Saint Charlie Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Their great result today doesnt IMO make Wigan any more or less likely to beat Arsenal. They could win, they did it last year afterall.
Dalek2003 Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 They are 10/1 - sounds about right (their chances are about 9%) Would you like to comment on whether Saints still need 41-43 points to be safe? How many times ? I have made it clear that if we only get 39 points we will be relegated and that if we get 41 we will be safe. 40 may just be enough. People lambast me for outlandish predictions. I am sure many of you would have considered a Wigan win against City as outlandish and look what happened. Moreover, Wigan played very well ! A wise man never takes anything in football for granted.
Colinjb Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Delighted for Wigan. I bet their fans would take a day like this over Premier League nothing anyday. We are safe.
SaintBobby Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Their great result today doesnt IMO make Wigan any more or less likely to beat Arsenal. They could win, they did it last year afterall. They've drifted just a little to about 2/7, but I agree this is unlikely to impact too much on the league.

I am sure many of you would have considered a Wigan win against City as outlandish and look what happened. Moreover, Wigan played very well ! A wise man never takes anything in football for granted. Initially it was 41-43. Then it was 41. You now think 40 may "just be enough" (you therefore think we might lose one of our remaining games 12-0, as that's the only way that 40 won't mathematically be enough). With this extraordinary level of backsliding week-by-week, you may even have settled on an accurate figure by the end of the season.
Dalek2003 Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Yet again you are overlooking it isn't just Wigan that would need to overtake Saints. Fair enough. Again, I will keep it simple. If we stay on 39 points we will be relegated. I have been consistent in my view for many weeks now. There will be twists and turns in the last two games ad we are far from safe.
Batman Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Fair enough. Again, I will keep it simple. If we stay on 39 points we will be relegated. I have been consistent in my view for many weeks now. There will be twists and turns in the last two games ad we are far from safe. Please stop it

With this extraordinary level of backsliding week-by-week, you may even have settled on an accurate figure by the end of the season. Yes, way back I said 41 to 43 for certain safety. I have always said 39 points would see us relegated.
Katalinic Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Fair enough. Again, I will keep it simple. If we stay on 39 points we will be relegated. I have been consistent in my view for many weeks now. There will be twists and turns in the last two games ad we are far from safe. You've been consistent in most of your views over the past few years - all of which have turned out to be b***ocks.

There will be twists and turns in the last two games ad we are far from safe. You said 43 points, then 41 points now you are saying 39 points. When it is shown 39 points is actually enough to keep a team with Saints goal difference safe will you backtrack even further to 39 points? Last season you said we'd finish 17th in the Championship! We were in the top 2 for the entire season! ffs
Cabrone Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Don't worry, Arsenal will beat Wigan won't they...................? Let's just beat Sunderland and put this uncertainty to bed for good, it's been hanging around like a bad smell for too long now.
Saints foreva Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Delighted for Wigan. I bet their fans would take a day like this over Premier League nothing anyday. We are safe. As would most fans imo. Fair play to Wigan, fully deserved.
Colinjb Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Don't worry, Arsenal will beat Wigan won't they...................? Amazing that this is the same team who were a defensive clusterf**k against Swansea.
Dalek2003 Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 As would most fans imo. Fair play to Wigan, fully deserved. Yes, the spirit is there. As I have said I CAN see Wigan beating Arsenal and I CAN see them getting 6 points form their last two games.
SaintBobby Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Yes, way back I said 41 to 43 for certain safety. I have always said 39 points would see us relegated. Like I say, backsliding like crazy. I've always said 39 will be enough. You've slid from 41-43 to 41 and now to 40 (I assume you're accepting 40 is enough - forecasting a 12-0 defeat would be very odd). By Tuesday, you may well be accepting it's 38-39. So at least you're backsliding in the right direction, I guess.
Dalek2003 Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Don't worry, Arsenal will beat Wigan won't they...................? Let's just beat Sunderland and put this uncertainty to bed for good, it's been hanging around like a bad smell for too long now. Agree with this. It is always a hopeless and unrewarding feeling to rely on other results. We should have wrapped things up at West Ham or agiants the Baggies.
WATERSIDEIFASAINT Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Wigan are far more likely to lose at Arsenal after winning the cup today imo. From such a massive cup shock and the players being on a high and the fact Arsenal are going to be a lot fresher it is written all over this match a Wigan defeat ie from such a high to a real low for the players. Arsenal have a lot more pace to worry Wigan's defence and need to win this game as Newcastle away wont be easy for them so they will want to win their last home game. I would be totally amazed and put it about 3 times the shock value of today if Wigam were to win at the Emirates because even an unlikely draw keeps us up and thats assuming we don't get something tomorrow and I think we will at least pick up a point tomorrow
Dalek2003 Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Like I say, backsliding like crazy. I've always said 39 will be enough. Matthew Le God Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Out of interest Mr Dalek2003.... Should the extremely unlikely happen and 4th place Arsenal beat 18th place Wigan at home on Tuesday and it is shown that 39 points is enough. What will you say or will we never hear from you on the subject again like with your 17th place Championship predictions of 2011/12?

