Post-it note Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 More like this should be done with those on community service and also those in jail. Get them to do the jobs nobody else wants to do, acts as a visual detterent to others. I always remember when I was in the US a couple of years ago there was a chain gang of about 6 prisoners all dressed in orange, chained at the ankles escorted by a sheriff with shotgun walking along the side of the freeway litterpicking. Why don't we do this in the UK?
Post-it note Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 Wait for all the PC people to complain that they are in prison/doing community work for reahbilitation not punishment. Cut their fingers off I say.

Crouchie's Lawyer Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 Fair play. Going one step more towards Mr Controversial, I think this should be extended to people caiming JSA. They should work for the handouts, even if it is simple litter collection in town centres or something. Would act as a deterent to people happy to sit back and claim JSA without trying to get a job, and would make people try harder to get jobs. Would also mean the mundane jobs which people wouldnt normally want would be taken too, as they would pay better (generally) and would (in some cases) not be as degrading as doing something like collecting litter. They do that over here. In order for people to claim a pittance of benefits they have to 'work' for the council for 2-3 days a week picking up litter, cleaning graffiti off of wlls, etc. A good idea too, I think. South City Si Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 I'm sure they are bringing in, or at least planned to a sort of community volunteer scheme for those who are ,long-term unemployed and on the JSA. Something like afte 1 year the have to do community work for a month, 6 months to 1 year after that would have to do it full time unitl found a proper job. Hatch Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 The orange vests should also have their crimes indicated on the back as well. Therefore when the general public (ie me.) are walking by, we will be able to choose which one to spit on.

Robsk II Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 I actually do advocate a mandatory part time work scheme etc for people who are just sponging on JSA. Of course it's hard to tell, but either way, if they are ABLE to work, but jus struggle to find opportunities, maybe they should put something back into the nation that supplies them, very kindly, with benefits. Maybe after a certain amount of time, or if the person is clearly able to work, then sure, make them do something positive for the country and community. Not entirely sure about the jackets. Part of me says good deterrent, and a way of them being able to link what they are doing to the commuity conscience etc - but I also believe in rehabilitation, at least as a concept, though it's not always that easy.. and making offenders feel even less engaged, more resentful etc, could be damaging. I guess I think it would work well with some criminals and just make things worse with others, in short. A tricky one.
