Ah, bless, it's a year since the last thread on this :)

memory - mate with his Fiance, Bobby scores he is screaming and crying and she says "It's only a goal, stop being stupid you're embarrassing me"

And no, the marriage didn't last

Have you had a day with Saints that surpassed that day though, I know I havent, had some brilliant days but to me this is the best. The FA cup still had its magic then, we were the underdogs and like 2003 our fans were amazing.

Yes I was there but memories of the game are hazy, nothing to do with alcohol, it was all just a blur but I remember driving home on the motorway and people crowding every bridge to wave and cheer each car, as if we'd won it ourselves, and that's what it felt like.

11 years old watching it on our black and white telly with my red and white scarf wrapped around it.

Longest 8 minutes of my life after we scored.

Rubbing it in to my Liverpool and Manure supporting mates at school on the Monday.

Wish I'd been older and able to drink. Would have been an even bigger blast.

12 year old son watches the DVD every now and then - loves it.

I was there. Remember feeling sick after the goal until the whistle blew. The whole thing seemed surreal. The Cup Final was so much bigger in those days as a national event and all the neutrals wanted us to win. I remember riding back though London on my motorbike with a friend on the back, with our colours on, and people in the street were waving and shouting congratulations as we went by.

The most money I ever made gambling as my pride would not allow me to turn down the countless bets from all the Man U fans around me at odds of 6-1.

We had to win or I would have been bankrupted at the age of 17!

The relief, the Joy the tears when the goal went in and the bitten fingernails over the remaining 8 minutes till the whistle went will be with me forever! An emotional rush that has never been repeated! What a day, perfect hot weather, perfect result, and loads of money to boot! I also have a programme signed by the full saints squad as a memento I still treasure!

I was there in D9 - the ticket cost £5.00. I was 17 at the time and went up on one of Clive Foley's coaches. What a great day. I was too young to drink so remember it it all so clearly - much more so than in 2003 which is just a blur!!!

We were outnumbered 3:1 by man Utd fans but we made a lot of noise and as Lady Saints says, that was the greatest day of supporting Saints in our lives so far. We weren't given a chance - jack Charlton had predicted 6-1!!! It was a nervous start but after 20 minutes or so you could sense the team start believing they could do it and Channon was magnificent. Once United made their sub (you were only allowed one each in those days) we knew we had them riled and after 83 minutes ....... well the rest is history.

This.

Maybe people on the bridges thought we were the team coach, as my Blue Peter Special, home made life sized FA Cup complete with Yellow and Blue ribbons was on the the front window next to the driver!!

The game itself is just a blur. remember getting goosebumps when the players came out of the tunnel.

The first 20 mins were a bit worrying, but o

ur experience began to tell.

From my position on the terraces I knew Stepney was not going to save the shot from Stokes and was already in the rafters before the ball hit the back of the net!!

Luckily for me and my heart, I missed the next goal attempt at the other end (did they hit the crossbar?) as I was still dancing around like a loon!!

Missed out on the pub extensions and general meyham down town as after a few swift ones in The Eastleigh dashed to my mates house to watch MOTD - no video / computers for us back then!!

It wasn't so much the Cup Final itself, it was the match, the Open Top Bus and Guildhall and then the best bit of all for me Micky Channon's testimonial. What a night that was.

Happy Days indeed.

RIP Bobby, Ossie and Ted.

I had a video made as my grandfather had an early recorder the match covered two complete tapes and each tape was the size of a big book! Still have them somewhere not sure they could be played back now! they had all the post match BBc interviews/celebrations with the players in the changing rooms too!

