SO16_Saint Posted 8 April, 2013 Share Posted 8 April, 2013 My year long Norton security subscription is coming to an end, what is the best free one nowadays? It used to be AVG for free - that still the case? Thanks!

Pugwash Posted 8 April, 2013 Share Posted 8 April, 2013 Avast. Currently seems a bit better than AVG.

Bearsy Posted 8 April, 2013 Share Posted 8 April, 2013 i ride internets bareback yo. People is always saying it's risky but i seem to be ok so far and for me having extra levels of protection reduces the thrill and also affects the performance of my equipment. tony13579 Posted 20 May, 2013 Share Posted 20 May, 2013 Microsoft Security Essentials! It's free. It's designed for windows I have installed it on about10 machines owned by some of the daftest computer users and none have had any issues or viruses. stu0x Posted 20 May, 2013 Share Posted 20 May, 2013 Just use the built in stuff like Defender, and make sure you have Hijackthis installed and ready to go should you run into issues. Beyond that, I find the security 'suites' like Norton cause more problems than they solve, getting their grubby little fingers into everything you do, invariably running a dozen processes in the background and slowing everything to a crawl. If you've got the basics and employ a modicum of common sense (ie you know when it says "CLICK HERE FOR FREE PORN!!!"? Well, don't) you'll avoid the vast majority of infections, and any you do get can be swiftly euthanised with a combination of Safe Mode and HJT
