saint-crinny Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 Not sure exactly what these stats show - but would suggest that they back up my feeling on Gaston in that he has had a decent enough, if not outstanding first season with us. The big price tag has added pressure and expectation on him, which it seems a section of fans are now using against him when he makes errors in games. As an example, his dead ball stuff was appalling on Saturday, but outside of that, I thought he was OK and that was a clinical finish as he has done with most one-on-ones this season (wigan away aside). He is an outstanding young talent, taking time to settle in to a new league, new culture etc and am very hopeful that he will have a far greater impact next season - talk of selling him in the summer is way too premature, and the chat after Saturday from some about "why are we singing his name" etc was idiotic. Final point - I would say that he has had as much of an impact as Lallana on this season - a couple of outstanding games (Villa and Newcastle at home), some decent moments in others, and a few games where he has offered practically nothing. As Adam is a homegrown player he gets a lot more slack than a signing with a big fee, and i'm sure if people were putting a value on both, some on here would make divvy comments like Adam is worth double Gaston blah blah blah. When you look at their stats, both have played 24 league games this season (20 starts), Adam has three goals and Gaston has 5. Not sure on assists, but I imagine they are pretty similar as well. I hoped for more from Gaston this season, given what he has sporadically shown he can do, but both he and Adam will be better next season after going on a steep learning curve this time round. ant Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 Can't get much more in depth than that blog post - the statistics in isolation don't tell the whole story and the final paragraph is especially poignant. All in all it's a very good website, been tracking it all season. Is it run by anybody on here?
Jimmy_D Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 I think the potential's there for him to be our best player, but he just hasn't 'clicked' yet. He just needs a run of two or three games where things go right for him, like J-Rod had, and we'd start to see the best from him.
Hatch Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 really needs comparable stats for another midfielder
Saint Garrett Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 Hoping Gaston and J-Rod play every game we have left. Think some continuity and these two could click.
Olallana Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 Hoping Gaston and J-Rod play every game we have left. Think some continuity and these two could click. Yep, he would also benefit a lot if we had wingers cutting in behind opponents CB and Fullbacks to open up for his through passes.

Agree, not sure our way of playing really suits him at the moment. Lambert doesn't offer much in behind and Lallana cuts in. The only runs are Rodriguez's and if midfielders are running past him. Clearly got a lot of talent though, but his set pieces are f*cking annoying.
Mowgli Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 Not sure exactly what these stats show - but would suggest that they back up my feeling on Gaston . Hmmm... ...did you actually follow the link? Was the best player on the pitch Saturday. The key phrase in the articles is this - "teams don’t pay for his current ability, they are paying a lot of it for what the player may become..." We paid for both his current ability and his future potential.

Best player on the pitch????!!! Some people on here seem to think: massive fee = great player. Thus far, very much not the case - the jury is out on Gaston as far as i am concerned and i suspect the other players feel the same way.
saintbob40 Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 Put a bit of beef on him so he can hold the ball up a bit better and tell him not to have such sticky feet...i.e he should give the ball a bit earlier.... and he will be very very good! Presently he just shows flashes of what he could be so still a work in progress but worth persevering with

The key phrase in the articles is this - "teams don’t pay for his current ability, they are paying a lot of it for what the player may become..." I did read the piece and i'm in pretty much total agreement with the sentiment - excited about the prospect of what he could become and a big fan of his. My comment was more just saying it would be good to have those stats for say, Adam, Punch and JRod all alongside to compare, although I appreciate that the article does a lot of comparisons throughout it. Got sidetracked really by my annoyance at the reaction of the supporters to him around me on Saturday (Northam/Kingsland wing) and over the last few weeks, and some of the post match stuff on here, and just wanted to highlight the point that over the course of the season, he has probably had as much impact as Lallana for me. Lallana does not get anywhere near the level of criticism that Gaston receives - not that I want him to I will add, don't think either should be getting stick. For me, both have had decent enough seasons and hopefully, both will be improved next time round, producing on a more consistent basis.

I would dispute that, teams like us buy speculation but bigger sides do not in the main, if they do they are not immediate 1st teamers.

Thus far, very much not the case - the jury is out on Gaston as far as i am concerned and i suspect the other players feel the same way. Had more shots on goal than anyone else. His vision is superb. His ability to look one way anf flick the ball the other. It only needed one or two to come off. Actually I don't think it is a huge fee. I think the analogy is people think ita a huge fee so he should be better than he is. I do agree with the comments someone else made about Lallana. Different players but broadly same impact this season overall. Nearly everyone at the club sees Gaston as the most taltented in training. Can't wait for next year. If others are corrent we will see a much imporved Ramirez - not unlike how Morgan took a while to really shine.
eelpie Posted 16 April, 2013 Share Posted 16 April, 2013 Without reading the article it is very clear from the statistical analysis above what Gaston's strengths and weaknesses are. They do show that he has skills that set him apart from the ordinary Premiership player. A tackle win percentage of 82% is quite outstanding, and passing accuracy of 79% is pretty good too. I remember reading Opta's passing stats taken mid-season during (the golden age of) Strachan's time as manager here and not many players if I remember correctly scored above 55/60% for passing accuracy (I can be corrected). Gaston's stats for this are very high in a comparison and compares with anyone. I can't beleive anyone can have a 100% though but allowing for margin of error his possession winning skills seem top quality too. His weaknesses are laid bare, and frankly not good enough, but they can and will be improved significantly. This should not be a difficult challenge for MC's team. Last season individual Saints players also erred with plenty of inconsistent performances that cost us Championship first place, but my how this has been worked on since! Those with Premiership quality have responded, and how! It is a common fault of supporters who understandably want near perfection to criticise players weaknesses without giving credit for their strengths. (The baiting of young Dyer comes to mind, and also of Bale in his first season with Spurs). If they expect every young footballer to be perfect they should support Barcelona. Does Ramirez have the talent, inventiveness and intelligence to become a major player in the Prem next season? Of course. I hope it is with us! The key phrase in the articles is this - "teams don’t pay for his current ability, they are paying a lot of it for what the player may become..." No he wasn't, he really wasn't. He scored a goal and made one or two opportunities, but his dead ball deliveries were a complete waste of time every time, and it was embarrassing how bad they were. I am a big fan of Gaston, but he had an average game at best on Saturday, and I think that is being kind. Davis, Morgan, Cork, Clyne all much better last weekend.
