Is this the game of how many players can we sign up long term before the club thinks Boruc needs one??

On the plus Stephens staying about for the future is pretty exciting!

Do you not think it's crossed the club's mind re Boruc? Is it really that exciting that Stephens has signed a new contract?

Thnx ;)

But if you were, would you want him if possible in a dreamy world?

It's hard to ever know how good he really is. He's hardly done anything the last few years.

If it was a case of Boruc leaving and a choice between him and Davis/Gazza I'd say VV.

But I think it's so unrealistic, if we were going to talk dream scenarios, there's a few keepers I'd prefer.

Instead of KD and Gazza it´s a clear one of course.

But I honestly think there is probably 8-10 better goalies just in La Liga.

But as you said it´s not realistic at all, just reacted to your first comment. :)

You'd chose Valdez over Davis and Gazzaniga? Wow, controversial stuff, are you sure?

anyway lads..back to Jack Stephens..... that's who this thread is supposed to be about.

Having watched a few " streamed" U21 games this season, I was impressed by Jack's performances and he does seem to be a good acquisition....as does striker Sam Gallagher, who is a giant compared to some of the schoolboys on the same pitch who scarcely came up to his shoulder. Maybe in a while?.. we'll have " a Sam Gallagher thread" ....time will tell.

Have to say I was a little surprised by this, whenever anyone had spoken about him on here I thought the consensus was that he'd stalled a bit and hadn't improved much. Doubt we'd sign him up for so long unless we thought he was going to impress though.

I've seen little of him since pre-season, but it was clear then that he had a long, long way to go before he could be considered for first team games. Against Wolves especially he was well out of his depth and really struggled, and it was clear that to be a CB he would need to fill out a bit and get a bit more strength. I also watched him in the U21 game at St. Mary's and while he had little to do to stand out, he had a fairly quiet game and I saw little to make him stand out from the crowd.

Still, he's definitely being seen as one for the future and I doubt we're shelling out much on him so its of course a gamble worth taking; and we'll see how he develops in the next year or two.

I'm not doubting you, and I haven't seen him play so it would be silly of me to anyway.

I do think however, CBs in general can take a bit longer to come on than other players. I can't think of a gat deal of CBs that have really come through to the prem whilst still in their teens, obviously there will be some exceptions of course. But I think compared to othe positions, they tend to take a bit longer to develop? Part of which you have identified, is the filling out aspect?

Anyways, hopefully the club see enough in him to think he can make it, and lets hope he does push on!

Yep, and I think this is exactly why we've taken a long term punt on him.

A good point well made Kelvins right glove.

In the early season criticism of young goalies (Gazzaniga in particular), the point came out that good young, central defenders are even harder to find.

It is the tough end of the game, and coming up against a 6' 2 " striker throughout a game takes a certain amount of skill and a lot of bravery - especially at Prem. level.

Stephens looks quite promising at his present level, we can only hope that the coaches faith in him for the future will be fulfilled.

Is it possible we'll use Stephens as back up to Clyne next season? IIRC, he can play as right back as well.

We signed him as a right back and had converted him to a centre back by preseason 2012/13. I vaguely recall we may have played him as a DM for a little while as well, but could be wrong on that.
