Mr saint Posted 30 November, 2008 Share Posted 30 November, 2008 There have been so many annoying gits (not just Pompey fans....but people who support teams all over the country), going on about how good Pompey's support was against AC Milan. Wouldn't you just love to show the world in a televised match against the European Champions that we can be louder and better?! I dont care if that means we get some of our less regular supports of late coming along. They still pay, they help the club, the support the club, and they'll make us look good. A fan's a fan! eurosaint Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 St Mary's should be treated like a church (that is how it all started you know) ! The church welcomes allcomers, saints and sinners alike ! This is the chance for all of us to come together in a spirit of comradeship and faith for Jan and the team ! So let everyone get off their @rses, turn up, cheer on the lads and make it a day to remember, cos God knows we have had precious few of late !! (Ps. theyin Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 I was going to make every effort to get a ticket for this game. Plastic, fake, fairweather fan that I am but listening to the crap here about 'fickle' fans is crazy. Let me get right up their noses now. If you don't want the likes of me around you, and I certainly won't want the likes of you sneering at me as I take my place, then sod it, I'm having a word with my mate at Nike who sorts me out with tickets for games in London. It'll be a shame to sit with the corporate freebie types (not usually bothered with games up here as I'm not watching MY TEAM) but this fan snobbery is ridiculous. If the team is sh1te why should anyone continue with being continually let down. Fair play to the 'TRUE' supporters, if that's what they call themselves, but don't decry the rest of us who grew accustomed to 27 years in the top flight and all that that brought us and who are now, even after four years, still perplexed at the fixture list each season. The teams we play each week are those that would've been chomping at the bit to get a draw against us in the third round. It was their chance to be giant killers. Sadly we're amongst them now and I still can't get my head round it. Unfortunately (I hope I'm not sitting amongst a bunch of manu on the day) giant killing won't be the order of the day. 7-1 to the northern monkeys

Either you support Saints or you don't. Personally, I will watch my team play anyone from Salisbury to Barcelona but I go to watch MY team not the opposition. Like you I was raised on a diet of top flight football - but I didn't turn up to watch Dalgliesh, Hansen and Souness - I turned up to watch Moran, Wallace and Williams. I don't begrudge you a ticket by any stretch but I would urge you to deal with our plight and come down and watch us against the likes of Derby and Charlton - teams we used to pay to watch regularly in the Premiership. I really hope you see something in January that reminds you who you support and why. Frank's cousin Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 NOt sure I understand some people - I like many have bemoaned the shrinking attendances and challenged those 'staying away' to return for the good of the club. If this draw sees them coming back in droves and filling SMS to the roof with volume and passion - how exactly is this a bad thing? If we want to encourage those fans staying away to return, surely this is the best opportunity - a decent performance might actually help bring some back when they see what they are missing - For all the crap that has befallen us these last 4 years, for all the rhetoric about Lowe, Crouch, Wilde and Friday's latest takeover, surely what its all about is the football? An, nothing beats a full on home cup game as underdogs against the club we all love to hate - believe the last time we played them a division apart in the Cup we won 1-0 ;-) We might often all disagree, but we are ALL stuill fans and if this gives us an opportunity to show that unity and spirit, its fantastic One Saints, One fanbase - dont let the crap associated with the boardroom, divide us has been my mantra so lets not start with the bickering and encourage everyone to return and unite behind the team, if not the baord? Oh for the 76-86 period to return. I would dearly love to see some games in the flesh the more I read of this exciting play that gets reported but sadly on the evidence I've seen, ie 2 skytv matches, nothing has urged me to bang 50 notes in the petrol tank for the return journey and 30 quid for a ticket. Sorry though, maybe it is fickle of me but Derby & Charlton are hardly the pull I need to part with that sort of cash. They weren't even when we were in the PREM. Believe me, I'm willing our lads on (whomever they are) every Saturday. The heart still sinks when I hear of a loss or draw. They are MY team though. Just like they are the team of EVERYONE in Southampton....or at least they should be. Whether you choose to attend week in week out or not should not preclude people from being fans/supporters etc just because those supposedly more passionate/loyal deem the rest to be some sort of pond life. We have to be honest for a moment and stop being so judgemental - yes there will always be a group of fans who will watch pre season training against the Budist monks played on ice at 18000 ft in Nepal if it came to it, those whose lives are incomplete without a weekly or even biweekly fix of Saints, and good luck to them. There are others in the pyramid whose value for money threshold means the opposition and thus overall potential quality of the football does play apart - and as long as these folk are still genuinely suporting Saints and not secret Man U fans, again this is not a problem with me - afterall its also a finance/time issue for many. That is and will be the case whatever happens in the boardroom , or who is in charge. Excitment also generates more interest - the old ' I was there' - and not wanting to miss out when all about you everyone else is going - its the naturall pack mentality we share - it does make it alot easier to find an excuse notto go , when 10000 others are doing the same thing - and vice versa. So again, I believe ANYTHING that happens to the club that provides fans with an EXCUSE to return, even if it is in hope of seeing opposition stars, should be welcomed - afterall we need the cash ;-)

