Swansea put in a planning application for a 11,000 seat expansion yesterday now that their Premier League status has been secured for next season... ;)

Good for Swansea. That'll make their stadium still smaller than SMS.

Nope, it'll be 33k - which is bigger than St Mary's.

Do you see Swansea as a bigger club than us, with a bigger fanbase?

- Swansea averaged 15k in their 2nd tier promotion season in 2011 at the Liberty Stadium - compared to our 26k in 2012.

- Swansea averaged 13k in their 3rd tier promotion season in 2008 at the Liberty Stadium - compared to our 22k in 2010.

In the Championship and League One we got around 10,000 more than them. In the top league we should also get a lot more than them.

Why do you think Cortese hasn't submitted plans for our ground yet?

Dear oh dear Matthew. The Liberty stadium capacity is 20,532, add 11,000 seats that equals 31,532. SMS has a capacity of 32,689. We will still have a bigger stadium.

If we had a 200k seater stadium, Barcelona would be modeling themselves on the mighty Saints - IMO

Read the BBC article.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-west-wales-22159360

The club have submitted plans to increase the capacity, which from next season will be 22,500, to around 33,000.

Oh dear, Turkish. Mr Wrong!

Mr.Wrong.gif

Swansea are already increasing capacity for next season, so 11k more seats makes around 33k and bigger than St Mary's.

Swansea are now safe from relegation, so the application goes in for 11,000 extra seats. Perhaps and I mean perhaps, Cortese is waiting for the same thing.

BUt he's said many times we are going to be pushing for Europe in 3 years time, you even quoted this as evidence of his ambiton in the summer. why wait?

Why? Surely a project of that magnitude is needed long-term, regardless of which league we might be playing for one season. What you're suggesting is if we stay up this year we'll put plans in, but then if we go down next season we'll put a hault to all work? Either we need expansion to grow the club or we don't.

Why? The capacity of the Liberty Stadium wont be higher if i read the BBC article

http://www.stadiumguide.com/libertystadium/

20,520 (or 20,532 depending on which site you read) + 11,000 is 31,520 (or 31,532). SMS wil still be bigger.

Mr.Wrong.gif

You are reading a random "stadium guide" website that fails to tell you that Swansea's capacity is already going up next season to 22.5k. Add 11k to 22.5k and it is over 33k!

Mr.Wrong.gif

As I told you before, read the BBC article ffs.

You are making this all far too easy, maybe you should ask Steve for your £5 back and just post 3 wrong posts per day.

Here is it from Wales on Line.

The plans for the extra 2,000 seats are phase one of the total 11,000 increase. Capacity still smaller than SMS, you need to research things better Matthew, it's too easy!!

Again, can you not read?

If St Mary's remains bigger, it will only be bigger by hundreds of seats, not a huge amount.

My point was, please answer this question.

Do you see Swansea as a similar sized club to us, with a similar sized fanbase?

Your point will be relevant when they have a ground with a 32k capacity - that still appears quite a way off and they're sensibly going to see how each stage goes. Why aren't we putting our plans in yet? Surely it's not good that we're delaying so much on this? Surely someone with Cortese's vision, backed by the Liebherr's should have started work two years ago so that our capacity was ready for our time in the Prem? Can you think how much income we're now losing out on due to his short-sightedness and lack of ambition and planning?

You are wrong, you said they'd have a bigger stadium than SMS when expansion is completed. They wont, it will still be smaller.

Mr.Wrong.gif

They have a much smaller stadium than us at the moment and are doing it in stages. 2,000 seats in the summer up to 22,500, then another 5,000 up to 27,500, then another 4,000 if required. A sensible tiered approach to assess the requirements to expand. They will still have a smaller stadium than us when if and when the complete expansion is completed. Far more sensible than you're quoting of what crowds other clubs get as reason as to why we should expand isn't.

Hi

Can we have some extra seats for the West Brom game please as I missed out. Alternatively, can any of the people who just buy seats and then don't go, let me have theirs please? There is always about 10 empty seats at the bottom of block 1 and loads of others dotted about. It is annoying watching on a stream when I couldn't get a ticket to see literally hundreds of empty seats.

By the way MLG, were you wrong again? This is getting to be a habit.

Swansea are a smaller club than us currently filling a stadium that is 2/3s the size of ours and expanding it by 11000 in stages whereby it will still be smaller than ours. What point are you trying to make?

i have, post 38. They are a smaller club currently playing in a stadium 2/3s the size of SMS and are expanding it gradually, when complete it will still be smaller than SMS. I'm really not sure what point you are trying to make.

The club do intend to expand the capacity but are carrying out investigations (surveys) into traffic (road & walkers) impact on surrounds etc. Initially Cortese said at the end of last season if we stay up he would impliment expansion at end of season but now with the investigations/discussions, it will not before next summer.

No, doesn't answer my question. Seeing as Cortese has been here for well over two years they have had ample time to undertake the relevant surveys, which certainly don't take a year to do.

We've only been in the Premier League, selling out games regularly with an average over 30k for 1 of those years.

Are you calling Weston Saint a liar? :D

So are you suggesting Cortese wanted to wait and see what our attendances would be like for a couple of seasons in the premier league before deciding if expansion was nessasary?

I love this arguement everytime we sell out a game! Makes me chuckle.

Liklihood is we'll do things properly and when we're financially sound in the prem, we'll lok to extend. Don't think anyone doubts Cortese's ambition and the fact he has probably looked at plenty of different opportunities that might arise.

However I personally think if our stadium was any bigger than 40k, we'd struggle to fill it. We'd have to be in Europe and tickets to be relatively cheap for us to sell out a 50k stadium every week.
