Fair play league

Just a quick question to those that know.

Does the suarez biting incident affect the Liverpool fair play table, if at all?

Yes, it will affect Liverpool as he will effectively get a red card for it. Liverpool have already apparently said they don't want to go into Europe this way and it all won't matter anyway if England don't make the top 3 in Europe.

Surely England wont make the top 3 with the last few red cards there has been and then the Suarez incident along with his diving and multiple other bad challenges recently? You would expect us to go above them in the fair play table but England not to make it.

The England ranking is based on the matches english sides play in Europe (Champions league, Europa League). Red cards are not the only factor taken into account.

Other factors include the quality of the football being played, if it is attacking then points are attributed, if it is too defensive then points are taken off. Points are also taken off if players and managers protest a referees decision etc...

This is the criteria UEFA takes into account for fair play:

Yellow and red cards: If no cards are shown the score will be 10. Every yellow card will deduct this total by 1. A red card will cost a team 3 points in the ranking. If the red card is the result of a second yellow card the deductions of the second yellow card will be ignored. But if a player gets a direct red card after he got a yellow card earlier, the yellow card will be counted as a deduction. This score could become negative

Positive play: e.g. attacking tactics, acceleration of the game, efforts to gain time, and continued pursuit of goals. A team can score a maximum of 10 points and a minimum of 1 point

Respect to the opponent: e.g. returning the ball to the opponent at a throw-in, helping an injured opponent: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point

Respect to the referee: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point

Behaviour of the team officials: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point

Behaviour of the fans: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point

Looking at who usually gets these fair play places, it seems Scandinavian are dominant. Especially after UEFA changed it to top 3 getting places instead of just the winner + 2 randomly drawn countries. Be a while before we know either way though since the ranking goes all the way to May 31st.

Well i think this is far more accurate and we are in the lead by a stretch

it's not that at all, the PL fairplay league takes in far more factors than cards. Respect of the Ref, Respect of the Opposition, Behaviour of Officials etc. If Liverpool are severely judged for Carragher's moaning and Suarez's cannibalistic tendancies we could just finish in the prime spot for a Europa league place if England finishes in the top 3 which is by no means a certainty .

Wish I could remember the pundit who was speaking about this the other day. The said something about England currently being fourth behind the Scandinavian countries, but that England were expected to rise up above fourth.

Did anyone else catch that? Or does anyone know why we might be expected to move up the table?

... and the UEFA's Respect Fair Play rankings, based on all UEFA competition matches played at club and national team levels from 1 May 2012 to 30 April 2013.

It was the commentator on the FAPL Matchday Live feed. I heard it too.
