BlakeySFC Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 Champ promotion, such a tough league to get out of.
SNSUN Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 Promotion from the Championship. We were the biggest (and perhaps best) team in the JPT and League One, so that was expected and not a shock, and we clearly had the talent to stay up this year, no matter how hairy it's been. To get promoted from the Championship though in our maiden season in it, that took some doing with largely the players we had in League One. A nod to Adkins here, of course.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 16 April, 2013 Author Posted 16 April, 2013 I think we need a poll? Mixed views so far
Golden Balls Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 Yep. Promotion from the NPC. Just a shame we didn't win a league on the way up though.
Stud mark of doom Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 Agree it's 2) but 1) top half this season might run it close.
Hockey_saint Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 To be fair, we should have won the championship title but as it appears to be a poisonous chalace I think dodged the bullet. But I'd go for the twin promotions.

trousers Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 5) Winning at a canter vs Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea
VectisSaint Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 5) Finishing mid table in PL in our first season back up Finishing runners up in NPC was disappointing in my view, we should have won it, better than being best loser. I like 11th in the PL, it puts us top of the bottom half when league tables are shown, has a certain class about it and of course finishing 10th is not possible.
RonManager Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 I don't know. The question is too difficult. Please may I have another one please Bob.
bpsaint Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 We were expected to get out of League 1 quite easily to be fair, but to storm the Championship in the manner we did in our maiden season was an incredible achievement. Even more so to have never left the top 2 spots for the entire season.
S-Clarke Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 Our effort in the championship was incredible, and to do it with the basis of our L1 squad was even better. We just looked like we were in the groove from day 1, and never, ever looked back. Easily the best side in that league, just a shame our final position wasn't a fair reflection. Completely unexpected really, at best I was hoping for a playoff push. I guess that makes me a smalltime fan!
von Dwinger Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 Definitely championship promotion..... the bookies had us somewhere between 7-10th favourites for promotion in the off season.... Massive achievement...
jimbojones10 Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 do people remember how hard getting out of league one was and the run we had to go on to finish above Huddersfield? that for sure is mine.
S-Clarke Posted 16 April, 2013 Posted 16 April, 2013 do people remember how hard getting out of league one was and the run we had to go on to finish above Huddersfield? that for sure is mine. God, I remember that very well. Every week we got a massive result, only to then check the scores to see Huddersfield had done the same! Was exciting, if nerve racking! The win against Plymouth on bank holiday Monday was great, I'll never forget that day. Loved every single minute of it. I wasn't to know that was just the start though.
SaintBobby Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 (edited) JPT win. No question. Our only silverware since 1976. (ps...joking) Edited 17 April, 2013 by SaintBobby
whelk Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 Poll seems pointless but hey we all like a poll rather than rambling text. Also might have been worded as 'most enjoyable over last 4 seasons' as if anyone was listing JPT as the greatest ( not even a great achievement but the greatest) clearly taking the p1ss. Got my vote though!
Glasgow_Saint Posted 17 April, 2013 Author Posted 17 April, 2013 I think we need a poll? Mixed views so far Thank you mods
Truesaint Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 I know i will get slated but isnt option 1 still not 100% yet. Just saying, counting chickens and all that.
alpine_saint Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 I voted - just - for promotion from L1. Simply because of that last 15-game run. Will never be repeated.
sussexsaint Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 Championship season without a doubt. Laughing in the first few games singing 'top of the league' and pretty much doing that all season, incredible achievement. However to stay up a season with still a spine of players from league one is nothing to be sniffed at either
trousers Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 Surely our greatest success is last season's 2-2 draw at St Mary's vs Pompey? That result helped us win promotion and helped send them down. Win wn P.s. was it really only last season we were playing Pompey in the same league?
niceandfriendly Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 No 1. Surviving this season, because it's a combination of all of the above.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 Promotion from the Championship. Wouldn't change a word of that.
saints-cris Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 Voted before reading anything, glad to see most agree with me! Definately getting out of the Championship, first go as well. Some sides get stuck in there for years, losing momentum each time. It showed how we were a club on the up, but its just such a tough league to get out of.
Colinjb Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 To further echo people's existing thoughts. Promotion from the Championship for me. To take the momentum from that incredible run at the back end of our promotion from League 1 and immediately translate it to the Championship was astonishing. Nigel Adkins ensured we carried the crest of a wave to the top of that league and then turned us around after an inclement festive period to ensure promotion. Halcyon Days.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 I think staying up this season, expecially considering the atrocious start we had and the way Adkins managed the team until late November. It could have really harmed our chances to stay up (although not safe yet still).
