Saint Charlie Posted 19 April, 2013 Author Share Posted 19 April, 2013 Here's a counter question to you Charlie - would you wipe MLT from the history books and never have him known to the future generation of fans IF it meant Cortese stayed here for years and each year brought in a player of the quality of Ramirez? Good question. I couldn't do that as I grew up with MLT as my hero and for me he is the highlight of supporting Saints at school in the 90s as I was not born for the 76 Cup Final. However, I could understand if a 10 year old fan for example would agree to this. Fact is that events you actually witness in football are always going to mean more than something you see for the first time on a VHS many years after the event. Apologies if this causes offence. 70's Mike Posted 19 April, 2013 Share Posted 19 April, 2013 stupid question i would not swap the league cup defeat to Forest or that other defeat to Forest at Wembley for a place in europe special days for fans,
Hamilton Saint Posted 19 April, 2013 Share Posted 19 April, 2013 Personally I wouldnt for Europa League but certainly would for Champions League. Don't see what is wrong with wanting to see the Club I support being successful in my own lifetime? Would a Liverpool fan born in say 1995 be happy to go through their life and not win a title and somehow expect to be comforted by things that they were not even alive for? I loved watching the 1976 videos etc, hearing the stories and respect the achievement, but I was born in 1987 so for me the successive promotions were the only real success I have seen - if we got in the Champions League I would happily swap that for winning I cup I wasn't alive for. How solipsistic can you get? You weren't alive then, but there were lots of us who were. Do you understand how this time thing works?

Hamilton Saint Posted 19 April, 2013 Share Posted 19 April, 2013 Would you turn down getting into Europe now if it meant we won the FA Cup 20 years after you're dead? Really, it's such a hypothetical and, frankly, illogical question, that it's not worth an answer.
The Kraken Posted 19 April, 2013 Share Posted 19 April, 2013 Really, it's such a hypothetical and, frankly, illogical question, that it's not worth an answer. Yet the original question was worth a withering response. Fair enough.
John Boy Saint Posted 19 April, 2013 Share Posted 19 April, 2013 stupid question i would not swap the league cup defeat to Forest or that other defeat to Forest at Wembley for a place in europe special days for fans, That was worth it just for the moment when as the team was being read out and it was the mangers turn, the bloke sat in front of us turned to his mate and said "just listen to this" as soon as Ian Branfoots name was mentioned the Boo's were deafening!! Bit surreal as he had got us to the 'banned from Europe substitute cup final'. Actually the 1979 League Cup Final I would not give up as it will live with me for ever for 2 reasons, Lawrie Mac sorted my tickets for My Dad and me. But most of all; my Dad had never been to a Football match in his life (at 14 I had to get there somehow before the moaning starts) so to loose his 'cherry' at Wembley full to its 100,000 capacity priceless on its own. Stood behind the goal on the upper tier my Dad had obviously been touched by the atmosphere because when David Peach rounded Shilton to slot it home and we went mental I stopped, as I watched my calm level headed sensible fairly strict Dad going absolutely berserk along with everyone else..................... Still Bloody priceless 34 years later!!

Very good; don't over do it though, this is SWF, not Paxman on Newsnight.
thornhill_saints Posted 19 April, 2013 Share Posted 19 April, 2013 Simple question: if the 1976 cup win could be deleted from football records, but Saints get into Europe next season would you think thats a good sacrifice? I would as the past is often forgotten anyway but the present is more relevant today and would be more of a talking point. At my work my peers don't know who won the cup in the 1970s but they do know who is where in the league in the present day. Its a tough choice because silverware is important but I could do without our name etched on the cup if it meant European footy next season. Badger Posted 20 April, 2013 Share Posted 20 April, 2013 Never,Europe is just a holiday the cup final is etched forever in my mind. Probably more like a daytrip,or two, to be honest before we are out of the Europa Cup. As someone who attended in'76, may I also add what a bloody stupid question the OP has posed. SaintBobby Posted 20 April, 2013 Share Posted 20 April, 2013 Am I unusual/old-fashioned for not giving a toss about Europe? If we were in the Europa League, I think I'd be about as interested as I would in the League Cup. Probably slightly more interested in the League Cup, tbh. SW5 SAINT Posted 20 April, 2013 Share Posted 20 April, 2013 Never got this obsession with playing in Europe, as if it's be the all and end all, instead of actually winning something. I was gutted last year when we didn't win the league, really took the shine of the promotion.
