Best Opposition Player At SMS This Season?

Think it's safe to say it won't be a Stoke player so with the home fixtures done who for the opposition was impressed you most this season.

For me the standout player was Lakaku. Reminded me of Drogba.

don't know, our defence was so poor on Saturday that you just can't judge any opponent on that game. West Brom's 3 pronged attack was just too good for our defence though. As have been most serious multi-player attacks this season. It should be the first thing we address once the season has ended. Maybe it's been done already who knows but we just cannot afford to start next season with either Fox or Hooieveld in our side or even as first change players. Need a CB and a LB, a real one not a 17 year old kiddy.

Said the same. Not too many others stand out. Scholes and Van Persie, Bale maybe?

We press high up the pitch, essentially if you can get the ball forward to a significant number of players against us you will do ok as it takes time to readjust and get players back into position. The high pressing game is effective but taxing, and can leave you short if your not careful. This is usually made worse when the FB go forward aswell.

That said, Lukaku looked v v good.

In fact one of my biggest beefs with Fox is that he doesn't get forward enough and to be honest from what I saw on Saturday we were hoofing far too much, Jos and Fox in particular. Morgan was dropping far too deep to get the ball because if he didn't

Jos just hoofed it towards Lambert who had a bad day. We weren't pressing high with anywhere near the intensity we have in other matches of late. When Gaston came on it looked better because he added a bit of oomph (ok maybe a bit too much) and a bit of physical presqence. Personally I would like to see us go back to the Lallanaless side because for me he adds precisely zero to our pressing game.

Hazard scared the life out of me when he came on in the league game, if he had been on 5 mins earlier it would have gone a lot worse as he would have gotten past everyone one too many times and set someone up a treat.

Lukaku looked great, against a very bad day at the office for both our CB's (as Long looked decent beating them both for the 3rd).

Sandro was really good against us as well...

The above mentioned plus Tettey for Norwich. He did nothing spectacular but was like a wall in midfield. We couldn't get the ball past him without launching it over his head.

Tettey had a good day at SMS but other than that he's pretty average, don't think he's even a regular starter for Norwich now. Any player can play out of his skin once in a while but only true class brings consistency.

The clear quality of Bale, RVP, Scholes, Mata, and latterly Lukaku spring to mind....though i think those Man Utd players were let off a bit by too much respect, especially for Scholes...

Di Natale in pre-season for Udinese showed us what a lethal finisher is really like.

Demba Ba on his first game for Chelsea predictably ditto.

Incidentally, our poor preseason results and our poor start to the season: coincidence? Udinese are 6th in a weak Seria A this year and were behind us in physical preparation yet they dicked us 0-4 at a canter...

And yet Adkins went on and on about how fit we were whereas Pardew got sacked for trying to make the players supremely fit.

Good point. In some ways it was actually a very good bench mark for how the start of the season turned out...

To be fair, two of Udinese's goals were un-saveable (video below if anyone wants to see them)

But yeah, I was talking to my dad about this the other day. Lukaku was easily the best/most effective player I've seen at St Marys.

I also thought Santi Cazorla for Arsenal had some quality moments in a poor performance from them here. The ball seemed glued to his foot sometimes.

Lukaku showed tremendous pace to out run Clyne, but also had the power too. What a combination of facits!

I thought Fellaini was equally impressive. Tremendous ball control for a big man and great strength. Far better player than I had him down for. We handled him well, but he still caused us massive problems.

I think Hazard was the best player though. Amazing talent. Ran rings round us when he came on. My favourite player at the moment.

Lukaka

Fellaini

Maloney

Caulker and Gallas were both excellent

RVP (tho can't recall him doing much other than scoring 3 times!)

Collins played well for West Ham

O'Shea

Junior Hoillet ... is he a realistic target?

Thinking back there haven't been that many stand-out individual performances against us.

Agreed, probably the best 'individual' performance I've seen this season, he was the difference between the teams on the day and we would have won that game without his performance for them.

Lukaku didn't do much that impressed me to be honest. Went around the keeper well, but we didn't ask him to do anything difficult to get through us.

In terms of game changing performances you'd have to go some to beat Paul Scholes' 15 minutes.

Hazard also operated in orbit of Lampard for an impressive 20 minute spell.

Not buying the van Persie stuff, he's a great player but we gifted Man U their goals and he didn't have to do much either.

Scholes was immense when he came on against us. I would say he changed the game but Adkins did that with his substitutions!

No, Ferguson did that with his substitution. What Adkins did was bring on our best 3 subs in their best positions to try and sure up 10 exhausted outfielders who were already knackered and falling apart.

in no way were all 3 exhausted.

All 10 outfielders were at various stages of knackered, and the 7 outfielders left on there proved the point nicely. I posted a lengthy message on here about that 15 minutes of capitulation, detailing every single pass and the repeated turnovers. We gave the ball away over and over again and made some utterly dismal choices all over the pitch which all clearly pointed to fatigue (the most obvious of which was to hoof the ball at Mayuka endlessly to little success instead of trying to play it through midfield).
