Colinjb Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 This season I mean. It looks as though the campaign could be mellowing out to Saints finishing in mid-table obscurity. Anyone feeling a little underwhelmed by this? No last day survival nerves, checking results from elsewhere while praying for a late-late winner from somewhere, anywhere? Personally I couldn't be happier, 6 games are coming up and they are there to just be enjoyed, but is anyone missing the prospect of a nail-biting run in?
Saint Garrett Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Have to say having just bought tickets for Swansea I was hoping we'd need to go there and win. It seems that if we beat WHU on Saturday we could be all but confirmed as safe and it will be a mid table nothing game! However I'm not complaining too much!! We can still finish above them after all...
saints-cris Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Nope, I'd have taken this at the start of the season. Not getting relegated was the aim, and we're almost there. We're playing some beautiful football with a young side flourishing under a new manager. Everything is looking good for next season right now. We just gotta get there now, so close.
pap Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Not really. I've mentioned this several times, but our placement this year is hugely important for next season's campaign. We cannot begin next season billed as relegation candidates if we want to attract good players on good terms.
Saint_clark Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 I will enjoy any wins after safety is confirmed just as much as those before. Seasons like this (and hopefully those coming up) are the reward for those of us that sat through all the sh*t.
Junior Mullet Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Nope. Feeling very excited at the prospect of a top half finish. Want us to get as many points as possible and finish high up the table as possible. How can anyone watch our fantastic team and feel anticlimatic? And BTW the prosepct of Summer and next year are fraptastic.
CWD Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 No not at all. I always think back to watching us lose at home to Rochdale just before Adkins came in, and I thought then that that was it, we were never going to be a PL team again. Despite the **** that I'd sat through in the previous seasons, that was a real low point, as so much was expected of the team that year and it seemed to be fizzling out before it even started. Then of course NA came in and everything changed very quickly. So with this game in mind, and all the other times I've sat in St Mary's and wondered if I'll ever know success again, no I am enjoying every kick of every game this season, and I'll cheer a goal against Stoke on the last day if we're 10 points clear of relegation just as much as I have cheered the wins against Man City and Chelsea
Pilchards Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Nope. Feeling very excited at the prospect of a top half finish. Want us to get as many points as possible and finish high up the table as possible. How can anyone watch our fantastic team and feel anticlimatic? And BTW the prosepct of Summer and next year are fraptastic. Totally agree, I can't wait for the prediction from the so called experts on us next season. Will they put us down as a relegation battle or chasing a top ten?
alpine_saint Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Mid table ? Hopefully Obscurity ? Certainly not. We are back on the footballing map. Perfectly happy with things the way they are. If we had done something daft like qualify for Europe, we'd be back down again next season. One step at a time. This season looks like a massive achievement. Thanks to both NA and MP.
SuperSAINT Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 If it happens, I'll never be so happy to face mid-table obscurity.
Andre Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 I see your point, but I think I'd rather be safe and then just enjoy the last few games of the season in a good mood!
Junior Mullet Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Oh and by the way....we may get a chance to send Sunderland or Stoke down in our last few games and therefore we are likely to be focus of attention rather than obscure. Much prefer things being that way around.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 If you'd have told me at the start of the November that come mid-April we'd be upwardly mobile, 6 points clear of relegation, -7 goal difference, 11th in the league and 100/1 for relegation I would have bitten your hand off. And in case you forgot what the table looked like after the West Brom result: http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/premier-league/2012-2013/table/2012-11-05
beatlesaint Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 I can cope a hell of a lot better with mid table obscurity than having to win the last match to stay up thankyou very much

NOT.....
Minty Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 No, and it's also worth bearing this in mind when considering final league placing: http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2012/06/19/premier-league-tv-rights-qa-including-where-the-money-goes-and-what-next-190601/ (Not sure if there is any better article showing what we might earn this season, it was the best I could find after a quick Google)

I'm sure there are people who agree with your opening sentence Colin, but better mid table " obscurity " than a relegation disaster. Let's look at these remaining games as practice matches....... before next season's onslaught on a Euro place. Edited 8 April, 2013 by david in sweden
Bananaman Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 whats the difference in prize money per league place.... clutching at straws??
Hamilton Saint Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 No temperature? No air pressure? No wind speed?
CB Saint Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Not a chance - mid table obscurity is absolutely fine with me, I welcome it, crave it in fact. I do not want to go into the last game needing something to stay up - you can shove last day excitement up your bracket!!!
Olallana Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 whats the difference in prize money per league place.... clutching at straws?? Last year about £800k in difference for each position....10th place gave £8.3m.
Made in Southampton Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Last year about £800k in difference for each position....10th place gave £8.3m. Didn't I hear somewhere that this year (or next) it doesn't matter where you finish the spoils are shared equally?
Olallana Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 Didn't I hear somewhere that this year (or next) it doesn't matter where you finish the spoils are shared equally? It´s the prize money based on position in the table. Money from tv agreements are shared equally. Saw a good link in another thread about it but dont remember which one now.
Minty Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 You mean mine, up at post #18? No, and it's also worth bearing this in mind when considering final league placing: http://www.sportingintelligence.com/2012/06/19/premier-league-tv-rights-qa-including-where-the-money-goes-and-what-next-190601/ (Not sure if there is any better article showing what we might earn this season, it was the best I could find after a quick Google)
the saint in winchester Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 I started the season dreaming of "mid table obscurity" so if we achieve that I shall be ecstatic. Bring it on.

We conceded a staggering 28 goals in our first 10 games (admittedly against strong teams); but then conceded only 25 in the following 22 games, a goals per game ratio that would put us in the top 4 or 5 defensive teams in the league. Not too shabby for a team that's maligned for its defending. Lends credence to the idea that individual mistakes/confidence -rather than poor tactics or positioning- were costing us. Ohio Saint Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 I miss the relegation battle, but in the same way as I miss hitting my thumb with a hammer or getting a splinter under a finger nail from the days I still plied my trade as a carpenter. Miss it? Yes. Enjoy it? No.
BlakeySFC Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 I'd absolutely love an 'anticlimatic' end to the season. I seriously don't want to go into any of the remaining games this season knowing we have to win them. I'd be incredibly happy and proud of the players if we can stay up, and even more prouder and happier if we can finish Top-12 this season, it really would be a magnificent achievement. Would love if we can beat WHU on Saturday then go down to Swansea the week after and actually be able to enjoy the game without feeling sick for the whole 90 minutes.
Kingsland Red Posted 8 April, 2013 Posted 8 April, 2013 It could / should be the first time since 2006 that we have nothing at stake going into the final few games. No stress like against Manure, Derby, Sheffield United, Walsall, Coventry etc. Add that to all those games in the 1990s, at the Dell against Everton etc and the games at West Ham and Palace and we have certainly been put through the wringer. I'm going to be like an armchair viewer, stress free enjoyment sitting back in my Kingsland reclining plastic seat with all my chums from many years of suffering. Nah, probably not, we'll find something to get stressed about - Fat Sam, Di Canio, Pulis, any ex-Skate etc.