Sat in the lounge with my parents and baby brother infront of a black and white TV , I was only 3. Remember parents going mental when we scored and the baby started crying . Didn't understand much about it at the time but for some reason I can picture that moment very clearly. Also sat on Dads shoulders watching the bus tour shortly after with my yellow and blue rosette with the tinfoil cup in the middle

Was 21. Spent the last 7 mins sat down on the terrace high up behind the goal just crying with more happiness than I could ever then have imagined, knowing we were going to win. Total emotion created by the moment and being pi**ed since 9.30. Went on a coach from Totton which visited and was thrown out of at least 3 pubs en route, on board toilet facilities consisted of a plastic meat tray sent from the back along the aisle for contributions before contents being tipped over a Man U car somewhere on the North Circular. It was the 70's though.

22 YEARS old , money in my pocket and single. Left home to go up the Pub on Friday night returned home briefly Sunday morning and then out again until Monday late.

Went by Car with 6 mates. so it had been car to Villa, Coach to West Brom, Escort Van to Bradford and Train to Palace.

Remember having to hide tickets in socks in Pub, because the area was just jammed with want to be Mancs after tickets.

Arrived at Wembley only to be involved in battle with Kev Coombes against a load of Mancs who tried to get at us outside turnstiles.

Got in and was stood right above tunnel, out numbered 3 to 1 but sung our hearts out, whilst dodging coins from the lower section.

Nervous whole game but longer it stayed at nil nil more confident we became.

Then the goal, all i could think off was how long left.

Luckly Clive Thomas blew his whistle on time and we had the cup.

By the time we got out most Mancs had moved to the Tube station or just gone.

Got in Car, back down the M3 and into Town for the biggest street party the Above Bar has ever seen.

Hundreds if not thousands outside Woolies

Magic

18 and I put my ticket in my boot (DM) as well! Just remember the traffic jams from Chandlers Ford (no M3!! lower down) round the North Circ and couldnt wait to get in the stadium, up on the upper level. Strangely never felt that nervous about Manure as I was convinced we were going to win. But the euphoria when that goal went in, fell down several rows of terrace, it was moving! Fantastic last 10 minutes then seeing the Cup glint as Queen handed it to Pete. Got back to Lymington in time to watch MOTD with my scarf still round my neck, and then lived it all again on Sunday and Micky's game v QPR. Saints fans love fest the like of which we may never see again, but hope we do!!

I was 14 and my biggest memories apart from the game itself were of the people draping flags over the road bridges and waving at the fans on our way up to Wembley. Also, OWTSGM being sung at full volume in Fleet services after we won the Cup. The FA Cup in those days was THE trophy. Everyone throughout the country used to watch it and cheer the underdog on. The old Wembley seemed so huge, and the noise of 100,000 people made the terraces vibrate. For a young kid it was like going to the promised land....but better. It was the best day of my life, no question. Don't tell the wives!

I couldn't get a ticket because I had stopped going a few weeks prior. It's the only day in my life that I suddenly ran outside the house and started screaming and yelling. It was quite a surprise to see others doing the same.

On that day, I was working.... in Southsea .....NO ! - not Portsmiff'.....Southsea....and surrounded by Man.U " fans ".

As I couldn't get the day off.....or a ticket for the game, I put my fiver on Saints... at 4-1.....not the biggest win I've ever had, but the most satisfying.....:adore:

Happy Days.

Coach back to Welcome Inn Bishopstoke back about 10.

Landlord bought down old black & white portable TV from upstairs.

Plonked it on the bar billiard table to watch Match of the Day.

Mild and Marstons bitter flowing. Pedigree?

All smoking Guards, Players, No 6, Extra.

Probably had a Vestas Curry when I got home.

Happy Days!

Couldn't go to the match, but I DID go to the "It's a knockout" at the Sports Centre..........I just wish the FA cup was as big a deal today as it was back then. There is much less effort made. It was an all day deal on TV......If we win it again, it will NOT be quite the same.

Misconceived.

Is there really any need for that sort of comment on a decent thread? It's a shame some people have to be so childish.

Some good posts on here, especially enjoyed 70s Mikes.

As others have said, the greatest ever day of Saints supporting history (for me). I went to every game on that run (except Villa away) so for an impressionable 16 year-old, and being such an important trophy in those days, I still get goosebumps :-) I remember the journey home down the M3 and the day after in Shirley High Street and then the Civic Centre gardens so fondly.

