Summer 2013 HCDAJFU / Transfer thread

Belhanda would be a good signing for a top 4 side so fair play to Villa if they can get that one through.

The only way Villa will be able to afford it is if they sell a big asset, I.e. Benteke.

Lose quality to sign quality. I think.

Why wouldn't they be able to afford him?

Because Lerner is now stupidly tight with his money and they're doing some serious cost cutting to clean up the mess O'Neill, Houllier and McCleish left behind. Poor players for big fees on big wages.

Shows how poor a manager Kenny was as well, if I remember rightly (and ignoring all the massively inflated fees) Adam, Carroll, Downing and Henderson were very much in form for their respective clubs.

Kenny managed to get hold of them and in the space of 6 months all were used as perrenial jokes on social networks, such was their disasterous loss of form and overly expensive prices.

Yeh he must have agreed to those players, same with owners, they must have signed the cheques or given far too much autonomy to Camolli, none of them were terrible signings, just the massive prces that made them absurd.

Henderson and Downing have recovered a bit under Rodgers, in fact I think Liverpool fans quite like Henderson. Doni actually went AWOL, Bellamy was fairly average but at least he was a free. Coates has barely played, Adam was shifted of to Stoke and has become a bad signing for them. Even Enrique looks like he's going. A pretty bad list of signings.

Total cost on those transfers £92 million

OTOH, given Villa's struggle the past couple of seasons, Lerner would be foolish not to consider loosening the purse strings a bit this Summer and allow Lambert to bring in that little bit more quality they need to be comfortable next season.

But that's got nothing to do with them being able to afford such a player. Plus their income has now signigicantly increased.

Exactly that. Can possibly see Villa doing ok (comfortably lower midtable at least) next season.

If Villa get Belhanda that's a seriously good transfer. Could more likely see him going to Liverpool or Newcastle if he's talking to English clubs though.

Haven't actually heard of Khelifa, but I know a lot of English teams have been watching Evian recently, several of their players have been linked away.

Our 1st transfer will be announced Monday or Tuesday next week. Will arrive in Southampton on Saturday to sign contract.

so not a player retained for the confederations cup then which starts on the 15th in Brazil so not Astori, simple logic.Unless he's going to make a week-end stop-off between playing for Italy in Prague on Friday and leaving for Brazil on Sunday.

Might be unlikely, but certainly not impossible. If the deal is as good as done it'll be just a case of turning up for an hour for a few pics to go with the news release.

Edit: It actually makes it more like the player is going to the Confed cup, as why else would he be flying in on a Saturday to sign the contract etc if the deal itself won't be announced til next week.

True, but if the deal is already done then they could even have done the pics before but just not released them yet.

It does make me laugh seeing our fans like us with all these fanciful players yet dismiss villa, a historically bigger club than us, Chances of signing a similar profile player.

its more to do with the fact of them having the cash....or not.

I get the impression that they think villa do not spend money, which is of course incorrect

They spent 25m this season, 17m last and 30 odd the two seasons before that.

Them spunking 12m on belhanda is not outside the realms of possibility, they could pull it off, but they could be beaten to the punch by a bigger team. So basically similar to us.

Paul Lambert came out and said shortly after securing safety that they wouldn't be making any big signings in the summer, so it's not too unfair to rule them out of most transfers.

Well its going to be an interesting and exciting summer, I know it sounds daft but I still struggle to get my head around some of the names and numbers being bounded about as far as we are concerned. For too many years transfer windows were all about trying to cling onto our best players whilst signings were usually confined to a scandinavian with a makeweight and/or somone coming back from injury that was 'as good as a new signing'.

Really don't think we are at the stage where any new signing would be considered 'boring'

I agree, despite what a lot of our geniuses said on here they were no where near as bad as people made out. The problem was they had lots of young players and no real leader on the pitch, at times you could see the confidence sap out of them during matches. They'll be better for a season together and I'm sure Lambert will spend in the summer. He is a good manager and is doing a rebuilding job there and in sure they'll be better next season.

Is that because all young players improve, Turkish? Have you just fallen into the very trap you take great joy in using on others? ;)

Of course, its guarenteed provided they have the prerequiste of being hungry as well.

Nice attempt at taking two completely seperate points and making a sentance out of it though.

I agree with the sentiment, but when they were poor, they were really poor. Probably the worst team we played at St Mary's for me.

True, but remember we played them at home at the beginning of the season when Benteke hadn't really got going. Can imagine that we would be alot of other club's 'worst team that we have played at home' last season with our amateurish defensive performances early on. Villa improved a lot over the season and certainly didn't deserve to go down.

Indeed, and he'll have also been planning for Benteke to stay, so I imagine any spend like that would come from the money they make from him if he goes.

Again, people only remember their second half performance, they were okay first half and missed a good chance to go 2-0 up. Once we got on top of them they struggled and their confidence was gone, like i said, you could see it draining out of them in some games this season, our game included. The young side will have learnt a lot from this season and will be better for it, as will ours. I think we're a better side than they are though and I still believe both sides lack a real leader.

Davide Astori currently training with Italy squad ahead of qualifier on friday against Czech Republic. They then have friendly against Haiti on wednesday. So if he is in training in between the two games we can assume it is not him that is rumoured to be announced early next week.

The rumour is that he is flying in to sign contracts early next week. That could tie in with his travel requirements.

I think I said it mid season, when Villa were terrible they really were terrible, but it was IMO, like Turks said that they were inexperienced and in the middle of a relegation scrap. Lambert tried a few things out few the season but I think in the end realised Villas defensive frailties and decided that attack was the best defence. It could have gone either way but thankfully for them Wigan, Reading and QPR should no consistancy whatsoever.

Like us I would say Villa are a few signings from a solid mid table side, the young'uns there have got a bit of experience but need someone to keep their heads when it all goes wrong.

Plus he could do with keeping his better players. IMHO though, Benteke will go.

Oh, and like I said earlier, Villa have been reletive spenders in their recent history

But in their current state Villa are just one departure away from being a truly awful side. Villa=Benteke and 10 other blokes, especially with Weimann seemingly wanting away as well.

I thought the source was unsure of who the player actually was? Is it confirmed it is Astori now?

No.... I'm just thinking aloud in relation to jasoneuellfanclub's statement. I have no insider knowledge.

Yeah of course they are, but thats the way of football. Its a bit of a knife edge for them, like you say they are either a few wrong departures (and poor replacements) away from relegation fodder for another season

Or

A few decent signings and maybe keeping the right players away from mid table solidarity.

Will be interesting to see how good Lambert actually is (fwiw I think he is a good manager). I personally think this TW will be the highest spent ever for the PL. I can see all of the top 6-7 spunking some cash, I reckon we will be in the region of 30-35m, and the amount of managers changing (who always want new players) and more money around there could be fireworks

Of course this could be counter productive too

Would love to think it was him but although it is viable it seems unlikely to be him based on his international responsibilities over the next week. Think it could be someone based in La Liga that MP knows. I have no doubt if it is most posters will kick up a fuss that its an unknown despite MP's superior knowledge of the league.

Can't argue with that.
