Mauricio Pochettino: The Argentine at Southampton with big plans

Best part is about Cortese.

"And if we look back to the past few years he has done an amazing job. Perhaps the most popular person at the club should be him."

So true!!

I agree. I remember in 1984 when we finished second and had fantastic young team packed full of internationals scoring goals for fun. When my dad took me to the club shop one bright Spring morning that year with th intention of buying a Patrick cagoule and perhaps a couple of posters for my bedroom of my favourite players, Peter Shilton, Mark Dennis, Steve Moran, Danny Wallace etc, I told him I wasn't interested. The poster I wanted on my wall was of Then chairman Alan Woodford as without him none of this would be possible. That season my dreams of becoming proffesional footballer died out, I wanted to be a chairman. In the playground at school whilst the other kids were pretending to be Saints, Man united and Liverpool players, playing football, I'd be sat on the benches, watching the game in my trench coat, pretending to be,y hero counting my pennies wondering if Andy Charlton from the U9s playing with his age group on the pitch next to us would drop down an age group if I offered to give him 20p a week.

When are you going to write your memoirs?

Little snippets like this snapshot into your past are wonderful, and strikes a cord with me.

I remember being devastated to find out that they didn't have any posters of the kitman who used to catch the balls that were bowled out to him on the touchline by Eric Martin at the end of pre match kick arounds at The Dell. The final straw was no trendy designer, Saints logo'd sacks being available. Our marketing people have come on in leaps and bounds since then.

I agree, unless you experienced football pre 1992 I don't think you can truly appreciate that the most important people at football clubs were ones who never kicked a ball, after the dark days of Lowe I'm glad to see that we are retiring to honour back office staff as they should be. I recall a recurring dream when I was a kid, it was John Motsons commentry over the sound of a cheering crowd and Motty hardly able to contain his excitement as he exclaimed 'that's a great invoice signed off by Woodford!'maybe kids today can experience similar dreams as we have a like minded guy back in charge.

Two things struck me from that article; Players need two lungs - hence why we looked knackered on Saturday; Cortese calls him 4 times a day - Have you arrived? Is everyone there? Has anyone been injured? Is Guly OK?

Spanish Armada on its way then.

"Now the players talk of needing two lungs to play for the manager,"

Not really too much to expect of a professional footballer is it?

Yeah, clearly that should've been two hearts based on something Schneiderlin recently said.

We had better stay up!

Verdu was one of the players that 1st came into my mind. Out of contract at Espanyol.

To announce that two signings to come in would suggest he would have a close contact to one or both.

Perhaps Verdu is one and someone who he has managed in the past or Cortese has wrapped up the Astori one.

Verdu to take Steven Davis role and Astori for Jos.

Leaves us with two maybe's which would be a LB & winger/striker.

Let's have four quality players in and the rest being our current youth players to flood the squad.

Interesting that Pochettino supposedly declined the chance to sign any more players in January. Puts a different spin on the flap some got into on here when it became clear we were sticking with what we had.

Aside from a CB, I struggle to think who we could've realistically brought in during the January window that would've had a massive impact on our squad. The resurgence of Jay Rod, Artur Boruc and Steven Davis have been hugely influential - and these were players who we already had at the club.

I thought we (Pochettino) tried to sign Coutinho in Jan, only for him to turn us down in favour of Liverpool.

I think that was an italian paper story. I saw an interview on the show Premier League World with Coutinho and he said that he never heard anything from Southampton and talked with MP after the signing with Liverpool was done.

I agree. It probably wasn't the right time to sign Forren so another CB would've been handy, but overall it was probably better to let the squad settle.

Alpine will be most pleased that it looks like deals are being worked on heavily already.

I would hope we can get at least two in for the start of pre season, one of them a top centre back.

I am indeed. What a breath of fresh air. I hope they come off.

I just wonder if MP knows that Vectis Saint will be so angry with him for breaking the perceived wisdom that transfers are only allowed in the last couple of days of August

Seemed to me last close season that the delay in making signings was not due to the manager but was the 'transfer committee' or the chairman. It's good to know that Pochettino has identified his targets but that doesn't necessarily mean the club will sign them. On the other hand the awful start last year may have taught a lesson to the people making those decisions; that the manager must be supported.

Yep. NC aint stupid, and it appears he is a fast learner (and maybe also like me thinks the mad scramble at the end of August is b*ll*cks)

wasn't the transfer committee who decided we didn't need a new front line keeper last summer. Adkins was supported on that...unfortunately for us.

Was the signing of Forren a move made by Adkins or Pochettino?!

The article suggests that Pochettino declined to bring anyone in, but Forren joined in January. He must have been Adkins' last signing and could explain, why he hasn't made his debut yet.

I don't think he was signed by either of them. I think NA was a bit ****ed off by the signing "you are asking the wrong person" and MP was pretty much told he has almost signed, do you object, there was a delay of a day or so and then he signed.

because according to an article at the time Forren wanted to be sure that the manager (Pochettino) wanted him to sign.

yeah I remember that. Think his file was given to MP, they said we are 99% near completion on this deal, any objections.

I'm a bit younger than you so I was more of an Askham man.

That brilliant young team he put together in the 88 - 90 was the reason I became a Saints fan. The Askham Attack they were known as in Bellemoor school.

Le Tissier was the main player. I forget the rest of them, but that was a Chairman on top of his game.

I know it went sour after that but what memories we have of that early chairmanship.
