Are We Safe?

Or when drunk.

Disappointingly given the circumstances, I'd only had 2 pints all day - possibly the only time since I've left that I wished I was going back to Newport for the night.

This makes no sense - there is no such thing as 'nailed on wins' or even 'points' for Saints but there are for the teams around us.

Pray tell me what the difference is between these teams starting elevens and ours?

These posts remind me of last year, and even the year before. West Ham were made out to be this unbeatable winning machine and they would overhaul us for sure, but we pipped them to it and were better than them over the course of the year.

Same with Huddersfield and P'boro in L1, it was absoloutley nailed on that they would keep winning and we would lose lots of games. But it didn't happen, we held our nerve against a Huddersfield onslaught - it has to be said, but that run-in took nerves of steel from our players. I think the last 2 seasons and the pressure we've had to endure is a benefit to us this year, I don't think we've got players who hide away in the background - that's why I'm not worried, as I think they'll all come to the forefront when they need to and they'll prove who is best at the end of the day.

I think they're a little guilty of complacency in the WBA game, and they probably know it deep down. The Spurs performance was much better and no one hid away, we took a top 4 team and gave them a real game on Saturday. I take positives from that display, as many people were predicting a complete mauling, but actually they didn't deserve to win it. We needed a response to show that we're still alive and aware of the situation, and we got it in my opinion.

If we go down you have to question...

Pochettino

Cortese

Corteses signings

Corteses lack of relevant signings

Reed

And if we stay up you have to credit...

Pochettino

Adkins

Cortese

The club's wealth of relevant signings

Reed

(but many won't and will continue to be negative)

I love this time of year on the forum. Alpine really comes into his own, like clockwork predicting doom every single time.

If we go down I'll have to question the usefulness of probability statistics, and that's about it.

If the Doomsday Scenario of relegation comes to pass, it won't be a walk in the park back up to the Prem next season either. Would Pochettino stay? Would he be any good in the Championship anyway? He wants to eventually join the elite mangers' group of Pep, Jose, Alex et al, so cannot see him wanting to slum it in the second division for long. His reputation would take a hammering from relegation though, inhibiting his options.

So maybe the clappers will admit we never needed our luxury signing of Ramirez and a better rounded premiership class player for £12million?

Or Forren?

Or Mayuka?

Theres £19 million wasted there straight away.

If we end up selling them at a loss without them having performed well over a period of time, I will admit they were poor signings. For now, I will only recognize that they haven't lived up to expectations this season.

I have come to the conclusion that there are some very odd people on this Board who seem to revel and take comfort in their own team's (and by proxy therefore their own) misfortune to the point where they are only truly happy when things are going wrong. I will see if I can find anything on Google for this disturbed state of mind and any therapy which may assist.

Possibly not living in a **** boring country on the continent may help certain of the protagonists for starters.

It's a natural reaction to be worried right now, I am for the first time in weeks. A Swansea win would put a stop to that. After beating Liverpool and Chelsea many people thought we were going to continue that good run of form but it never happened, it never was going to, it wasn't realistic. Yet now we have lost 2 games in a row it's suddenly nailed on that this run of defeats will continue. I'm predicting that run won't realistically continue, it might only be a point or two, but it will be enough

We are not safe yet. (and I haven´t followed this thread so perhaps someone already taken this angle before me)

Which team would you wanna swap position with at the moment of the teams from 40 points and down?

Fulham.

Have Liverpool home and Swansea away. Tough games but can see them pick up a draw at Swansea but might be a nervous game depending of results this weekend.

A maybe for me about a swap.

Aston Villa

Chelsea home, Wigan away. They are in form but if they dont pick up anything against Chelsea their final game can be very very nervy. Wouldn´t wanna play that kind of game away and to crazy Wigan.

A small maybe but think not even though they are in good form now.

Sunderland

Saints at home, Tottenham away. This weekend is their best choice since we are quite goal shy at the moment but meeting us you never know what you´re up against. When we have our good days we are very tough to beat. And with 3 best goalscorers out of the team....

A no for me.

Norwich

West Brom at home, Man C away. Their best chance is this weekend but West Brom is also a team that can be brilliant or quite poor, what will they be this weekend....?

Cant see them getting anything at Man C. Last game, home and hopefully good weather is always a good inspiration for the home team.

A no for me.

Newcastle

QPR away, Arsenal at home. Obviously best chance at the weekend against QPR but can be tricky to play a team in their final home game and they might even want to show some pride to their fans....(yeah yeah I know, pride and QPR players......). Arsenal at home they historically can pik up points against but cant count on that and Arsenal is probably in a dogfight for CL spot.

A weak yes but very weak.

Wigan.

Swansea at home, Arsenal away, Aston Villa at home. Yes they are in decent form and has shown they can score a lot of goals but still they need to pick up points and that´s easier said than done. Much is on tonight of course, if they dont win they will be in a tough spot and with a draw tonight, lose at Arsenal and win against Aston Villa put them on 39, I only see Norwich as the team they can pass then....

