Saints vs West Ham - Build Up

This game will reveal wether we can adapt and have any kind of plan b against direct teams, we have really struggled against more direct route one teams. I think westham will just bypass our midfield and get it straight to their attackers and our defence is fragile without midfield assistance.

As, in fact, a whu supporter pointed out on the kumb buildup thread. iirc, he said "their pressing game will count for nothing when Collins lumps it 60-70 yards over them to our centre forwards".

Last few games we´ve had a lot of defenders on the bench, today is the other way around.

Fox hasn´t played a full game any time he has started under MP I think...... if he again just lasts 65-70 min.....is it Fonte on and and Yoshi out on LB then...?

If he can't come in and play 90 minutes at full back then there's something wrong. He may not be sharp (what's new) but fitness really shouldn't be a problem for a left back.

I agree completely, but he hasn´t been able to play 90 mins for whatever reason. Yes he has got some knocks in some of the games but I have had the feeling that those knocks were very convenient for him.....maybe being a bit harsh on him though....

I'm having faith in Fox today. He gets a lot of stick on here (some justified, some over the top) but despite his limitations he's the best available LB we've got. C'mon Danny Boy, time to step up.

I hope you are right and he isn´t such a bad player, I agree to that. Think the main thing right now is about confidence level for him.

And I really hope he gets support from the stands and that there are no negative reactions from there if he misses a pass or two.

Every player in our shirts should always get 100% support from the stands.

I am not a huge fan of Fox, but United tried the very tactic of sticking everything down his side and targeting him - he didn't play so bad.

He ain't as bad as everyone makes out.

I saw him live against Newcastle when he came on the last 30 mins

He is WORSE than people make out, his positioning is awful, he doesn't track runs and poor old Jos who doesnt need much encouragement to get things wrong looks lost because he knows he has to cover for him

Still here's hoping he gets through today

A little worried that we dont have much pace with that line up. Would have liked to have seen Puncheon on the right and what has happened to Fonte? Imo Fonte should be ahead of Hooiveld in the starting line up.

COYR, lets make it 4 wins in a row.

We all know Fox's limitations as a player, but until the summer when hopefully someone better is brought in to offer up competition for Shaw, he's the best we have. Lallana will have to appreciate he needs more protection than Shaw and do some defensive work when West Ham have the ball.

no Jos deserves his place, Fonte isn't comfortable on the left and neither is Maya. Jos has had some right good games of late.

He's had some good games, but he's also punctuated a lot of them with significant errors. Like giving Terry a free header from 6 yards out against Chelsea. He never seems to far away from a ricket, to me.

That said we need someone with a bit of physicality to stand up against Carroll (and not pull his hair FFS) so its probably a wise choice today.

Being discussed on SSN now.

How far can this club go?

Charlie Nicholas reckons we're going to improve even more under MP. "Great great future".

Thommo: starts by speaking about our defensive frailties. On Reading; important because it shows we can win against less fancied teams.

Merse: Reckons we just need to concentrate on league survival for next two seasons, but "very impressed". Summer will be crucial. Reckons Shaw will go.

MLT: Shaw and Cork crucial to Saints' turnaround in fortunes.

Stelling: Going on about Boruc.

Got to say, I am a little worried about Shaw myself. If he honours his pre-contract agreement and stays, he'll get a huge amount of love from the fans, myself included.

Talk like that and you'll scare him off.

He's only 17, easy on the pap-love!

My prediction. 1-0 at HT after Fox's attempted clearance from a Carroll header ****s Hooiveld in the arse and goes in. Second half we knock on the door to no avail until Rodriguez replaces Ramirez on 65 minutes. West Ham can't survive to onslaught and we turn it round with a goal apiece for JRod and Lambert.

Fair point, my complicated little mitten.

The obvious comparison is Bale, who currently looks like he has done a deal with Satan to get his immense footballing skill.

But yeah, if Shaw stays I'll be chuffed - and it'll be a huge coup for the club; what with many expecting him to do the offs.

All 4 pundits going for a Saints win. We're doomed. (Merse through gritted teeth  )

There have been a lot of gritted teeth lately.

But yeah, West Ham no mugs. It'll be a difficult game, but we'll do better than we did at theirs.

Nothing to do with confidence and all about lack of talent and most all intelligence!
