The9 Posted 17 April, 2013 Share Posted 17 April, 2013 (edited) Now we've had some stinkers, and yes we should respect any player that puts on a Saints shirt blah blah blah but the truth is we've had some real arse play for us since the FA cup final. So, who in your opinion is THE worst player we've had at Saints in the last 10 years? It's up to you how you choose, you can base it on biggest waste of money, worst player in terms of skill, least contribution - ANYTHING! Absolutely without question it was Zoltan Liptak, who was barely able to stand up with the ball at his feet, and once managed to dribble to the halfway line by constantly miscontrolling the ball ahead of himself, before slicing it off the pitch. Compared to him, Ollie Lancashire and Alan Bennett were 1970s Italian international standard defenders. Even Jordan Robertson and Ryan Smith looked talented compared to Liptak. The only one running him close was Pulis, and even that one-paced, flairless, unanticipative passenger of a "player" was better than Liptak, because Pulis could actually control a ball. O'Halloran is also a good shout, now at Nuneaton, but at least he was only a one month loan and might have improved, Liptak was meant to be an established Hungarian international, and he could not even kick a football without falling over. How could I have forgotten Liptak... oh right, yeah. That incident was comical, looked like he was trying to tackle himself for about 10 seconds. He isn't the worst player though, Pulis surely takes that accolade. The one game he played for the first team was a pre-season friendly where he looked like a fish up a tree the whole time he was on the pitch. This culminated in a shot from the edge of the area which went out for a throw in.
The9 Posted 17 April, 2013 Share Posted 17 April, 2013 Just had a look at Bennetts' career path... Cork City>Reading>Southampton (loan)>Brentford (loan)>Brentford>Wycombe Wanderers (loan) >Wycombe Wanderers>Cheltenham Town>AFC Wimbledon And this guy started as your first choice CB in the Npc FFS. ...alongside Chris Makin ! Ah, but I also saw Pulis in the reserves, and whilst he was slow, failed to read anything, or mark anything and even the 17 year olds in the team knew not to pass to him... actually, he looked like a game of FIFA where the coding has gone awry and all the player does is shadow the ball from 10 yards away... at least I saw him control the ball a couple of times. Pulis played right back one time. Looked awful, and Jamie Hatch got his place back the match after - that's Jamie Hatch who was released and then signed for footballing giants Tiverton and Weymouth. UpweySaint Posted 17 April, 2013 Share Posted 17 April, 2013 With regard to most disappointing the ex Ipswitch guy signed by Burley (he was Spanish, idiakas I think). Based on his past performances I expected better things but did not delivery. Age likely to have played a part but wasn't the creative play maker we had all hoped! Bennett the defender was also complete turd! I remember watching a game live at uni, could have been against Portsmouth and he was like a rabbit in headlights! Idiakez, scored a fantastic free kick against us and looked great for Derby whenver we played them, was beyond useless for us! Remember being gutted about that, had a flash back when we almost had Calderon from Brighton simply for the Spanish connection and trying to nick one from our "rivals". david in sweden Posted 17 April, 2013 Share Posted 17 April, 2013 Vincent Pericard looked anything but a footballer when he was here on loan. Jelle Van Damme has to be the biggest waste of money of the last 10 years. £2.5m, made 6 appearances. now you've got the makings of a good ( I mean bad) ...list there, Turkish... can we add...a few more of those who NEVER played?.......e.g. Sarmiento, Forecast, Pulis....must have cost us a packet in salaries, and not a single League game between them... Window Cleaner Posted 17 April, 2013 Share Posted 17 April, 2013 I would say that on a value for money basis Tinman Delgado is right up there. With salaries and his cousin he must have cost us somewhere north of 6 million for very little return.

fareham saint phil Posted 18 April, 2013 Share Posted 18 April, 2013 Think Mark Hughes deserves a mention, over paid and couldn't be arsed to be here, yes he scored a couple of goals (one beauty v newcastle) but never really lived up to the hype and in my opinion he was never a team player (did he ever pass to MLT). The most fun I had watching him was predicting a yellow card about 5 seconds before it happened, talk about the red mist!!