SaintBobby Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Yes, the spirit is there. As I have said I CAN see Wigan beating Arsenal and I CAN see them getting 6 points form their last two games. You're not just saying that Wigan CAN beat Arsenal (everyone agrees it's possible). You are saying they definitely WILL beat Arsenal. That's the only feasible way that 39 points won't be enough for Saints to stay up. And you claim to be utterly certain that 39 points won't be enough. Football is, of course, unpredictable. So, to be utterly certain that Wigan will beat Arsenal away on Tuesday night is a bit weird.
Colinjb Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Dave Whelan: "We are looking for 4 points, 4 or 6 points" Short of an amazing goal swing, 4 will see them below us on goal difference. We are safe.
Dalek2003 Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Yes, I am saying that I think Wigan will beat Arsenal. I ahve made that clear. It is my opinion. Are people allowed to think differently or do you find it offensive ? We do not live in a controlled state like North Korea.
Lighthouse Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Christ MLG you really don't get it do you. He will keep on posting endless sh*te because that's what he does. He doesn't care if it's wrong he will just come up with some other nonsense to peddle for the whole season. He is just some sad, sad little man sat behind a keyboard, probably laughing his tits off because saps like you are still obsessing over his 17th prediction from over a year ago. As for being safe... it would take something monumental for Wigan to raise their game to that standard again at Arsenal. Never say never but you always have a cup final hangover, even if you don't get drunk. A point for both sides will probably keep both teams up. I can see us playing out a very flat and convenient draw. Hopefully not, it's a very long drive for a 0-0.

