BBC Football's preview of the match includes this interesting piece of trivia:

"No side has ever previously avoided relegation from the Premier League after losing their first three games of a season; Southampton lost their first four and yet only a mathematician would quibble now with the notion that they are safe with four games still to play."

[Of course, what was unique also was the quirk that saw us get three of the best teams in those first four games.]

In the 98-99 season we lost the first 5 games, and of course stayed up after another great escape.

After 8 games the joke going around was: "Q. What's the difference between the Saints and a cocktail stick? Ans. A cocktail stick has 2 points."

Forecast is rain - does that me another game with Ramirez out of sorts? He doesnt seem to be at his best when the weather's bad!?

Not sure about that, his best game in a Saints shirt was at home to Newcastle (IMO) when it was p!ssing it down all day.

It's not really. Couple of showers at most.

I don't think I've ever been as wet as that day walking back to the train station.

Oh wait, yes I have, Derby away in the play offs!

Gillingham away, 1st half bathed in sunshine, but all of us in the top row looking nervously behind as a black wall of murderous rain edged ever closer until the inevitable.

Cheers Trousers. Me and Hannah will be translating in the muppet show a little later today.

Still eagerly waiting for the translation..

Blackpool away under Pearson was bad. Stood in the temporary stand with no roof and the rain coming in horizontally from the Irish Sea all game. Thought I'd managed to save my match programme by tucking it in my jeans and under my two layers only to remove it at full time and realised that too was soaked through and disintegrated.

Good god that wasn't fun at all :(

Wasn't that Martin's first appearance?

Oh sorry, in a nutshell he says he is getting used to the food over here (it's a Japanese thing to always talk about foot like us and the weather I guess) and that he is finding his feet with the new manager. Then they talk about the champions league stuff and if we can do it in two years. He says "nah, the governer (NC not ponch) just does that stuff to wind up MLG on some football forum. The governer posts on it under the name Vman and likes going mental about people leaking stuff but the really being the one who leaks it himself. He also loves nothing more than winding up MLG, so every so often gets some designer to release some plans about a massive stadium. Last time he even included a jawa sand cruiser from star wars to see if he could get away with it and he did! Those guys are idiots". He said he hoped to be in the champions league in 2 years but he also hoped to bone Kagawa's bird and to be the first Japanese rapper.

They then went back to chatting about food. That's the gist of it anyway.

I haven't read this whole thread/site recently so not sure if this has already been posted, but I've just realised we could actually be mathematically safe from relegation this weekend. If we win, Villa and Wigan both lose, the most they can get is 41 points (given they have to play each other on the last day), and we'd be on 42. After we played West Brom earlier this season I declared we were going down - would be great to confirm being wrong against them!

Wigan can still catch us if they lose today. They have a game in hand.

Just noticed it had already been posted, but oh well. They can't - if they lose today and then win the three after that they'll be on 40 points. Aston Villa if they lose on Monday then win the next two will be also on 40. The two then play each other on the last day, so they can't both surpass 42.

Really worry Luke Shaw is not being managed properly, too many niggles for a 17 year old.

Over use?

New injury picked up during practice yesterday.

Fox looked OK against West Ham and as has been said eventually got to grips with the game last week at Swansea but I'm sorry, I really don't want to see him in a Saints shirt next season. The initial reaction to the news when he plays every week is "oh Lord, where's Shaw?!?" Competent enough to do a job as cover, some people say, but not for me. If we aspire to achieve the next level of football next season and challenge higher up the table, the likes of Fox need to be moved on. There, I said it. Funnily enough earlier in the season some people were saying the same about Jos but recently nobody's batted an eyelid to his inclusion. I'm pleased, because I like Jos since he joined, he gives his all and is good in the air. I feel sorry for Fonte but it's a team game and there are two centre backs better than him at present.

Still Saints to win today and move above Fulham and West Ham.