Turkish Posted 18 April, 2013 Share Posted 18 April, 2013 Haha, no - but I've loved our other Swedes - Ostlund, the Svensson's... just those two.... ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH! behave, Ostlund was terrible but he had that all important quality that our olders players need once they can be described no longer as young, hungry and guarenteed to improve and that's running around a lot. The ability to run around a lot, preferably quickly covers over a multitude of faults and makes up for lack of any football ability whatsoever in a lot of our fans eyes. krissyboy31 Posted 18 April, 2013 Share Posted 18 April, 2013 Most disappointing player is Steve De Ridder for all the hype and not delivering on a regular enough basis Worst player Alan Bennett or Steve O' Halloran This sums it up for me. O'Halloran was signed on loan because MON saw him as the next best thing and wanted him to play as much as possible. Can't remember how many appearances he made but the first was one too many. edprice1984 Posted 18 April, 2013 Share Posted 18 April, 2013 Have to say based on money earned against talent and effort put in by said player - Olivier Bernard must be up there as the worst. However if you were to just work on the basis of actually the sh*test player, has to be Pulis. His wikipedia page on games played etc is laughable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Pulis I am a week older than him, it makes me angry to think that I could have earned just as much as him (probably more, as I am sure I am as good, if not better than him anyway). Just for the fact that he was born I hope we relegate Stoke on the final day!
alpine_saint Posted 18 April, 2013 Share Posted 18 April, 2013 So many to choose from.... My favourites are Forecast (Pulis may have been equally sh*t, but stories havent reached me of him being an arrogant billy-big-balls in town) Idiotkez for being the biggest load of overrated sh*t we ever signed (I am hoping he doesnt face competition from Ramirez over time) Davenport for being the most totally disinterested w*nker since David Speedie

I'd be interested to see what the win percentage rate was like with him in the team. david in sweden Posted 18 April, 2013 Share Posted 18 April, 2013 (edited) Ostlund was as bad as Nilsson and Jakobsson as footballer, but at least he had other attributes to weigh that up...[/quote) Östlund was a type of Frannie Benali..a cult figure with fans of Stockholm clubs, not the most skilful or talented player, but could take it or hand it out ...Stockholmers still smile when they hear his name. Nilsson actually had a couple of good seasons at club level in Sweden playing as an attacking midfielder, and scored a couple of those "never to be forgotten " type goals, but he came into the Swedish squad at a time when there was a crisis with injured full-backs. He was tried at RB ..and then LB in a major tournament (and by some fluke played a star winger out of a game) and suddenly his reputation caught up with him. After he signed for Saints, I was waiting for him to be picked ....as an attacking midfielder, but it never happened, as he turned in more than a few very mediocre performances. When he eventually moved to one of the Greek Prem. sides, he helped them win the Greek title that season right player for wrong club at the wrong time. Andreas Jakobsson played international games in a "Claus-type" role alongside Michael Svensson, and the pair looked totally unbeatable for a couple of seasons, sadly by the time he came to us he was past his "best-buy date" and he never had the pace to cope with the Prem, which was sad when Swedish fans saw his career crumble, as he'd had a very good run in the Swedish side for several years. Too little-too late. Edited 18 April, 2013 by david in sweden

JackFrost Posted 19 April, 2013 Share Posted 19 April, 2013 Jermaine Wright - Jesus what an awful player. No shock when he a season or 2 later was playing for Croydon or something like that.. Olly Lancashire - All he did was get sent off it felt like. Neil McCann - My only memory of him is trying to tackle Gerrard but then falling over. Bernard - Really rated him, til he played for us. Didnt care, offered nothing, terrible. Euell - Was pretty awful on his day. Yep after he left us he was released after a season at Blackpool, played for a season at Isthmian League level and then retired. People said that he was typically one of our scapegoats, but he was genuinely playing at a level which he was nowhere near good enough for. Just imagine, if we'd have got promoted under Burley that season he's have been playing in the PL

sidthesquid Posted 19 April, 2013 Share Posted 19 April, 2013 I think Jason Euell was the worst ever value for money - he was on a big, big salary which was why we couldn't shift him for years, and though he tried, he looked like a punch-drunk fighter and seemed scared of the ball. Not a happy time for him or us, but amazingly he dragged another five years out of his career.
