus.

Brother lived until recently in Dulwich Village. Proper lovely and not too expensive. Quick rail links in to London Bridge (about 15 mins)

He was paying around £1300pcm for a 1-bed garden flat with parking owned by Dulwich Estates (who own most of the property close to the College)

Route back is Sth Circular/Clapham/A3, usually a pretty good run

For quick trains in - Surbiton, Walton on Thames (25 mins to Waterloo), Weybridge would be good choices and quick access to A3/A31/M25/M3 routes to Soton. (Walton to St Marys takes me 1:15 to drive.) Nice enough areas and tick your boxes.

You've been given the right answer already. Ticks all the boxes. Safe, plenty of pubs and restaurants, no pikies, the riverside and the brilliant Richmond Park on your doorstep for running, easy access to the M3 and if you're close to the Waterloo rail line you have quick access to the Soton/Bmouth train via CJ.

Best place to live in London by an absolute mile.

Ealing is good. Ealing Broadway offers regular fast trains into Paddington or Heathrow. Ealing Common also has good Underground links.

Nice small town atmosphere & shopping.

Only a short run round the North Circular from the M4

Pretty certain Luke Shaw would like it.

It has a Nandos

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, food for thought if I don't go and live with Toyko!

Cheers for the invite Tokyo, this is very kind of you. Before I say yes for sure, do you live on your own or with your mrs? If with her, what's her cooking like? Also can you rule 1 me by pm (not interested in what you look like though). Ta ;)

Same as me! In that case you'll love it here. Do you like good looking women that are hard to please, a bit moody but let you watch skysports whenever you like?

those 2 point highlighted come as standard don't they!

Good for strawberry picking. What's the travel like to central London? I'm looking to move myself later this year but the mrs works near Bank.

32 minutes into Waterloo, not too bad. I am actually moving this month as got a new job in Surrey so no longer travelling. You buying or renting?

Putney is a quicker ride into Waterloo by rail rather than Kew or Richmond to Victoria by underground. About the same rent prices. Depends where you are working in London to an extent.

I feel your pain with that commute mate. I used to travel Southampton Central - Waterloo, then Waterloo to Bank on the underground every day too, for 2 years and it was horrible. Never again! Before that, I lived in Canada Water which is SE London but nice... was a pain driving back to Southampton though as you had to fight your way through London traffic!

I would recommend Clapham as well. Good train links to get back down to Southampton. Very good social scene there and a big park too. Are you working in the City? If so, Clapham is good as you have the Northern Line which takes you to Bank and Moorgate stations direct.

Like others have said, Richmond, Twickenham, Wimbledown are all nice too. Though whilst you are nearer to getting out of London and the M3 and it is a nice area, it is a longer commute to work each day compared to places like Clapham so best to bear that in mind too.... though obviously no way near to what you are currently doing!

All the best in your flat searching

Oops that was supposed to be to DPS but New Malden isn't far either.

We're actually moving to Chertsey later this month as we can't afford/justify spending £600k on a 3 bed terraced house!

Was at the Swan bank holiday Monday, great place when the weather is good!