Barry the Badger Posted 17 April, 2013 Posted 17 April, 2013 Championship Promotion, was utterly unexpected and as many other teams have shown it's a bloody nightmare to get out of.
The9 Posted 18 April, 2013 Posted 18 April, 2013 To be fair, we should have won the championship title but as it appears to be a poisonous chalice I think dodged the bullet. But I'd go for the twin promotions. Didn't do Newcastle, West Brom or Sunderland any harm in the past 6 years.
The9 Posted 18 April, 2013 Posted 18 April, 2013 No 1. Surviving this season, because it's a combination of all of the above. Winning the JPT kept us in the Prem ?
waterlooville saint Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 Promotion from the Championship - at the start of the season I was expecting mid table obscurity (and stability) as I didn't think we'd strengthened the team enough ... shows what I know about football (and very happy to have been proved wrong).
max_saints Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 Agreed with championship promotion. I fully expected a season in the championship to settle before pushing for promotion the following season but to achieve successive promotions was fantastic. prem league survival wise, I always felt our squad was just good enough to survive with our massive spendings therefore wouldn't consider it the greatest success.
Window Cleaner Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 Agreed with championship promotion. I fully expected a season in the championship to settle before pushing for promotion the following season but to achieve successive promotions was fantastic. prem league survival wise, I always felt our squad was just good enough to survive with our massive spendings therefore wouldn't consider it the greatest success. But if the squad was good enough to survive in the PL it was obviously capable of gaining promotion from the NPC. There are very few changes. Few will seem to admit that our squad was by far superior to nearly every otrher championship side and promotion was to be expected. Neverless having seen how players are written off as crap after a few games I guess it's understandable.
John Boy Saint Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 Promotion from the Championship first time for back to back promotions. The Championship is a tough competitive league where as a fan you have no certain idea which way the dice will roll when you pass through the turnstiles. to emphasise how tough a league it is. even today, with I think 3 games left?, from 9th down is mathematically in a relegation battle!!
The9 Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 I know i will get slated but isnt option 1 still not 100% yet. Just saying, counting chickens and all that. No, it's only 99.8% sure, or 86% sure even if we lose our last 5 matches. We are rolling in chickens. Or is that eggs ? Oops.
The9 Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 But if the squad was good enough to survive in the PL it was obviously capable of gaining promotion from the NPC. West Ham very nearly disproved that one last season with hindsight !
SuperSAINT Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 Real toss-up between staying up (if we do) and getting promoted from the CCC. I'd give it to promotion last year - We effectively did it with our league 1 team, and pretty much went the whole season without a right winger. Fantastic achievement.
Dimond Geezer Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 (edited) Going straight through The Championship in one season, we barely stopped for breath. Edited 19 April, 2013 by Dimond Geezer
The9 Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 Thinking about it a little more, staying up WITH the team that went straight through the Championship is an enormous achievement. Though a little closer look suggests we've added a few.
david in sweden Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 I can see which way this poll is going , but I voted for staying up. Stats. show that although at least one team normally stays up ....(on average) 2 out of every 3 promoted teams get relegated after 2-3 seasons. I won't dwell on whether we'd be better off had NA stayed, because I respect what he did ....but I love the Pochettino style of football. Going through three divisons in three seasons is a unique achievement for Saints, although it has been done before by others on rare occasions. I'm overjoyed to be back in the Prem. for me.... the Championship promotion was a foregone conclusion after we got promoted from L1, there just didn't seem to be enough other good teams who could keep us down last season.
aintforever Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 Promotion from the Championship at the first attempt was an amazing achievement, next to no one on here gave us a chance at the star of the season. Staying up this year would be a great achievement, but given what we have spent, not close to last season.
yorkie Posted 19 April, 2013 Posted 19 April, 2013 No brainer for me - last season staying in the top 2 for the whole season was a real achievement. To go up and not blow it was fantastic. This season has been a real eye opener - players really stepping up to the mark! JPT was a great day out. Promotion from League 1 was good but not unexpected. Promotion last season was a real shock. This season has been a fantstic ride - even with the start we had we played some great football without fear and it has worked. I really can't imagine about next season dare I dream about Europe - or on current progression The Champions League?
Paul75 Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 Although I think the JPT is at the bottom of my list out of the four choices, I think it was a major turning for the club at the time as it give the fans, club and the players belief to kick start our recent success
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 20 April, 2013 Posted 20 April, 2013 Well as fun as the two promotions undoubtedly were, beating both the current Champions and Premier League title holders this season must make us officially 'by far the greatest team the world has ever seen' I would have thought. That is how these things work isn't it?
