Robert Madley has been appointed to referee our game on Saturday, it'll be his first in the Premier League. I assume the powers that be have had to relegate so many of the elite list in recent weeks for terrible performances that it's meant they've had to draft others in to replace them.

Great, can someone try and persuade him that kicking the ball past Boruc is a free kick, and we get given a goal every time we complete 10 consecutive passes ?

He must be fairly highly rated, to be fair, as he wasn't even on the Football League list until two seasons ago.

Stuart Atwell though...

Remember this guy we've got did a very feisty Forest v Derby game last year. Thought he coped quite well considering, but he's making a quick step up to the prem.

just means he impresses the assessor not necessarily a good ref , jobs worth

Foy for me!

Jeez, there's a hell of a lot of competition. Friend, Mason, Atkinson and Foy are dire - and seemingly getting worse. I don't ever remember seeing it this bad.

I think that you just have to admit that the game has become too evolved for one bloke to control for 90 minutes albeit with the aid of 2 far away assistants. Sooner or later it will have to come to video arbitrage for important decisions, something like all goals being reviewed unless they're absdolutely clear cut.

My take on video technology is that we should do away with refs entirely and just have a guy with a load of screens in a booth issuing commands via PA and video scoreboard. Because let's face it, once we get into artificial goal-line technology, we may as well just sign it all away to television and 15 years down the line it'll be as stage-managed as WWE. Which is fine for WWE, but not really what I want in my football matches.

I agree with that. I've mentioned before that the National Hockey League became so fast-moving that they introduced a second referee in 1999. It's far from perfect but it's much better than it was. I'd be sad to see the introduction of video review in football, and a second ref might delay the day when that needs to be seriously considered.

How we've gotten to post #15 without mention of the awfulness that is Clattenberg I do not know! Hopefully this guy can't be worse than him or the other elite refs already mentioned on this list ;-)

Worst ref of all time for me is Peter Walton. He was the ref when we beat Leeds 1-0 at home. He was terrible for both sides. He then took charge of another game of ours and that was the 2nd worst refereeing performance I'd ever seen. Totally inept.

Brighton home. He gave penalties that weren't and didn't give the ones which were stonewall, as well as many other dubious decisions.

Clattenburg this year has been utterly terrible.

Yea he reffed our game against Brighton at home last year when we won 3-0 but gave some ridiculous decisions for both sides. Andy D'Urso is the worst ever for me - will never forgive him for sending off Rickie away at the Amex last year after he was rugby tackled.

Atkinson is terrible but we have won twice under him at home: Newcastle & Man City.

Chelsea did Clattenburg a massive favour with that Jon Obi Mikel racism allegation, as it completely removed the heat from an absolutely atrocious refereeing performance by Clattenburg and shifted all the focus to the racism claim.

I see no reason why having 2 refs cant happen in football.

Could you imagine turning up on Saturday to see Foy and Clattenberg as the official match day Ref's? Don't know I've I'd be able to cope. Means they would need double the amount of standard refs, how far down the leagues would/could this happen?