Was I on one of Foley's coaches? Can't actually remember if we were picked up in Southampton or Salisbury now. eek.

I DO remember that even with the huge jams on the North Circular we were about the 3rd or 4th Saints coach into the car park. It was like a sea of Mancs around us VERY scary at the time. I remember being p1ssed off that "my mate" Steve had got two vouchers and bought a ticket for his missus, I had to do the Car Park camping overnight gig.

Our bus certainly went and dropped people off in Southampton - will never forget cars parked and the people dancing in the middle of Chilworth Roundabout. What I DO remember is getting to the Fox & Goose in Coombe Bissett 10 seconds AFTER the Landlord had called last orders. I downed my ONLY beer of the day in about 20 seconds and raced home just as the MOTD theme started.

My Mum was STILL in tears "Oh how you sang" was all she said. Watched the game with a can of something horrid from the Pub (Watneys Red Barrell I expect) then exhausted to bed.

Next morning up at the crack of dawn, found the leads for the old portable telly, left Coombe picked up my mates in my Mum's Marina estate (those were the days eh!) (I passed my test 3 days before the Bristol Rovers Away game (last game before the final I think)

We got to Pepperbox Hill, pulled over set up the Portable in the boot wired it to the fag lighter and bingo The Big Match. By the time the game finished we had about 10 people watching with us (and some very bored Dogs expecting their walkies)

Got to the Guildhall square on the Bus station side and could not move and did not want to.

What a weekend and only two beers in the whole thing!

Absolutely marvellous day!! Will never forget. Stood in section D9 upper tier behind the goal where little Bobby placed the ball into the corner of the net. Wonderful moment. Still can remember the terracing actually bouncing up and down when we scored. Unbelievable moment. Needs to be repeated asap!!

That's brought back a few more memories. Ticket hidden inside sock due to the Mancs going to any length to get a ticket. They were a notorious bunch in those days. I think 70's Mike was at the bottom of our steps waiting to get in because I remember we got there so early the turnstiles were shut and we were all waiting on the steps to get in. A load of United fans kept charging up the steps and scattering men, women and children everywhere. Then a small group of Saints fans waded right through them giving it "SOUTHAMPTON", knocking the Mancs aside, and the atmosphere lifted and the noise really started and Saints fans suddenly woke up to the fact that we were there and were going to give it the best support ever. The journey home was magnificent - every bridge along the M3 crowded with people wearing red and white cheering and waving. I didn't go to the Civic reception on the Sunday - I was too drained but did go to Mick Channon's Testimonial on the Monday against QPR. What an atmosphere. There was a human touchline. I queued up for about 6 hours to get in. Great times - when winning the cup meant something.

Just dug out my Cup Final Ticket, Turnstile C14, and Programme.

Probably the best £2.50 I've ever spent .... yes £2.50.

The programme is a bit of a naff affair tbh, and weighs in at 20p.

To try and put it into perspective i think a pint of beer was about 30 - 40p a pint.

Don't have any Dell tickets - how much was it to get in there in 76?

I was at the game, my Dad went too although we were in different parts of the ground, he was sat down and I was in Block D9 stood up, in fact only game I missed on the Cup run was Villa replay, went by car to West Brom, Special Train to Bradford, coach to Semi Final and car to Final

My younger brother was watching on TV and jumped so high he hit the ceiling when we scored

Great day, although it was quite scarry as a 17yr old around Wembley with all the United fans after your tickets before the game and unhappy and looking to hit any Saitns fans after the game

Drive back down M3 after game was tremendous, with loads of people on Motorway bridges even up at Farnborough

Watching Bobby's goal even now still brings a tear to my eye

I can remember my first season ticket at the Dell cost me £32 and it was under the East Stand when they put in the bench seats, it must have been in the early to mid 70's.
