Jos Hooiveld: "I was the fall guy" - (INTERVIEW)

Jos has got a great personality, and is an extremely likeable guy.

Personally, I'm still not sure of his ability as a PL defender. His lack of pace and some of his wayward headers still worry me, my prefered partnership still is Yoshida and Fonte.

Agreed. Defence improved a lot under Adkins with this combo. Not seen any reason to change that personally

I'd be one of those people who had a pop at Jos earlier in the season, and more recently too.

Even when we've done well, such as up at Reading, there were points in those games where we could have been down to ten men. The goal against Chelsea saw him slip on his arse, and I've seen him do that a few times where we haven't been punished.

I am more than happy for Jos to do what he says in his interview, and prove us all wrong (again) but I haven't been impressed. Scared would be the more appropriate term.

None of our CB has got any "real pace". and it's unfair to pick on Jos. Jos is brave and good in the air and not afraid to get his head bloodied. (ala Claus L. or Michael Svensson).

Although Fonte is good on the ground, he lacks pace more than anyone and was single-handedly responsible for the 2 goals we conceded v Wigan (H).

The terrible tales about Jos' own goals are a bit unfair and O.G. at Newcastle was totally Fox's fault (not Jos'). At least none of them was the "classic " Gareth Barry-type efforts.

Given the present back-line and the fact that we haven't seen Forran in action yet..I'd stick with Jos and Yoshida for the time being.

Top bloke he's always looked to me.

However he has enjoyed one season too many at such a high level. And I'm afraid he hasn't proved anyone wrong. He is playing because he is the only left-footed CB we have ready to play (Forren?!?!), and the same clumsy challenges are still coming in. He can say what he wants but that was a foul and he had similar lazy challenges on Hazard and Mariappa inside the box that would've been given at least 7 out of 10 times, which they were at the beginning of the season (Tevez and Van Persie). He's also proved to be unable of even keeping his footing when not even that skillful players come round (see Carrol, Terry or Suarez).

Also curious that he says he was the fall guy, when he received less than half of the criticism that Fonte, Fox, KD or even Clyne received. Yet our defensive performances pre-Boruc improved without him in the side. They are stable now as well, but in a team at it's season's finest he is still getting found out as the worst one. I'd be surprised if he stays in the summer. I reckon it'll be Fonte-Yoshida-Forren-new singing, or maybe just three CBs.

Still I'd sign up to have the career he's had any day.

I think he has improved a lot, in line with the entire defensive improvement we have seen. Thought he was magnificent against Liverpool, and other than the one slip against Chelsea he had Torres in his back pocket. Wins absolutely everything in the air too.

Agreed that with our ambitions he is not at that level, but certainly proved he is a capable PL defender IMO and will be a decent squad player if we were to go out and bring in a top quality centre back.

For me Jos is a good backup but sadly we need better in the first team next season.

He could do a job if needed in an emergency but the guy is just too clumsy/error prone to be starting week in week out, and I think Yoshida and Fonte are simply better defenders. If he can eliminate the mistakes then fair play but so far he hasn't and he continues to consistently make one or two errors per game where sometimes it has cost us and sometimes it hasn't.

I hope he does stay for the next few seasons and I do think he's got more than his fair share of stick his season but I just don't think he's good enough to be a regular starter.

I like him and he's a good squad player, but I don't understand what's happened to Fonte. He was playing really well and the defence had improved a lot. Still think Fonte is top flight quality and wouldn't want him to leave. Still bet Forren turns out to be very good too. Guess he'll get a game when we're safe but a proper pre-season and he'll probably start next season.

Isn't he still recovering from that injury?

What on earth is going on with Forren? Why did we even sign him?

Our defence is doing well enough not to shift it around and we aren't going to gain much by playing him. Putting Forren into the team could upset that as he isn't used to playing with the first team. I would predict that, injuries permitting he wont play for us in the last 5 games. Not until we are mathematically safe at least. Why risk it if we don't have to.

The fact is we have only let in 3 in the last 5 games and 2 of those were set pieces. If it aint broke don't fix it.

Am I the only one that thinks Pochettino's judgement perhaps deserves some respect when it comes to CB's?

He was an international in the position after all?

Or does that make me silly?

I like Jos, can be a bit calamity at times, but I think that is equally true of all our defenders. I think he size & stature make his errors seem worse than perhaps some of the others.

CB signing of top quality is absolute priority for me in the summer.

At 800K a league position even then it is not worth it, wait till preseason is over next year.

It's all to do with tactics. Pochettino likes to play differently footed CBs (I guess his positional expertise should help in this), and until the Forren mystery is solved he is the only one we have. I guess it's something to do with the full-backs going forward so much, meaning that if we loose possession the CBs can put out the fire more easily. I remember back to Yoshida's imprudent lunge against QPR, it was on his left side and he flopped it which lead to their 2nd goal.

Also reading through the interview again, I shall not question the personality of someone I don't know, but it comes across as like he's blaming the clubs he's been at for him falling out of favour. Not my definition of a great pro IMO, especially after some of the poor calls he's made in games.

Big centre backs are still required at this level to combat the likes of Norwich, Stoke and West Ham and Jos has done a great job when called upon contrary to what pretty much everyone on here suggested earlier in the season. A few deflected own goals don't make a bad player nor being skinned by Agero and Tevez. He does make the odd clumsy tackle and clearance, but until we find Rio Ferdinand Mark II we will continually have to sacrifice pace for heading ability.

Agree.

Jos is a big physical centre half.

Fonte is a cultured ball player who can play it out from the back.

Yoshida has a bit of pace and can read the game well.

If you want to find a pacey, cultured, ball playing brick sh*t house you are going to have to fork out North of £20m. Until then I think all 4 of our CBs have a role to play.

Jos is probably better in the air. With our pressing system, it forces the long ball from the opposition, even against Chelsea Liverpool and Man City we forced them to do this. I was worried when he started those games, but seem to remember him doing extremely well - especially vs Dzeko.

He probably reads this forum and shows that constant negativity towards some players does have an impact.

People like Saint Charlie who has been on his back all season should take note

2 out of 10 for trolling effort.

It's delightfully fanciful. I love the idea that highly-paid footballers come onto this forum, read what people have to say, and then let it affect performance.

Do you have a couple of transitional scenes to make this all work?

e.g.

a) Jos crying over his PC

b) A disturbing flashback just before the game where he remembers all the bad stuff that has been said on Internet forums.

c) Jos' friends and family on computers 24/7, F5'ing the screen in the hope that their special boy gets a positive mention from people who spend all their time on computers talking to strangers.

A few details, and I think you have a winner on your hands.

I'd probably say b)

Just as he's about to make a tackle, I'm sure he'll be thinking about what pap from Liverpool was saying about him on the internet, telling hundreds of readers how he's out of his depth and too clumsy. Undoubtedly, this negativity results in hesitation leading to a rash and clumsy challenge from Jos leading to a goal. So you see, it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy which Jos can't get out of and internet warriors should always remember that every post has a consequence.

This is mere 1 out of 10 fair.

If I'm from Liverpool, then Jos must be from Southampton - judging by the Dig Dig "people must be from where they currently are" universal constant you've just shared with the planet.

It had never occurred to me, and though I'm half taking the p!ss now, part of it appeals to me on a philosophical level at least. You are from where you are. Deep.

But yeah, I happen to agree with you. Some kind of flashback, with my name prominently displayed in username form, morphed and dissected by some over-eager SSN graphics boy, would be an ideal way to show "highly paid footballer upset by internet criticism". Make it happen, Dig Dig.
