PhilippineSaint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 GD = 0.5 points effectively. You're all very silly sometimes. Your playing with fire now I have seen of Saintbobby and MLG I will have no more of it. GD is the same as a flaming point if you have the same number of points as another team the team with the higher GD is above effectively a point higher not as high as the team above them that will be at least 1 point ahead of them.
Bearsy Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 you can't have half a point anyway. Say you had a point of a pencil and you made it in half. You wouldn't have half a point you would still have a whole point, in fact you would have two points (away goals)
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 That's a moot point bear as they would all be rounded up anyway. Phil what have you seen of MLG and Bobby? How did it make you feel?
PhilippineSaint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Well The driver ran over one of my puppies this morning not quite killing him so I had to put it out of its misery by wringing its neck. Just after the burial and mourning for the she dog mother Bobby came on and started about points and half points. He just wouldn't let up and as I was in the start of a wake for George (we call him that now) the puppy I was so frustrated with him. Then he started calling me horrible names and left. Strange at that point MLG started in with the same arguments causing my bereavement to worsen. Possibly MLG and Bobby are one ? Anyway better now the war has begun When do the nukes fly?
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 It's on hold at the moment. The trade off was, me and bear are now allowed to post on the match build up threads until next season and the matches actually mean something and the team might be slightly different. At that point, we will go back on our word and nuke them. Sorry to hear about your dog, some posters on here are so heartless!
Saint Garrett Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 If any West Brom fan was reading this they'd think we're a right bunch of loons!
PhilippineSaint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 What do you expect internet warriors but not a real soldier or Sailor amongst em What was this thread about so it can go back on topic?
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 What do you expect internet warriors but not a real soldier or Sailor amongst em What was this thread about so it can go back on topic? The line up will be something like this: 31 Boruc 02 Clyne 03 Yoshida 05 Hooiveld 13 Fox 04 Schneiderlin 08 S Davis 18 Cork 20 Lallana 07 Lambert 09 Rodriguez Substitutes 01 K Davis 06 Fonte 23 Shaw 10 Ramirez 16 Ward-Prowse 42 Puncheon 24 Mayuka But with Shaw starting if his Aids has cleared up and maybe Gaston instead of Davis, at least for 60 minutes. Thread closed!
de-fence Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Your playing with fire now I have seen of Saintbobby and MLG I will have no more of it. GD is the same as a flaming point if you have the same number of points as another team the team with the higher GD is above effectively a point higher not as high as the team above them that will be at least 1 point ahead of them. Sorry about this everyone. Team A 39 -1 Team B 38 +1 Team C 38 0 By your logic team B have this effective point over Team C. But they are both on 38 points hence with this effective point you have given Team B for having a better goal difference they MUST move to 39 points right? Cos you have given them this point and 38 + 1 = 39... But hang on, doesn't that mean they are now on the same points as Team A? And they have a better goal difference than them too so they receive another effective point. This is all going on logic you have laid out. So this being the case they must effectively now be on 40 points right? And they will continue their march up the league table until they stop catching teams with 0 or 1 points more than them with inferior goal difference. I obviously know what you're getting at with this effective point and in layman's terms (such as if you were describing the league table to your girlfriend who isn't interested in football (or maths)) then it does suffice but if you follow the logic through of assigning all these effective points in the grand scheme of the entire table then it doesn't hold up and isn't an explicit explanation for the situation. As much as you have refused to accept it until now (just imagine that the goal difference column is removed and a team's points total could be say 38.5), whilst still slightly abstract, assigning an effective half point to a team with a better goal difference is a better way to explain it as it prevents you from catching a team with one more point than you but moves you above a team with who you are on equal points. Or if there are 3 teams on equal points then assigning 2/3's of an effective point, 1/3 of an effective point, 0 effective points respectively and so on. I acknowledge that no one would ever actually say that but I'm just explaining the logic of this conundrum. Score prediction for Saturday... 3-2 Saints. Bout time we had a cracker of a game.
PhilippineSaint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 The Baggies will not score Boruc will be on fire saving us the extra point 2-0 Saints
Dig Dig Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 3-0 Saints, meaning that the 6 points gained will see us safe and into the top half of the table.
