Got to thinking who I would like us to play before next season and who we may play.

I would like to play Bournemouth Away would be good, never been to Dean Court and I guess that MP will arrange Espanyol, hopefully at SMS.

Dont want to play The Skates or Brighton, F All to prove. Celtic would be good at SMS

We normally play a large(ish) European team the last friendly. Could easily be Espanyol or Celtic.

Being selfish, I'd like to play away at Gillingham for one freindly

We should play a Champions League team. Away to Bate would be nice! (They would also be mid-season so good for the fitness too.)

I'd imagine it'll be Switzerland again, followed by a couple of big European teams at home - seems to be the formula these days. Would be good if the club confirmed it's plans asap this year.

Espanyol and Dortmund in the Liebherr cup. Since Cortese has come in we've normally had 2 home games as well, one against a foreign team and one against an English team. Not sure if playing an English team at home is really necessary this season - any team that would be a good enough draw, we'll be playing next season anyway.

Not sure why Bournemouth, Brighton and Skates are mentioned when last season pre season showed we don't mess about with such little fish anymore (or Eastleigh).

Would be great to have a game against a well known European club at their place so we can all go on a jolly. Last one I can remember is probably Feyenoord about 12 years ago?

As if they'd ever put a pre-season friendly against Pompey, that would be stupid!

Wouldn't mind seeing a game against Bournemouth, definitely Espanyol, and possibly Watford or another team on the fringes.

Espanyol and Celtic in the Liebherr Cup sounds good to me. Few home games against European opposition and a short training camp in Spain with a few friendlies against local sides.

Given the number of teams that have travelled to Far East and USA the last few years wouldn't be surprised if we go on tour to one of those destinations this summer

Posted

Northern Italy maybe. A pre season tour with a training camp in the alps and games against teams like Atalanta, Chievo, Udinese, Torino, Genoa and maybe one of the big clubs like Juve or one of the Milan teams.

Can we play Celtic or Rangers away? Or Motherwell or Partick?

why not write to MP, Glasgow.

They keep talking about European football at SMS...maybe a trip to another country might be a good change of air....

Wouldn't be surprised if we have a pre season friendly vs Barca!

..dare I say I was thinking the same thing .....even if we played their " B side " it would be a good experience.....maybe they'd put Messi on the bench?

If NA was still with us I'd be 100% confident it was back to Switzerland but, all the same, I would be surprised if we had not already penciled in the dates and the arrangements already - before MP came on-board - so I'd still back Switzerland as the venue and the usual local low level swiss league teams for the first 2 matches we play out there. A variation on it might be the final game being an upgrade on last year - perhaps against a Northern Italian Seria A club - the most attractive and likely given the geography + connection is Milan, more probable though is a Lique 1 Evian or Swiss Super league Basle, less likely a German Bundesliga team from Duisberg, Stuttgart or even Munich - though very improbable....

I don't think a trip to Spain is all that likely but I may be wrong - and would be happy to be wrong- seeing us play against three spanish teams would be very informative indeed...and fun.

As if he had a say on where we went for pre-season. He probably had no idea where he was going until he boarded the flight to Geneva.

Hope they have learned from having so many home friendlies last summer. No need. A tour somewhere in Europe, northern Italy as has been suggested above would be great, a couple of away friendlies here. I'd scrap the tournament format for the ML trophy and make it a one off game against a big European side at SMS for the final friendly of the summer.

Indeed, if we do make it into the Europa League qualifying rounds then we won't be play many pre-season friendlies.
