Tottenham 1-0 Southampton // Post-Match Reaction

Lallana played well today.

He worked harder yes but two wasted free kicks in good areas, a great turn and a pass back to the goal keeper and nothing else at all. Have to say though lambert I think has gone 8 games without a goal from open play. That is a big worry and he needs to spend less time hiding when we have a good position to cross. He has been like many players complacent til today.

What worries me is how former Saints players often return to haunt us. Can see Crouchie getting a hat-trick after doing nought all season.

more concerned at how much we struggled against Sunderland. They strangled us to death at SMS.

No he really isn't. Lallana shouldn't be playing instead of punch.

Puncheon had been up all night awaiting the birth of his baby daughter hence not starting, albeit it would've likely been Guly on the bench had Poch thought Puncheon was ready to play a full ninety.

Wow, good to see you'r calm and balanced on this one ...

Let's not let facts get in the way of a good opinion ;)

I dont think we're likely to agree much on this but will you not concede the chance he created for himself with the clever flick over Vertonghen was rather good ...?

This was the only time I wanted AL to do one of his turns. Instead he took the shot first time.....like we have been screaming fr him to do. Ironic!

Assuming the worst for our own games, Norwich will find it difficult to go above us.

They have to get at least two points from West Brom and Man City.

Newcastle need two points from QPR and Arsenal.

Sunderland would go above us as they play us.

Wigan need 5 points from Swansea, Arsenal, and Villa.

Well from that list I can see Norwich going down then. Very average team. Still don't know how we didn't win both games against them.

On a positive note if we play like we did away at Spurs & Swansea, I can see us getting at least a point agaist Sunderland.

We weren't very good at swansea. Second half was woeful.

Agree, hope he's fit for sunderland. If he plays like that he'l be a real asset.

some mug will still go on about him not scoring despite him not having played up front for years

That makes me ****in angry. We are playing so well (wba excepted) but are still in bother. I just can't help thinking that if you publicly announce your champions league ambitions for next season whilst your team are still not safe from relegation this season - no matter how well they might be playing - you are setting yourself, your club and your fans up for the mother of all falls.

Lallana's form for the nest 2 games is key. We need that spark of creativity in midfield, and with Gaston suspended he is the only guy that can do it

I thought he had an on/off game today.

We need an end product from him, sadly lacking for too long.

Pedantic, but none of the teams below us have to win all their remaining games to avoid finishing 18th were we to lose our remaining two.

Nothing pedantic..

and i did not say they did, just pointed out that, it seems to be assumed all other teams will be better than us

He has missed the odd chance and im still not sure how much longer i'd like to see him on the team sheet but, for the rest of this season at least, he certainly can still do a job and surely has a point to prove ;)

A few weeks ago I'd managed to convince myself that the bad memories from earlier in the season such as Stoke coming back from 3 - 1 down, Wigan last gasp equaliser, Man Utd last gasp win, QPR and Sunderland lose at home were of no consequence. Unfortunately these could still come back to haunt us.

West Brom have really come into play in the run in against us, the table would look so much better if they had at least drawn with Wigan today, I fear that Norwich will beat them next week.

Unless we get more than point in the next 2 matches Norwich and Newcastle only need 1 win, Wigan win 2 out of 3 and Sunderland 1 out of 3 (goal difference could change) to overtake us, yes it has to be a lot of results going against us but looking at it team by team not that unlikely.

Saints always put us through the wringer, I was looking forward to having a more relaxed end of the season. We are Southampton we do it the hard way.

Lallana created a couple of good chances unfortunately he had to try to finish them himself and he always chokes in front of goal. Just can't see what his problem is there.

Just worked it out, that if we held on for the point today, and presuming that arsenal beat Wigan and Chelsea beat villa, we would be safe, as the last game of the season, Wigan would need to beat Villa, where villa would need a point to go above us.

So I go back on my post earlier in the thread and think a point next week, will be massive!

They could both be above us before the last day, as Villa already are of course. This argument is not valid any more because Villa have had a great run and Wigan are doing what Wigan do, remember they won 5 of their last 6 last season. Our best bet at the moment is to hope Rangers do the business against Castille Nouveau.

Yeah, I'm assuming we get at least a point against Sunderland and all other results go in our favour.

For me, the concern is we look a little toothless. pretty football in the middle of the pitch with no end result.Rickie in particular doesn't look like scoring from open play and hasn't done for a few games. Having said that we deserved at least a point today. Clyne missed a sitter!

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino: "I do feel we deserved a lot more, we should have got at least a draw, a win would have been well deserved but we go home with nothing. I am disappointed about the result.

On Gareth Bale: "When a team has a player of those characteristics, they can light up those moments, there is nothing you can do against that.

"We have competed very well and played very well, we have controlled the game for large periods and I am happy with the performance of my team but we are really angry because we have not got anything from this game."

we just don't hit teams on the break. Morgan's goal at Wigan and Rodriguez's against City are about the only breakaway goals this season. It's thre price we pay for playing Lambert. We win elsewhere of course.

This. There was a moment in the second half today when the ball was played out to Lambert on the left wing, and had it been someone with pace who could run past the defence we would have had a great opportunity to break and get in behind them. For all his plus points, Lambert slows down our attacks far too much and allows defenders to get back and regain their shape before we get the chance to stretch them.

I'm sure i'll get blasted for it but I'm not convinced Rickie's got what's needed at this level. I love him to bits but I seriously think we need to look at replacing him this summer (if we stay up!)

Anyone seriously thinking we will go down should cash in at Bet365 who have us at 40-1

Win at Sunderland we should be mathematically certain by then

Draw and we will be virtually certain

Lose it will be in our hands versus Stoke.

I agree. He's good enough for a PL side looking for lower league safety. He's not right for a team looking to get into the top ten; and his whole style of play demands that we play through him more often than not. Sadly I don't think JRod is ready to do a better job instead of him, so we need to be splashing out a good deal in the summer.

We are in deep sh*t. What a time to suffer a complete loss of form.

Find it bizarre that some of you are still saying we are safe. The same ones of you that are making completely wrong predictions about the remaining games.

Wigan will go above us. They just beat away the team that tore us a new arsehole last week.

At the end of the day, if the teams around us show a bit of balls, considering our complete lack of them, we will go down.

Not an unexpected result and we played well enough for a point. All the hurt is coming from Villa and Wigan wins. But if we were looking at other teams about to play us, when stats like: haven't scored in X no. of games, or so and so hasn't scored for X games, then we would be expecting said team to score, such player to score. Therefore I expect Jay Rod and Rickie to get a couple each next week, and us to win 4-1, the other results to go our way, and time for the other teams' forum sites to go into meltdown.