Jimmy_D Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 We could be mathematically safe next monday. We're already 15 points ahead of Reading and QPR with 12 available to them. If we beat West Brom, Spurs beat Wigan, and Sunderland beat Villa, we'll be 8 points ahead of Villa with them having 9 available, and 11 ahead of Wigan with them having 12 available. As they play each other, one or the other could then catch us, but not both, leaving us outside the bottom three.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Would that be on goal difference Jimmy_D or properly safe or is goal difference moot cause if Sunderland beat Villa there will be away goals and Villa and Wigan still have to play each other?
de-fence Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Would that be on goal difference Jimmy_D or properly safe or is goal difference moot cause if Sunderland beat Villa there will be away goals and Villa and Wigan still have to play each other? Bit boring when the thread was finally getting away from that
pingwing Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Can't we all just be happy that we are safe now and it would take a freak set of results for us to be relegated?? (best way to dismiss maths as just numbers)
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Bit boring when the thread was finally getting away from that Sorry De-fence, I won't do it again. Do you think Ramirez will play or will it be Davis? What about Shaw or Fox? I take it you agree there will be no other changezzzzzzzzzzzz
Jimmy_D Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Would that be on goal difference Jimmy_D or properly safe or is goal difference moot cause if Sunderland beat Villa there will be away goals and Villa and Wigan still have to play each other? It'd be properly safe, with goal difference not making any difference at all.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 It'd be properly safe, with goal difference not making any difference at all. That's good. I'd actually prefer it if we sent Stoke down (doubly good if it's on goal difference). Not fussed about West Brom, functional, organised team. Haven't been less excited about a Saints game for years. Thanks for making it interesting with the mathematically safe stuff but don't think Sunderland will beat Villa anyway. What happens if that is a draw?

Thanks for making it interesting with the mathematically safe stuff but don't think Sunderland will beat Villa anyway. What happens if that is a draw? If one of them draws and one of them loses with us winning, we're safe, if both draw with us winning, they could possibly both finish on the same points as us and we wouldn't be mathematically safe next monday. Also, if we don't win, we can't be mathematically safe next monday. Edited 23 April, 2013 by Jimmy_D
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 I reckon if we win, we are safe, maths or not. None of those losers are going to get 42 points and have superior goal difference.
beatlesaint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 I like mathematically safe, there is something final and.....well safe about it Us pessimists will always worry until the maths proves what looks to be the obvious !
de-fence Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 I reckon if we win, we are safe, maths or not. None of those losers are going to get 42 points and have superior goal difference. Agreed. And I think Davis should start ahead of Ramirez. Don't rate Ramirez that highly in all honesty.
Saint Garrett Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Think I would start Gaston on Saturday. J-Rod, Gaston and Davis in behind Lambert.
Saint Garrett Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 No Lallamas? He can come on after 55 minutes, when Gaston starts giving the ball away.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 I think he has been in pretty good form recently, got a couple of goals, well should have anyway. I'd keep him.
Saint Garrett Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 It would be tempting to start J-Rod, Gaston and Lallana, but really don't think we have the right combinations if Davis doesn't play.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 It's a tricky one isn't it. Punch probably should get a game soon as well. I think we should just leave it to Ponch and concentrate on talking about stuff like goal difference.
benjii Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 Why would no one start Puncheon, who has been better than both Ramirez and Lallana this season?
Dalek2003 Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 It'd be properly safe, with goal difference not making any difference at all. Properly safe is the only one that counts.
trousers Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 @Luke_shaw3: Typical, the first day we get some good sun I go and burn myself ???
Pilchards Posted 23 April, 2013 Posted 23 April, 2013 @Luke_shaw3: Typical, the first day we get some good sun I go and burn myself That's him out for a season then.
hasper57saint Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 St.G On the 'still' is that a small dog emerging from it's rear end?
Dark Munster Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 St.G On the 'still' is that a small dog emerging from it's rear end? Actually it's a dog with a really small face and a tail that looks like a llama.
Saint Garrett Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 You can tell we're pretty much safe....build up thread far less tense this week!
trousers Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 You can tell we're pretty much safe....build up thread far less tense this week! You spoke too soon...
Window Cleaner Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 I see that the poll on the OS has 83% of voters who expect us to win.Just 3% for a loss
Saint Garrett Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 I would go as far as I expect us to win...we're playing well, we're on form, they play half decent football and missing one of their best players, also in poor form. I think we're certainly clear favourites!
SaintBobby Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 There's only so many ways you can conlcusively prove people wrong on the GD argument without finally giving up on any appeal to rationality or numeracy. As for the game, I guess another low key draw. 1-1
Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 I would go as far as I expect us to win...we're playing well, we're on form, they play half decent football and missing one of their best players, also in poor form. Window Cleaner Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 Sorry, who is missing for West Brom? That would be Mulumbu; bit hit and miss actually but he was good against us.
Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 That would be Mulumbu; bit hit and miss actually but he was good against us. Oh right for that hilarious red card against West Ham. He was really good for them at their place earlier this season. Cheers.
Saint Garrett Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 Odemwingie is a shadow of the player as well....is he even playing now ?
Window Cleaner Posted 24 April, 2013 Posted 24 April, 2013 Odemwingie is a shadow of the player as well....is he even playing now ? don't think so
