Fact is we didn't play badly there - were the better team in the first half. They were b*****ks. We conceded a poor goal virtually from kick off; but even then, after we got the score back to 2-1, we were the more likely to get the next goal *****il Fonte couldn't resist having a yank at the gypo's ponytail).

Even the stats show we dominated possession and had more chances. Not a 4-1 game, that's for sure.

No I agree but we 'dominated possession' in our half and did bugger all with it.

Agree and reckon its one of the biggest differences between NA and MP. MP wouldn't let us get away with stat-massaging, possession for possession's sake.

Poor game. We handed it to them on a plate. Defensive errors in all of their goals, though Diame's was a good finish. Yoshida at left back. Lambert dropped to the bench. I hope the players take the attitude that they need to put that result to bed by a much improved performance on Saturday.

They've always been a bit precious haven't they.

Wish somebody could dig up their forum discussion in the buildup to the first game - they were frothing at the gash to beat us. The fixation seemed pretty one way to me.

Think you're getting a bit carried away now. They don't play the best football in the world, but they're nowhere near as bad as some are making out.

Well, thats an opinion. Mine differs somewhat, they are right down there with Pulisball imho. They wont go down this season though.

Ian Branfoot I think.

Really ? Didn't realise he presided over one of our most successful periods in the premiership. Maybe we should have asked him back in 2004.....but er no, we went for that successful League 1 manager that was just recently sacked from the mighty Southend.

MP likes stats, big part of his planning apparently.

Who was the manager at the time ?

Please don't feed the troll

We won 6 in a row in 1991/92 under Ian Branfoot, having been in real trouble going into March. Does Dalek want him back? I seem to remember that this was a record at the time.

We lost the 7th game at home to Nottingham Forest. All I remember from that game is Franny taking out Stuart Pearce in front of the East Stand, and waiting for Pearce to exact retribution. Which he did.

So looking forward to this one - this is going to be my five-year-old son's first ever Saints game! I just hope the trip up from Cornwall is worth it. I fancy us to win this one 2-1.

Ah the first game. Always a memorable one. My first game age 5 I made my dad leave early and he missed Le Tissier blast that late free kick in against Villa. He didn't bring me again for a few seasons! Hope you have better luck!!

We cannot afford to lose this one. Think both clubs would settle for a draw. A point edges us closer to safety, although I think we will need 41 to 43 points to be sure.

Yes dalek, the same manager who left le tiss cruelly out if England team and who said that being disabled was paying for sins in previous life. The same manager who walked out on us to go to spurs. Yes he did brilliant with us in the short time he was here, however, his managerial history suggests it wouldn't have lasted and his big Achilles heel has always been signing players. With us was rosler, draper, tahar.

Just one thing, if all teams adopted the moral high ground many of today's managers would never have been appointed.

Football is a business and one has to gauge how far you bend in order to ensure the clubs future.

I suppose the most controversial is that of Sunderland, but can't believe Hoddle was on that scale ? Maybe you disagree.

Has Dalek2003 ever come close to responding to all of those points?

Yes, and as far the most contentious, Hoddle was wrong in his remarks about disabled people. He rightly lost his England job, but I believe he publicly apologised and moved on.

My real point has always been about the episode in 2004 when the failure to appoint Hoddle was made all the more critical over the disastrous appointment of Sturrock, a manager who was clearly out of his depth.

I would not have minded had we appointed a better manager, because the appointment of Sturrock set off a chain reaction that ultimately took us down. In fact the appointment of Sturrock makes me wonder whether it was part of an intentional act to punish the vocal minority for their opposition to Hoddle.

The tragedy was, that the vast majority of SFC fans could see that Hoddle was the logical choice and would have welcomed him back. Indeed, I guess that with a few wins under his belt, opposition would have soon faded away.

He was manager over 10 years ago. Get over it! This is the West Ham Build up thread...whats it got to do with this game? It's worked out for the best in the end so who cares.

I agree it was over 10 years ago and it is history. However, that does not make it any less interesting or relevant in terms of the history of the club.

Interesting for you maybe...really quite dull and repetitive for the rest of us. I respect your opinon that you think we should have got him back in 2004, but to keep going no about it in 2013 is just quite frankly boring.

West Ham Clubcall reporting that Carroll has a virus and so is a doubt for the game.

Given it's only Weds, I would expect him to recover and play, but would be useful if he was out IMO.

Thats your medical opinion is it? Without seeing the patient or knowing what the virus is or when it started.

Would expect him to play. Cole always seems to cause us problems...not sure who I'd rather played. I guess it depends how the game goes. With Vaz Te, Diame, Jarvis and Cole they have pace to cause us problems on the break. Carroll has the touch of a rapist.

If it's a genuine virus then he'd probably still be feeling the effects of it come Saturday, would they risk a jaded Carroll?

Or it could just be the usual mindgames.

It's clearly my personal opinion and a gut feeling, but thanks for trying to micro-analyse it and adding something worthwhile to the thread.

Thanks for showing Matthew Le God how to engage in reasonable conversation, and how to challenge my opinion, without making yourself look a bit silly.

You're absolutely right, it might still affect him... depends what it is, and clearly Clubcall won't know either - it may not even be a virus, it may be some other illness... I find these things often get reported under a blanket term which can be misleading.

Would they risk him? Again my gut says they might - and that Carroll himself would want to play - but we'll see.

That´s brilliant, can I borrow that one? :)

It won't effect his ability to fall over everytime the ball goes near him anyway.

Judging by their match thread on KUMB (in which they actually have a lot of respect for our recent form and results, and aren't at all 'arrogant fans' like so many of us apparently think they are), West Ham fans are fully expecting Lallana to fall over every time the ball goes near him, so we'll call it quits.

I agree with MLG and will be watch Sam Allardyce's pre match presser in full via West Ham player to see if he mentions when Carroll started feeling ill.

But will that be Sam's *medical* opinion? If not, it doesn't count.

To be fair, they have a point, Lallana's dive at Upton Park last year was embarrassing.

Yeah, 'twas not great - but the point is the same - we are both judging the other teams' players on the very little we've actually seen of them!

Have to say, Carroll's turn and volley goal last week was pretty impressive.

But then again, Noble dived for their penalty.

Which is in contrast to their rabid and vitriolic match thread earlier in the season - now Adkins who supposedly winds everyone up has gone, perhaps there's a bit more 'respect'. And, of course, we play football the right way. But no doubt their 'respect' is partly opportunistic. Fact is -once again- we're higher than them in the league, we're the top promoted team. And regardless whether they ultimately finish higher than us, the gap won't be as large as they were boldly and smugly claiming in October. So yeh, they've piped down. But if we were well below them in the relegation zone, no doubt, they would have been talking up this game more and relishing the opportunity to help send us down.

But then...... you'd really have to say Lallana's one-two with Jay Rod, followedby tucking away to score at Reading was also darned impressive......
