Tottenham 1-0 Southampton // Post-Match Reaction

Got back about an hour ago, gutted to have lost. We should've had 2 or 3 by the time Bale put that one in. Clyne, Lambert, Lallana, Rodriguez...all had good chances to score. We just can't seem to put the ball in the net at the moment!

Very good team performance, we were all over Spurs and in the first half we were excellent. No real weak links and the players coming back into the team (Fonte, Shaw, Guly) all had cracking games. Lambert a little bit ineffective but that's because Verthongen is a great defender and stuck tight to him all game. Looked much better when dropping deep, just couldn't get that ball through to Jay Rod or Mayuka towards the end.

We can take solace from a great performance but slightly worrying that we're not picking up any points and not scoring any goals. At least at the start of the season we were scoring and losing!

One final thought, Spurs fans are faaaacking sh!t. Completely silent all game until they scored, at which point they sung our song for about 20 seconds and then either sat down and were quiet again or f*cked off home! Unbelievable.

Spurs fans seemed more interested in praising Saints players (or ex saints players) than cheering on their own team. Was oddly enjoyable until they scored. (Was sat with Tottenham fans).

Good day out, was very pleased with boys, despite the result.

I am naturally a pessimist so its squeaky bum time for me. But the lads I was with, All yidos*, were full of praise and thought saints were one of the best teams they'd seen this year.

Also, Mayuka looks quality, IMHO.

*I can say this. I am Jewish. So that makes it okay, okay.

Mayuka does not look quality, did very little.

Good point SuperMikey no one really had a bad game today, especially for all the players who game into the side. Thought Fonte was warming up the first 10 mins and then looked like a decent prem defender and Guly had the energy generally needed from him, even if he wasn't always in the quite the right place.

Mayuka does not look quality, did very little.

He looked better than some of his other appearances to be honest, the out and out runner for everything going forward is how to play him and we are getting better at feeding him into the game.

Unfortunately I think that was a space that Morgan would have been in to cover Luke when Bale cuts inside...

Think we did miss Morgan in the middle today to restrict space on the edge of the area. It's a role that Guly did well in the first half, drifting in from his wing and dispossessing players in the middle of the park. Think Steven Davis may have gone missing one or two times defensively but was good going forward.

Still, cracking strike though. Not sure many (if any) keepers would've saved that, struck it incredibly hard into the far corner.

He didn't though; that's the point. Boruc didn't have a despairing lunge, his arms seemed to be out there but the ball kind of went over them. Could have saved that I reckon, just didn't get his hands/arms placed properly.

He seemed well placed; the shot just looked like it went through his arms. Wasn't right in the corner of the goal or anything, he had every chance of saving that, I reckon.

Boruc had a strange game today. Flapped a bit and kicking was woeful. Also kept putting Hooiveld under uneccessary pressure which we all know will only end in **** eventually

We've had the same praise from others before, including Sir Anal, after losing at MancU, will mean f^ck all if we go down.

Should have been a midfielder covering that space infield. You could see Shaw thinking "oh f*ck" as he scrambled to get between Bale and the goal.

Not surprised there was space to be found, we lost shape and composure in the last 10-15 mins

It was a shot that wouldn't usually be saved, great effort.

Wouldn't usually? Or wouldn't ever? It was a good strike, no doubt; but I think Boruc got himself into a position where he could have got hands to it, but fluffed it a bit.

I'd like to see it again a few times in slow mo. But my impressions upon seeing it on MOTD are that Boruc could have done a bit better with it.

We were great today. Slick passing and moving.

The goal was all but unavoidable.

39 points, and great defeats, will not keep us up.

I've said for weeks that someone will go down with 40+ points and stand by that.

Squeaky bum time.

I pay $1000 a year house insurance. Doesn't mean I want my house to burn down, but it will soften the blow if it does.

Poor analogy. You insure your house, car, wife, dog etc. You never bet against your team.

I've never done it, but that's only because I don't bet.

I think people only believe you "don't bet against your team" if you believe in bad luck, karma, fate, god or the tooth fairy, silly stuff like that. If we go down Glasgow will pocket 5k, good for him. We won't have got relegated because he placed this bet.

ball was moving about all over the place, seen it from behind the goal.

Just watched it again. I still think he could have saved it. Not necessarily saying he should have saved it, it was a good shot that moved a lot. But Boruc was well positioned and his outstretched arms just seemed to miss it, the ball seemed to dip at the last moment. Unlucky for the keeper, I'd say.

Ok think about it, were we really going to win away from home at Spurs? No. The fact that we played so well makes it hard to take. We can't be disheartened now we played great so all we need to do is keep this up for the last two games and we'll pick up some points.

When was the last time we scored a goal from outside the box? It's as if we can't or won't shoot.

we shoot but we don't score. Lambert's 2 free-kicks were outside the box though. Thought we did a lot of good work yesterday, created a few good chances but the general knackardess of JRod and Rickie meant that they were never likely to get on the end of any of it. Great free kick again from Rickie though, turned onto the post by Lloris, Guly should have buried the rebound.

This is something I have been noticing quite a lot this season as well. The quality of our long-range shooting (Lambert's FKs aside) is really, really poor. Ramirez seems to be the only one who is willing to have a go from distance, but I can't recall a single time when he has actually tested an opposition keeper with one of them; they are either really tame efforts straight at the keeper or they end up in row Z.

Just rewatched in on MOTD. It came back to Guly at a terrible angle there was no way he could have buried it.

if Shaw gets too tight Bale goes outside him easily and then smashes a cross that they score from. Shaw doesn't do a lot wrong. He gets hius distances about right, but Bales acceleration and power is just blistering and he can't close the gap. Bale comes a lon way inside before shooting. A central player has to be filling that space.

Nah, you're pushing Bale outside onto his RIGHT foot, or you're showing him inside on his LEFT.

Come on, be honest, which is most dangerous having just watched all BALE's goals this year! It's not like a right-footed cross from Bale can find the midget Defoe leaping like a salmon! ;)

Cork was inside but had to track Holtby, maybe Jos could have stepped up?

It's all ifs and buts, but I doubt there will be many players trying to shove Bale inside onto his left foot from now until the end of time!

But I wouldn't fault Shaw, he's been a brilliant players this season - a little fitter and more confident, I reckon he could have got in behind them today.

Him and Clyne next season bombing on fills me with a lot of optimism.

it moved away and down, but I thought he could (not should) have saved it with some luck. He'll be dissapointed not to have at least got a hand to it, but that pace and degree of movement kills ya as a keeper. Balls too light these days. Unfair on keepers Edited by Chez

Guly should have scored that rebound and I can't believe Fox just let Bale drift past him like that it, it was shocking defending, almost like he wasn't playing. FFS

too many square and backwards passes form Morgan IMO.
