Lighthouse Posted 27 April, 2013 Posted 27 April, 2013 Ridiculous challenge from Fox, just seen it again on MOTD. WTF was going through his head when he went leaping into that. Hooiveld for the third goal looked like an oil tanker trying to U-turn through treacle.
The Kraken Posted 27 April, 2013 Posted 27 April, 2013 Ridiculous challenge from Fox, just seen it again on MOTD. WTF was going through his head when he went leaping into that. I was the other side of it at the ground and didn't see the extent of it at the time. Utterly ludicrous challenge, no excuse whatsoever. Summed up an abysmal day for Fox, the useless pr*ck. Hooiveld for the third goal looked like an oil tanker trying to U-turn through treacle. Not to mention getting undone for Lukaku's misses in the first half. Anyone who suggests Hooiveld is anywhere near Premier League material needs their head seeing to; he's a very poor defender at this level. That was like watching our eaarly season games. Yoshida also looked a pale imitation of a footballer, to be fair.
Crazy Diamond Posted 27 April, 2013 Posted 27 April, 2013 Ridiculous challenge from Fox, just seen it again on MOTD. WTF was going through his head when he went leaping into that. Hooiveld for the third goal looked like an oil tanker trying to U-turn through treacle. I'm amazed people needed to see it twice - he wasn't going to get the ball, he was late, he had both feet off the ground. An exceptionally sh*te referee would have still given a red for it. Hooiveld is unbelievably slow, there can be no doubt about it.
Saint Charlie Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Hooiveld for the first goal actually ran away from Lukaku...
david in sweden Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Difficult to defend Fox on any account. His recent run of games showed that he wasn't quite the liability we saw in early season - except it took NA about 8 games to see that - and one or two early challenges calmed my nerves a little, but sadly his performance deteriorated at a rate of knots, resulting in the inevitable red card. If Pochettino was in any doubt about Fox's " future potential " that must have been made obvious after 70 mins. yesterday. His three game ban will see out the rest of the season and it may well have been his last game for SFC. Hooiveld really does blow hot and cold, in some games he's looked really commanding.in others he resembles a slow-moving tank. His previous 6 game sojourn with Yoshida conceded only 3 goals, who IMHO has been most consistant of the three, but yesterday there was little to compliment anyone on. Many fans admire Fonte's skill on the ground, but he is also painfully slow on the turn and has been at fault on many occasions this season when coming up against a fast-moving striker.
stknowle Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Seem to remember Hooiveld having very good games against Liverpool and Man City, but never mind that as it doesn't suit the agenda of this thread. I agree Fox is clearly not good enough at this level, and whilst Jos had a bad game today he has proved on other occasions this season that he is good enough for this league, and he is what you call 'adequate' cover. Cover is exactly what he should be though, if we do want to push on. Agree with this. Next season Fox out, Jos 4th or 5th choice depending on whether we buy 1 or 2 new c.b's
Legod Third Coming Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 If we truly want to push on to the next level then we need to address the defensive situation in the summer - none of our centre backs are top class and beyond Shaw and Clyne we lack any sort of cover. Yep, we need Centre Backs with more pace. We were undone by easy balls over the top. Jos was turning like a fecking oil tanker and Yoshi was just too close, trying to step in and being easily beaten off it. Hopeless. That said, we were shocking all over yesterday.
SFKA South Woodford Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Apparently one of those 'Steward told me' rumours was going around yesterday that Shaw has signed for Man Utd instead of us and all we get is compensation from the adjudication panel. Have to agree with the OP and as much as I liked and admired Jos last season, this season he has been a nightmare, he's so slow and his centre of balance seems totally off and don't get me started on his long punts forward. Also heard a rumour that Fox has had a Saints crest tattoed on his chest, so now we know why Cortese want to change the crest. He obviously doesn't want the club associated with that garbage going forward. We laud the team when they have played well, so it would be nice if the players shouldered their responsibility and issued an apology for that performance, it was dire and an abject failure of the kind not seen since that day at Fratton seven years ago.
Crab Lungs Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Apparently one of those 'Steward told me' rumours was going around yesterday that Shaw has signed for Man Utd instead of us and all we get is compensation from the adjudication panel. Bloody hell, I hope not.

melmacian_saint Posted 28 April, 2013 Author Posted 28 April, 2013 That can't happen. He signed a new contract with us, hence if he was to sign for United we would have to get a fee like in a normal transfer. Just like our previous academy starlets.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Are people saying this is why Shaw's out? Doesn't really make sense . Utd sign Wilfred Zaha and then let him stay at Palace, but agree to sign Shaw but don't let him play for Saints?
melmacian_saint Posted 28 April, 2013 Author Posted 28 April, 2013 Many fans admire Fonte's skill on the ground, but he is also painfully slow on the turn and has been at fault on many occasions this season when coming up against a fast-moving striker. Tell me one! He dealt with Cissé wonderfully for a start... And let's talk about Hooiveld against 80% of strikers shall we?? It is also a myth that Hooiveld played well v. City or Liverpool. Liverpool he left injured after almost letting Suarez in. City barely turned up and in that sense then Yoshida-Fonte had a magnificent game v. Arsenal.

