Hampshire CCC Season 2013

3.1 overs:

WICKET- Carberry lbw Johnston 10 (Eng 11-1)

Pity poor Michael Carberry, his ODI debut has been something of a nightmare. An attack of the dropsies, asked to bowl his pie-chucker off-breaks, now pinned lbw by Trent Johnston. The left-hander moved across his stumps, the ball just angled back, playing across the line he was stone dead. Ireland cockahoop.

And meanwhile back at the stately Aegeas Bowl Hampshire are prooving once again that the just cannot bowl sides out. We had Northants at 32/4 and they are now at 216/6, they will no doubt go on to make about 350 and skittle us twice.

looks like i was overly generous concerning the abilities of our bowlers, Northants now edging towards 450, 438/8

Michael Bates should be playing as wicket keeper in our Championship fixtures. I have found no one who thinks otherwise.

Six catches, two superb down the leg side (sorry Wheater you would not have got near) and a convincing 71 has to give him the berth for the rest of the season.

I understand Adam Rouse, also a good keeper and batsman, is being released at the end of the season. Griffiths has elected to sign for Kent for more game time.

This has been an extremely disappointing Championship season. We need to rebuild and it has to start with the bowlers.

Carberry, Adams, Dawson, Vince and Ervine will be our main batsmen. Roberts does not look like he will step up but perhaps he needs a run to give him a chance. As yet he has not been offered a deal, nor has Terry but I expect they will get a year contract. McKenzie will not be coming back for the season. His family commitments are sited as the reason

Bowling department is a worry. We have Tomlinson who is worth his place next year if he can remain fit. Balcombe has failed to perform this season. Wood should get the number 8 position vacated by Dimi but he will be in competition with Coles, if he is given a contract. Braithwaite has a year and looks fairly quick but I reserve judgement until he has a few games under his belt. Riazuddin will likely leave 1st class cricket. I suspect he will go to University. We need a fast overseas bowler but that is more difficult. Spin will be filled by Briggs with the emerging Taylor to give him competition.

I would look no further than Bates as wicket keeper for Championship Cricket.

So was Bates' 71 a convincing knock? As I understood it, his batting was the only real concern about him, hence Wheater's arrival, but if Bates has been working on things and is capable of decent knocks like this then it's a no brainer, he simply has to play.

All credit to him really - just kept his head down and worked hard to get his place back. It's been strange actually - I grew up only ever knowing Hampshire to have effective wicketkeepers who stayed for year... I can only ever remember 3 regular keepers, in Parks, Aymes and Pothas in over 30 years of following cricket, so to have this recent 'upheaval' is a bit strange. Would love to see Bates cement his place for the next 10 years or so, if that's still feasible in the modern game...?

It's an interesting one - post-Adam Gilchrist everybody expects keepers to be worth their place in the side for their batting. At Hampshire, we've been lucky that Pothas was just about the best keeper-batsman in county cricket over the last decade, and Adie Aymes was no slouch with the bat either. I've changed my mind about Bates. I think that he brings so much to the team as a keeper that he can't be left out. As somebody said on here the other day, the extra ten or so runs are worth sacrificing. Particularly if he can get to a level where he's averaging high 20s instead of teens then he should be unchallenged as first choice

That's awful. Cup semi finals used to get cracking crowds but the rise of T20 means this one isn't taken as seriously as it once was. I was hoping our game would have been on the Monday as I could have made that but will be playing today.

As for next season, in theory the batting looks fine and the bowling doesn't. I've never been that convinced by Coles at Kent and he's yet to do much for us but we're unlikely to pick up a better seamer from another county so he's probably worth making an offer to. Getting a quick overseas is all well and good but with the IPL, international schedules and the restrictive visas placed on overseas players these days (most have to have played some recent international cricket) it's very difficult to get anyone that is good enough and available.

Adams just gone for a very slow 50. Very very poor knock from Adams in my opinion. You bat for as long as he did, you MUST make it count. Hants have left the rate get too high. Looking like another semi final defeat.

As indeed it was, still think we gifted them the game because of the atrocious bowling from Woods in his 2 final overs when they were on power play. 20 runs less there would have made a difference and of course Adams is such a snail that it just put too much pressure on our middle order. A thoroughly unconvincing season and I'd hope for a captaincy cchange and some realistic bowlers before next April.

Unconvincing is putting it lightly. We are currently 16th out of 18 in the county championship. That it itself, is a completely unacceptable situation when you consider the talent that this team has. When you have guys like Carbs, Ervine, Mckenzie and Vince in your side, you are always going to challenge for one-day honours. However, we have pulled up short in all formats and in my opinion, serious questions need to be asked of our management team.

