Rut Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 A great pic of Saints top & Swansea 2nd. Looking at the teams/attendances etc it's funny how much has changed in 31 years. Even Pompey had a good chance of staying up in the 3rd division back then...
melmacian_saint Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 Interesting piece Also has anyone else noticed how the clubs in the League (all the divisions) haven't changed all that much since then?
The Kraken Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 Interesting piece Also has anyone else noticed how the clubs in the League (all the divisions) haven't changed all that much since then? Wigan and Notts County proving the exception to that.
Olallana Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 Now, THAT´S dedication to save a paper in 31 yrs to make a post on SWF Funny one though and some of us complains these days that teams have played different amount of games in the table. Look at that one, Saints 33 games, Spurs 27!
Badger Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 Wigan and Notts County proving the exception to that. Stockport, Luton, Darlington, Mansfield, Chester might disagree.
Badger Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 I was at the Saints vStoke game. 3-0 up at halftime, 3-3, the Whitlock scores a header from a corner late on. Saints forever having the ability to throw away a lead.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 (edited) I'd forgotten how bad Chelsea were in the early 80's and how poor the attendences were. There were 4 games with less than 15,000 spectators in the top division Edited 20 April, 2013 by Saint Without a Halo
Badger Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 I'd forgotten how bad Chelsea were in the early 80's They were very close to dropping to Division 3 at one point, might even have been 81/82 season, but shortly after that Ken Bates bought them. They then built a new team, including Kerry Dixon from Reading (who scored twice against Exeter in this press cutting). Also, noticed one of the Stoke scorers was Alan Biley !
david in sweden Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 Wigan and Notts County proving the exception to that. ...and Blackpool have done a bit better since then, but I bet Aldedrshot wish they had the same points as then.....
The9 Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 (edited) Interesting piece Also has anyone else noticed how the clubs in the League (all the divisions) haven't changed all that much since then? League 2 Notts County in the top division, League One Coventry in the top division; Then-second tiers side Luton, Cambridge, Wrexham and Grimsby aren't even in the Football League any more. The team top of the 3rd tier in 1982 isn't in the FL either, and 4 other sides in their division are no longer in the League either. So that's nine teams from L1 and above no longer in the Football League, how much change do you want ? In fact the most notable change is that only one game was played on a Sunday. Look at that one, Saints 33 games, Spurs 27! Purely down to cup runs and postponements owing to bad weather (81-82 was a very cold winter). Look at the results and all 22 First Division teams had played on the Saturday - they'd all have kicked off at 3pm as well.

Are you thinking of Watson's goal for Stoke? It was an absolute blinder, a 25-yard (or more) volley off his left foot. Don't think he ever scored another like that. Can't remember any of the others really, except that Whitlock's was a header from a corner or free kick; typical centre-back's goal, while Watson's was nothing of the sort.

Even Pompey had a good chance of staying up in the 3rd division back then... Pompey's attendances less than half Saints', as now. Both sides at home though which hasn't been allowed for a long time.
moonraker Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 Interesting piece Also has anyone else noticed how the clubs in the League (all the divisions) haven't changed all that much since then?[/quote$ 4 clubs in League 2 dropped to the conference!
Fan The Flames Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 I was swelling the ranks at Fratton Park that weekend watching my dads Plymouth from he safety of the home end.
The9 Posted 21 April, 2013 Posted 21 April, 2013 I was one of the 3,484 at the Newport 2-2 Walsall game.
oldskoolsi Posted 21 April, 2013 Posted 21 April, 2013 Skates getting biggest crowd in league 3. I think that's is the sole reason they started the bested fns thing.
Chewy Posted 21 April, 2013 Posted 21 April, 2013 Only 24000 at arsenal, home to the European champions (i think). In fact a lot of those attendances look light compared to today
John Boy Saint Posted 21 April, 2013 Posted 21 April, 2013 All lies everyone knows Football didn't exist before 1992. Seriously though it is always fascinating when you stumble over old Sunday papers.