I know what you mean about Derby and Charlton but my point was we used to sell out to see Bolton and Blackburn when we would invariably lose or worse scrape a 0-0!!! Now it has been real entertaining stuff - albeit we have slipped up when on the box so you're not seeing the best of it. But this season, I have genuinely seen us play some of the best football since those heady days you and I remember! Don't get me wrong, I missed long periods myself for family, money, location reasons. But it would be a shame to turn up for a topping out ceremony and not have been there when the first sod was turned. I think in the long run as Saints, we only have the dark days to thank for knowing what the sunshine really feels like.
trousers Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 Probably already posted by someone else, but (stating the obvious alert)...isn't this tie a double edged sword IF we play very well on the day....? I can't think of a bigger shop window to put our good players in, and so early in the January transfer window to boot. So, in theory, a very good performance against Man Utd could damage our chances for the rest of the season. Perhaps....

So, in theory, a very good performance against Man Utd could damage our chances for the rest of the season. Perhaps.... Maybe, but if the players don't want to go (and Weston has stated that Lallana is in no hurry, and I have heard similar stuff about Surman) and the Club is in no hurry to let them go (as the windfall keeps the wolves from the door for a few months), then it can only be a good thing. Then maybe a good second half to the season might convince them not to leave in the summer, might increase attendances and season ticket sales which would in turn release the pressure from the banks in having to sell and so on. I hear what you're saying, but I think on balance I would have gone for this draw as it is a chance to kickstart the season.

Fair point, that could be a problem although spurs are already sniffing around lallana anyway, and surman has been around for a few years already so he's not an undiscovered gem that will suddenly be brought to light. Also Schneiderlin is supposedly on his way to arsenal. Of course, that wouldn't be a problem if all these 'fans' who suddenly decide to come to st marys now united are in town bothered to turn up to the odd championship game and we had decent gate receipts. Guys, you're going to have to let this one go at some point. Supporters come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and degrees of loyalty. Our hardcore fanbase is something like 13,000 to 15,000. No amount of pontificating or moaning on here will change that. That is about the limit of our fanbase when the chips are really down, period, end of, full stop. To get above that we have to start winning games at home, scoring goals, riding up the table, pull in good draws in the cup and/or get promoted. We have to do something to tap into that middle layer of support and get gates something like 20,000 to 25,000 on a regular basis. Then after that we have to do something to tap into that top layer (who are really discerning) and get gates up to 30,000. The reason we did that against Bolton et al, was simply because we had 20,000+ season tickets, a large membership, tickets had a scarcity value, people got in the habit and large crowds drew in larger walk ups. No amount of moaning on here will get the missing 5,000 10,000 15,000 back.

teamsaint Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 Just a couple of things. 1.brum are getting just over 15000 for some games. 2. all clubs get a drop of 25% on relegation, and further falls are certain if you perform as we have at home for the last 12 months. 3. be interesting to know what our receipts are, rather than the attndance figures. A lot of attendances in the CCC are boosted by cheap ticket offers or lower price STs. people will go to watch winning football, PL football, or cheap football. John Smith Posted 1 December, 2008 Share Posted 1 December, 2008 No matter who you are, or what your 'political' stance is on the club, there is no doubting that this is an early Christmas present for the the whole of what encompasses SFC. The financial repercussions will be welcome to the business, and the playing side can look forward to a mouthwatering tie that some of them have only ever dreamed about. I can imagine JP will find it difficult to keep some of the lads heads focussed for a short while, and those youngsters must be pinching themselves. Let's hope it spurs the squad on to all be fighting for a starting position over the Christmas period and get some good results. On the fan side, those fans that have been going week in week out have been handsomely rewarded for their loyalty, and although many fear a beating, I'm sure they are looking forward to the day and are excited about the occasion. In this season of good will and kindness to ALL men, isn't this a game where the fans bury the hatchet, get together as one, and on the day, regardless of the scoreline, sing the youngsters home for 90(+) minutes? I suggest that whatever your stance, on whatever subject, you put your prejudices aside for this one game and make the day a memorable one, regardless of the score. Let's face it, EVERYONE who has anything to do with the club, be they the Chairman, the manager, the players or the fans, could all do with this lift. Let's not ruin it for them.