Yes football is unpredictable, I am certain that Wigan will beat Arsenal, but that does not mean I won't be proven wrong. You are certain Wigan will fail to get 3 points from Arsenal, but you could be proven wrong.
Matthew Le God Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Yes, I am saying that I think Wigan will beat Arsenal. I ahve made that clear. It is my opinion. Are people allowed to think differently or do you find it offensive ? We do not live in a controlled state like North Korea. Even if they did beat Arsenal, that still doesn't mean 39 points wouldn't be enough. Given you can get odds of 10/1 on a Wigan win on Tuesday I'm assuming as you are so convinced they will win you must have put a large bet on this match given your likely huge returns. Haven't you...? If not, why not?
Dalek2003 Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Dave Whelan: "We are looking for 4 points, 4 or 6 points" Short of an amazing goal swing, 4 will see them below us on goal difference. We are safe. Some posters will consider him off his head. I am sure the Wigan players mean to get 6 points and from what I have seen in the Cup Final, they have every chance of doing it. If we stay on 39 points I am certain we will go down.
Matthew Le God Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Yes football is unpredictable, I am certain that Wigan will beat Arsenal, but that does not mean I won't be proven wrong. You are certain Wigan will fail to get 3 points from Arsenal, but you could be proven wrong. SaintBobby didn't say he was certain that Arsenal would win. But the vast majority of people looking at that game would come to the conclusion Arsenal are the overriding favourites. A Wigan win although possible (as they showed last season), it is very unlikely. Yet you claim "if we stay on 39 points I am certain we will go down", so by saying that you are saying you are certain Wigan will beat Arsenal.
Colinjb Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Some posters will consider him off his head. Super_Saint Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 If we stay on 39 points we will be relegated. I have been consistent in my view for many weeks now. There will be twists and turns in the last two games ad we are far from safe. If we stay on 39 points we MIGHT be relegated. I'm sure you will agree there are no certainties in football. It is POSSIBLE that one of Wigan/Norwich/Newcastle will lose their next game. If Wigan draw/lose we are virtually safe. If Norwich lose they have to beat City (away) on the last day. If Newcastle lose they have to beat Arsenal on the last day. None of these teams are certain to gain any points from the final two games. If you think it's a possibility for us to lose both games, then surely it's understandable that Wigan are not certain to win against Arsenal like you claim.
SaintBobby Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 (edited) Yes football is unpredictable, I am certain that Wigan will beat Arsenal, but that does not mean I won't be proven wrong. You are certain Wigan will fail to get 3 points from Arsenal, but you could be proven wrong. LMAO. I'm not certain that Wigan will fail to beat Arsenal. I just think it's pretty likely. Even if they do destroy Arsenal's Champions League hopes, which is a hell of a longshot, it's still likely that 39 points will be enough. 40 points is now definitely enough (barring a last day result which is less likely than Armageddon occurring between now and the end of the season) It's still pretty likely that 38 points or even less will have turned out to be enough for Saints (certainly more likely that 38 will be enough than that 40 will be required). For example, if Wigan win one and lose one of their last two games (or do worse than that), then 38 points (or less) will be enough. To be utterly certain, that Wigan will do better than 3 points from 2 games is simply a sign of idiocy, innumeracy and/or mental illness. Edited 11 May, 2013 by SaintBobby

Matthew Le God Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 My view is crystal clear and consistent as it usually is on most matters. Like when you predicted Saints finishing 17th in the Championship, when they actually stayed in the top 2 all season and were automatically promoted?
Dalek2003 Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Like when you predicted Saints finishing 17th in the Championship, when they actually stayed in the top 2 all season and were automatically promoted? Yes, I got that one wrong.
S-Clarke Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Odd, Wigan win an FA Cup which has no bearing on the league, and all of a sudden this thread comes a live with the usual nutter. Fair play to Wigan, but Man City were atrocious, that was unacceptable from 1 to 11 from them. That was probably an even worse showing than when they played us, and that's saying something! Cracking day for Wigan and a seriously deserved win, but complacency and lethargy reigned king in the Man City side today.
SaintBobby Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Now you are sounding much more controlled in your response. I am happy to leave it at that. My view is crystal clear and consistent as it usually is on most matters. You accept that 40 points is definitely enough now? If so, you haven't been at all consistent. You've already been inconsistent, of course, switching from 41-43 needed to 40-41. Which is neither clear or consistent.

I am sure that what went wrong when we played the Baggies, hopefully the lesson will have been learnt by players and manager.
Crab Lungs Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 It's not that much of a surprise when you consider how bad a manager Mancini is. He's awful. Wigan are a team and whilst they haven't spunked £500m on players (many of whom are utterly turd or average at best), team ethic and organisation does count for a lot. This, however, will be a completely different kettle of skates to the Arsenal game though. They'll go there and have a go, but I think you'll see Arsenal rip 'em a new one. The scoreline might only be 2-0, or 2-1, but they'll dominate completely.

In the direction of reality, I concede. But nevertheless, a long way away from being clear and consistent.

dubai_phil Posted 11 May, 2013 Posted 11 May, 2013 Well, whoever leaked the story that Pelligrini will be replacing Mancini in the Press today must have been a Wigan fan. No wonder Citeh looked down. Wigan? Yep they actually could use the bounce and win BOTH their remaining games, but the truth is that Norwich & Newcastle are also on horrid runs and it's as possible neither of them will get another point as it is that Wigan will beat the Gooners. Certainly my Son in Law hopes Wigan do the business being a Spud