So for me, I wouldn´t make a swap but we need to perform like we did at Spurs, then I´m confident we stay up and maybe might finish 13-14th....

If nothing else, at least this thread puts paid to all of the "we love the Football League" stuff that was being bandied about last year. ;)

Does it?

I hope we stay up, but if we do go down the pros of Championship football would outweigh much of the disappointment of relegation for me. We've been really impressive to watch at times this season, but I can't say I've thoroughly enjoyed going to games much more than last year. Making up the numbers in the Premier League or competing in the Championship? Not much in it for me.

Sorry but you are wrong.

One thing you can say for "CERTAIN" is 39 MAY be enough.

It is far from a fact to say that 39 would see us relegated.

39 could, and I think probably will, be enough.

These results have us finishing in 15th...(39 points!)

Sunderland 4 - 0 Saints

Saints 0 - 4 Stoke

Wigan 0 - 0 Swansea

Arsenal 1 - 0 Wigan

Wigan 4 - 0 Villa

Norwich 0 - 0 WBA

Man C 1 - 0 Norwich

QPR 0 - 0 Newcastle

Newcastle 0 - 1 Arsenal

That will be enough if any of these teams' results happen, not all, just one!

I think at least one, if not more than one of Wigan, Newcastle or Norwich will fail to better those results meaning two 4-0 defeats would be plenty.

Safe before last game??

If we lose to Sunderland we are still safe before last game if Wigan don't get at least two points from Swansea and arsenal. (If Wigan lose home to Swansea can't see them staying up whatever happens in any other game this season)

If we draw with Sunderland we are safe before Stoke game if Wigan don't beat one out of Arsenal and Swansea.

Relax, if we get just one point from last two games (which would mean the last 6 games was worst period in whole season)

For us to go down we would need BOTH of Wigan and Aston Villa to take points in their games against Chelsea and Arsenal. One of them getting great result would still mean 1 point enough.

Reckon Fulham more likely to go down than us :)

I was too pessimistic ;)

39 is safe.

Lose to Sunderland and still very good chance we go into last weekend mathematically safe (my season long prediction)

Serves them right.

At least Dalek and Alpine might now STFU.

To be fair I'm sure they are just as relieved as the rest of us.

To summarise:

If we win on Sunday we stay up

If we draw and Villa lose v Chelsea we stay up

If we lose and Wigan fail to beat Arsenal we stay up

If none of the above then it all goes down to the final Sunday.

surly wigan have to win both games?

No. They could draw with Arsenal and then beat Villa 13-0. Of course, if we lose our next two games 6-0, they'd only need a 1-0 win over Villa. Bloody hell. Alpine's right.

Haha they were bad when we were going down with them.

Now they are bad because we look likely to stay up with them.?

Notice you haven't been on Jay "wouldn't be half what we paid for him" Rods case as much recently?

Wrong again were ya mate?

The battle for 4th place is very significant in all of this. If Spurs don't pick up points at Chelsea tomorrow or against Stoke on Sunday then Arsenal are guaranteed 4th which means they can play the reserves against Wigan - A game I can see Wigan winning. We need Spurs to stay in the chase so that Arsenal go into their game against Wigan needing 3 points to secure 4th place.

Now time for some perspective!

For those who continued to believe all other teams could win and we will lose all our matches I list the last 6 matches for the following bottom teams bar Reading and QPR

1) Villa W3D1L2 pts 10

2) Saints W2D2L2 pts 8

3) Wigan W2D2L2 pts 8

4) Sunderland W2D1L3 pts 7

5) Westham W1D4L1 pts 7

6) Stoke W2D1L3 pts 7

7) Swansea W1D3L2 pts 6

8) New C W1D2L3 pts 5

9) Norwich W1D1L4 pts 4

10) Fulham W0D1L5 pts 1

As we can see the average pts per game is barely more than 1.25 a game and there are always at least 2 or 3 teams with less than 1pt a game in this case Fulham, Newcastle and Norwich

I also note Saints have done as well as anyone in the bottom half over the last 6 games apart from Villa

That is why we were always safe on 39 ands all these theories that everyone will win whilst we lose, or that all bottom teams would average 2 to 3 points a game, are nothing but myths

Only Villa gained any points over us over the last 6 games, and then only 2!

This shows just how difficult it is to make up a 6 point difference over 6 games, when there are many teams below us, and this is why probabilities and bookies are inevitably right and we were always safe on 39 points what ever the wrist slitters said!

Wigan are gone now. Good riddance is all I can say.

Not so sure. I think it's quite feasible that one or more of Newcastle and Norwich will lose their last two games meaning one Wigan win would probably keep them up, as long as they don't get hammered in their other match.

I can see a Wigan win against Villa sending one of the Ns down.