Utd sign Wilfred Zaha and then let him stay at Palace, but agree to sign Shaw but don't let him play for Saints? doesn't make any sense probably because there's no sense to be made but Under 18 players have an ambiguos contract situation, because they're not on full professional contracts.
Chez Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Jos was poor yesterday, but he has been good in other games.
melmacian_saint Posted 28 April, 2013 Author Posted 28 April, 2013 I think the problem is Fox brings out the worst in Hooiveld And another myth. STOP burying your head in the sand for Jos FFS. He is not good enough. What is it about Jos really? He is no club legend, just another journeyman defender.
Saint Charlie Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Jos was poor yesterday, but he has been good in other games. Pretty much every game he allows a clear scoring chance for the opposition. He isnt good enough at this level.
DT Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 I don't buy these Shaw injuries and viruses and fear he is off. Wouldn't be surprised if he's off to Chelsea on condition he doesn't play any more games for us.

Just a bit injury prone as likely as not, he'll get over it.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's off to Chelsea on condition he doesn't play any more games for us. Why would we agree to a deal like that? You really think Cortese will be bullied by another club into being told he can't play one of his best players for the last half dozen games of the season? Shaw may well be sold in the summer but it has bugger all to do with these recent injuries. If anything I think we've had to rely on him a bit too much and he's picked up a few niggling injuries, same as Burley did with Bale.
Saint Charlie Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Schneiderlin said in his interview this week that Shaw was one of the players who committed his future to the club.
DT Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Was he not seen with his foot in a walking cast yesterday ? Just a bit injury prone as likely as not, he'll get over it. Ah. I didn't know that. I just see Focx on the team sheet and know that opposition managers build their match day tactics around exploiting the fact that he is abysmal.
BadgerBadger Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 The fact that most teams send all attacks down their right when Fox plays speaks volumes, he can't shoot, tackle, cross or run fast
VectisSaint Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Where is Shaw? Sold? Picked up an injury in Nandos, sorry meant in training...
SaintBobby Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 I'm going to stick up a bit for both Jos and Fox (a bit) Both had poor games yesterday for sure and I wouldn't want either in my starting XI as a rule. But, I'd still count them just about as "adequate "cover". My definition of "cover" though isn't being in the team ahead of Fonte, Forren and Shaw. My definition of "cover" (at least for defenders) is that we'd ideally hope never to use you in the first team, but we might just need to throw you in for a few minutes here or a few minutes there. In absolute extremis, because of injuries or suspensions, you might even have to start a very small handful of games - but we'd look to move to the loan market or sign a new player or rush anotehr player back from the treatment room as soon as we possibly could. So, to my mind, Seaborne is "cover" this season. Hoovield is actually one of our first choice centre backs FFS. And Fox doesn't seem to be "cover" for Shaw, he seems to be an alternative to Shaw. I'd be happy for Hoovield to be our 5th or 6th choice centre back next season (similar to Seaborne this season) - definitely not in our top three or even four. I'd be happy for Fox to be our 3rd choice left back behind Shaw and A.N. Other (similar to Richardson role this season). That to my mind is what is meant by "cover" - not actually being part of the starting XI on a pretty regular basis.
RedArmy Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 Fox is better suited to LM, but we have better options. I thought he put a few good crosses in (among some horrendous ones) that WBA defended well. Why Fonte isn't starting over Jos I'll never understand.
Chez Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 (edited) Pretty much every game he allows a clear scoring chance for the opposition. you can say the same of Yoshida. Players make mistakes. Forum posters, myself included often choose to highlight the ones from the players they don't rate. Clyne has made quite a few but because he is highly regarded these are not mentioned. Yiou have to question his marking for their second goal yesterday. You also have to question huis defending against Lukaka when Morgan saved us too. I've not seen anyone mention either. I don't think Jos is world beater, I have just always said he would do Ok if called upon and IMO by and large he has. You don't agree. We move on. What do you think of Yoshida? Window Cleaner Posted 28 April, 2013 Posted 28 April, 2013 why do you think that? He lacks pace, has no skills. doesn't get up and down, might even be described as lazy... Indeed, one of the things you most notice when Fox replaces Shaw is that we have nothing on the left side, JRod has to do it all himself with the help of the DMs.

I think Yoshida has had a much better season than either of our other CBs and is a good player. Makes better decisions, is more mobile and less clumsy.

Makes better decisions, is more mobile and less clumsy. He's had good and bad games. His decision to dive in yesterday led directly to the third goal. He might be more mobile, but he poor in the air. He's less clumsy, but a woeful passer. There is room for improvement. Hopefully he and all our players will continue to improve next season.
