Tahar El Khalej

I was sat in that corner, against the newcastle fans. He definately caught him, it was rash and nasty. And ended up with myself being pelted by coins and abuse.

Didnt Telfer score a worldie aswell to win it ?

Dyer left ground on crutches and I think it basically ended his career

Remember that vividly. Last game of the season 2002. Saints fans got a lot of stick for cheering the challenge and booing Dyer as he was carried off. Then Telfer scored in injury time with a wonderful lob

If you just look at the picture though and were using that retrospectively I think Dyer would get a yellow card for diving.

Often with these so called bad tackles they look worse than they are. The shockers like McManaman's and even Sturridge yesterday are where they make contact with the man. In this case Tahar has slid in and won the ball and in the process Dyer has gone down quite easily.

I don't really get who you're trying to wind up!?

Nobody. Everyone remembers the tackle, it seemed awful at the time. The way tackles have changed you get far fewer of these now but instead the cowardly kind that McManaman and Sturridge made where they go over the ball.

From that photo of Tahar and Dyer it looks a fair challenge.

Yes... and from this photo Suarez didn't bite Ivanovic.

I thought it was a sound hard fair tackle, still do.

Bloody Sixty Clicks made a big meal of making sure Tahar got to feel the full heat of the pitch police as he rolled over and over more times than that Aston Martin in Casino Royale (in fact I wouldn't be surprised if that was the inspiration for that stunt). He pigged up his knees for a few days with his rolling about, one week he crippled for life, couple of weeks later bouncing around like a spring Lamb. Tahar was really upset at the thought of possibly having ended a fellow professionals career, tried talking to Dyer who totally rejected his attempts to apologise.

It was Last game of the season, and Matty was due to make his very last League appearance for the last 5-10 minutes, but Tahars sending off scuppered that idea, but fair play to Telfer he treated us with a goal out of Matty's book of great goals.

i always remember that game because of the sending off, the goal, and the teenage lad I was stood next to when Telfer scored had tears running down his face blubbering that he had never seen Saints win a game he was at!

I'm sure he just got the standard 3 match ban and it was years ago anyway so doubt there will be any action against the lad now?!

Did he actually get a red for it? I can't remember.

We always had some crackers against Newcastle though. Remember the 3-3 game where Darren Ambrose equalised last minute for them.

Yes, he was sent off. And we won 3-1 with Telfer chipping the keeper from 40 yards in the last minute. After the media sh!tstorm following Tahar's tackle (and Dyer's agent threatening to sue), I named my Fantasy Football team for the following season "Tahar Shot JR".

Disappointing to see El Kelloggs had dispensed with the silver boots which let to the crowd chant of "new boots Tahar" at one point.

Weirdly El Kelloggs only played 4 more Prem matches after that, 1 for us when Paul Williams got sent off and 3 for Charlton, where a 6-1 home defeat to Leeds in his 2nd match probably didn't help his case much.

On Mattys testimonial night the following week Tahar and Shearer had a bit of a good natured tame tussle for the ball in the Northam penalty box. Saturday's game still fresh in the mind the Northam started chanting "Shearers gonna get ya!". To which Shearer turned to the Northam with a broad grin.

Saint Charlie threads are always very strange.

They usually generate a good debate which is what this Forum is for. Three of my last 5 threads generated over 100 replies so doing something right...

Players like El Khalej would easily be forgotten if you werent occassionally reminded of them.

I suppose you thought the thread highlighting all Hooiveld's errors this season was strange too?

Actually I did.

Especially as he is not the only player to have had a challenging season. Why pick him out ahead of a Danny Fox or Kelvin Davis.

Even Lallana and Rickie make daft errors. Just as defenders all slips become magnified.

Especially when he falls over whilst accidentally kicking the ball into his own goal... :)

But you're right, there are worse players and it was especially strange after he'd been playing well for a while.

I was about 3 rows back from that tackle, an absolute beast. Nowhere near the ball, totally scythed him down like a piece of corn. Dyer rolled for about 10ft.

Great game as well, had a good laugh with the Geordie fans after who were still pretty cheery despite the fact that we had denied them a champions league spot. Always liked Newcastle since that game.

I think they were silver coloured.

I always thought they were silver Reeboks, but I have found a pic, and they were Nike Mercurial R9 Ronaldo boots from circa 2000 (I had a black pair which didn't fit :() :

We didn't wear that kit at St Mary's, so yes, it was at The Dell (and he also wore them at Portman Road, clearly).
