Are We Safe?

Exactly, it's a freak season. You get the impression some people don't even look at the league table before posting.

with a bit of luck Swansea will beat or hold to a draw Wigan tomorrow evening and then it will all be over bar the fat lady cos the Arse will crap on Wigan so to speak. Any game against Arsenal,Chelsea or Spurs is virtually lost in advance until they decide the 3rd 4th and 5th places.

I don't think he can have seen any of the matches tbh - just goes on speculation and guesswork.

No goals in 3 games indicates either a significant drop in performance or we have been sussed out. Both are extremely worrying going into the last 2 games.

Or that we had a perfectly good goal disallowed at Swansea while getting a draw against one of the better teams in the EPL, and that we outplayed a team going for a CL spot only to be mugged by the brilliance of one player at the end. In fact the only bad performance in the last 8 matches was the home match against WBA. If you had been watching, you would know that your simplistic take on matters has little basis in truth.

OK let's stick with the truth

We have scored ONE goal in the last four matches

2 points out of twelve

Lost 2

Drawn 2

Still, no need to worry, question or discuss the situation until 17.45 on the 19th May ... we can suggest ways of putting things right then

No need to actually criticise any body now is there ?

Oh the irony!

I suggest you get to grips with the entire thread before commenting out of context.

Presumably you are in the "serious drop in performance" camp or the "teams have sussed us out" camp?

So who do we want to win tonight? Stoke win, this leave Sunderland licking there wounds, with one home game to try and get out of it. Or Sunderland win, and go into the game against us pretty much safe?

I think Sunderland will win!

Not a freak season, but a very average premier league with a lot of poor teams.

not enough top class strikers to go round that's why. Man U, Citeh and even Arsenal have more than their fair share but they still want everybody else's. Ridiculous for one team to have Chicharito,Van Persie, Welbeck and Rooney and Norwich to have just Grant Holt.

Well, the trick is to wait until FT then mentally spin the result to suit whatever you'd prefer to be true.

That said, I think a Stoke win has the most plus points. They would have nothing to play for on the last day and it would keep another team between us and the bottom three. Couple that with the fact that even if Sunderland win it would still not alter their attitude against us.

.....Stoke win please

I'm not in any "camp"

I simply look at the League table, see Saints having a run of poor results which COULD lead to relegation

What is wrong with that synopsis ?? Doesn't make me anti Saints

(FWIW I have been a ST holder for many many years. I've been through many many ups and downs )

Well that is all very interesting, but I fail to see what any of it has to do with the post to which you responded. If you are not in either camp then why did you pass comment? So I again suggest you get things in context before piping up.

To be polite, and to address the things you have said above:

Yes the last "two" results have been disappointing (although only one of the performances was).

Yes it could lead to relegation.

There is nothing wrong with that synopsis (did I say there was?)

Does it make you anti-Saints? Nope - never said it did.

And we'll done regarding the ST. Join the club. Completely irrelevant nonetheless.

I'm a little more confident we'll be OK after the Spurs defeat - ironically. MP managed to raised our players and our game, which was concerning me.

If we put in two more performances like that we'll pick up at least a point and safety IMHO. But we can't relax yet. If we go down, it will be down to the manager taking his eye off the ball too early - Swansea and West Brom games were toothless performances.

If we do go down - we wont want MP as manager in the CCC.

Two VERY important games coming up. Lets hope MP can raise their game again... and again.

I remain totally convinced, and have been for weeks, that 39 points will not be enough for safety this year

The Sunderland game is now crucial. If we can win we can relax at SMS on the last day of the season ... Lose and we may well be heading for a trap door

Why are you "totally convinced"?

Are you 100% certain that Wigan will get 5 points from 3 games AND Norwich will get 2 points from 2 games AND Newcastle will get 2 points from 2 games.

To be "totally convinced" of this strikes me as a bit mad tbh.

I'd like to place a bet with you if I may, presumably you'd offer 10,000/1 that 39 isn't enough?

Looks to me now that 39 points (and a very good GD) is about a 60-40 bet on staying up.

40 points (and a very good GD) is about 99.9%.

I'm struggling to find any way at all that Saints need 41 points or more.

This will shift a lot depending on the Wigan v Swansea game. If Wigan lose, 39 points is surely safe. If Wigan draw, 39 points is near-as-damnit safe. (in both cases, they'd need to avoid defeat at Arsenal on the 14th to catch us). If Wigan win, you're perhaps looking at 40 or maybe - in some utterly mad scenario - 41 (but even then, there's be a reasonable-ish chance of staying up on 39)

If Wigan beat Swansea but lose to Arsenal and Villa lose to Chelsea. Both teams will have 38 points for final game. They play each other in the final game. So the best both teams can do is 39 points. Our superior goal difference will keep us up (just) if we don't win another point.

Are you absolutely sure about that?

Have a look at the league table now.

Villa already have 40, no??? So, using the scenario above, Wigan could get 41 and Villa would remain on 40. We would be relegated on 39. Villa need to beat Wigan.

And this is why Saturday's results were such a bummer. If Villa had only drawn that last game scenario with Villa playing Wigan would have come in to play, not so now.

Sometimes in football you dont need to be rational. I think Wigan will beat Swansea. I think Arsenal will beat them & then they will beat Villa.

We need to at least draw with Sunderland or I think we might go down. All that ******** about Champions League...............

Have had a really bad feeling since WBA as we were so bad. Didnt go on Saturday, but hear we were a lot better. Simply put a win at the Mackems makes us safe IMHO.

That said I am worried, very worried we will go down.

Sorry

Well, we're not safe, which is a tad annoying at this stage of the season.

If we can't secure our safety in the next two games, probably don't deserve to be in this division. The league doesn't lie, as they say. Before anyone tells me unlucky we were on Saturday, we've been lucky at other points in the season. It all evens out. Priority one is survival on our own terms, imo.

Not scoring for three games can indicate many, many other things other than the mere two that you have suggested. Stop trying to be a pundit and join the rest of us in the real world.

If we go down this time it will be a much bigger disgrace than 2005, imo.

We were fighting against sh*te managment that entire season, and were never far away from bottom.

We've been up to 11th this season, and not so long ago. Though the January window now looks like it was a disaster for us, we did nothing to strengthen the team, now it is clear Forren has no part to play.

To prove your point Newcastle significantly strengthened in January and they've accelerated away from the relegation zone.

Oh.

We are 2 points away from 11th, 4 points away from 18th.

It doesn't matter how many times you repeat it, we are still in a relegation battle and your banging on about how great it is for us if teams below us beat teams above us is looking very naive and foolish.