If we look at today... I thought 230 was easily gettable, despite 2 horrific overs at the end. They made their first cock-up by opening up with Roberts in a huge game. When chasing 230, these games can be won in the first 8 overs by getting over to a flyer. Hampshire have done it countless times in the last couple of years with Carbs, Lumb and Vince. Roberts, is a defensive batsman and was never going to do enough. Hampshire should have promoted one of the more senior guys to open with Vince (my choice would have been Dawson) and dropped Roberts down to 6 or 7. I also thought the running was diabolical, and Adams was the main culprit. Several singles on offer that he turned down and ultimately ended up strangling himself after crawling to 60.

Very very poor.

4,500 plus turned up in the end. Look like a stodgy wicket and it suited Glamorgan. Some very disappointed people

There has been a rumour on line (I am told) that Tremlett will not be offered an extension to his contract at the end of the season and may be heading back to us. The reaction I got was that we needed a bowler we could turn to but they are hard to get. Tremlett is a good player but spends more time off the field than on it so I doubt he is in Hampshire sights.

One to watch out for could be James Faulkner. Not a given but ...........??????

Haha! Faulkner would be an absolutely classic Hampshire signing! Totally geared towards one day cricket. Has a good slower ball, gets it up in the block hole at the end and can add a few useful runs down the order. But by no means a gun front line bowler or a gun front line batter. The county game is riddled with enough bits and pieces cricketers. What we need is a gun player in either one of the disciplines.

Tremlett would be an excellent signing. Although the trouble is... a) can he stay fit? and b) if he gets fit, will he play much cricket for Hants (Eng duties etc,)?

It's a very important off-season in terms of recruitment. Losing some big name leaders in the squad (Dim and Mckenzie). Realistically, i reckon we need at least 4 signings to come in and instantly upgrade the side.

He is only 23 and has a taken 138 fist class wickets at an average of 22.9. He may end up a regular for Australia and next summer they only have a 3 match ODI in SL end of July beginning of August. Harris would have been the pick but he will only play for a Div 1 side.

Of course we need a gun front line bowler but they are not out there, especially for 2nd Div teams.

Hampshire CC tweet yesterday. 'well this is going to be tricky, 35 needed off 5 balls, come on lads!' i actually don't think they were being sarcastic. I know in the new corperate age it's all about spin and sending out an optimistic message......but yes that was always going to be tricky.

To play a wicket keeper over The strength of his batting over glove work is madness. A stumping or brilliant catch can save 50runs.

Seems we have a case of the old boys club in the management . There again as Bransgrove loves his people's club at Pompey why am I surprised

I know it's not generally the done thing in cricket, but I would love to see the club organise a testimonial game in the honour of Dimi. The man has not only been a fantastic servant to the club, but he is also a wonderful bloke and has given the club such brilliant service.

The game on Sunday didn't go as planned, and therefore the Dimi farewell was a pretty lame event. Love to see a T20 tribute game set for the final Sunday of the season. Perhaps a Hants XI vs a Mascarenhas XI, which features non-hants players that Dimi has played with over the years. I know Dimi is good mates with a couple in the current Oz touring squad, so it could easily attract some big players.

Such a shame that his services may pass without a proper farewell.

Cricket uses the benefit year system, has not Dimi already had one ?

Maximum batting points secured, largely thanks to Wood, Terry and Coles. The last 100 scored in 20 overs is decent going, but suggests we'll probably struggle to bowl them out once, let alone twice

pointless end of season game anyway but yes you're right, we got 2 early wickets but have now settled back into our usual generosity with the middle order.

Someone I spoke to at the semi-final at the weekend who seemed to be relatively ITK seemed to think that Danny Briggs was the most natural "thinker" in the team. Neil McKenzie would probably be the best short-term option, but it seems unlikely we'll have him for long (if at all) next year.

Also had it suggested that Ervine might be off at the end of the year. Left out of the side for this game to give Sean Terry an opportunity (one he seems to have taken), could be some wholesale changes in the winter.

Letting Ervine go would be pretty brainless,. He's had an average Championship season this year but so have many others and we'll need some experience with Mascarenhas and McKenzie going. He signed a contract until 2016 at the start of the season as well.

On paper we actually have the basis of a prettty decent 4 day side, albeit lacking in the seam bowling department. We'll surely have to go for an overseas quick or seamer for next year if we can find one available for the majority of the season. Briggs also hasn't really come on like we'd have hoped by now.

Was up there today (week off work so thought why not!) and Dawson and Vince were very impressive albeit against some fairly moderate bowling. Another season like this next year and Vince will be well in contention for an England place. It was doing a bit early on though so Terry did well to battle through that.

Grace Road is a dump...some of the smaller county grounds have character but struggled to find any redeeming features here!
