Southampton forward Gaston Ramirez is reportedly keen to leave the club in the summer, alerting Serie A side Inter.

The Nerazzurri are desperately short on strikers and see the 22-year-old as an excellent addition to their squad.

According to Calciomercato.com, the former Bologna star is fed up with the Premier League and the limited ambitions of the Saints, and wants a return to Serie A.

However, the price is thought to be a stumbling block for any deal as the English side paid €14 million for him just nine months ago.

Ramirez has made 22 appearances for Southampton this season in the Premier League, scoring on four occasions.

Is this the start of months of rumours linking him with a move away?! No quotes or anything specific, but wouldnt be surprised if clubs are interested.

There have been various little links referring to him returning back to Italy over the last month or so. Will be a struggle for any of them to cough up enough money.

Whilst I think he'll be great for us next season, I also wouldn't complain too much if we sold him for cost or profit, as long as we replace him correctly. If he's not happy here it would be silly to force him to stay. However if we can keep him, and all our best players, and add to them in the summer, we could have a cracking team next season IMO.

The original Italian article translates as follows:

He tried last summer, also will make an attempt in June. L ' Inter wants Gaston Ramirez , Uruguayan midfielder born in 1990, according to Southampton . After a season in the Premier League, with assets 4 goals in 22 games, the former Bologna was already fed up with the Premier League and the limited ambitions of the Saints , four points away from the hot zone of the league. The problem is, as always, price: € 14 million paid by the British, just nine months ago, Ramirez it costs as much. In the negotiations could be decisive will of the player who dreams of returning to Italy .

Worrying that they're seeming to be reporting that he wants to leave...

Yet obvious.

Former Serie A star at side who are only 12th in Premier League and not playing as much/being the focal point he would possibly like.......? :o

So he will leave to join Inter Milan?

I wouldn't be surprised either way.

I wouldn't want to be negotiating with Cortese though.

Says more to me that the reaction to this is ambivalent, rather then panicked.

When a player like Gaston Ramirez explains on signing that he joined us "because they offered me a lot of money", it's unsurprising to hear that he might not be settling as well as we hoped. Sadly I don't think I'd miss him as much as certain other players. He's hardly the first name on the squad sheet.

Well, despite the indifference on here I would be gutted if he left. Honestly believe he'll be a top, top player in a few years time. People saying we should let him go because he hasn't fulfilled his potential, or lived up to his promise...it's his first season and he's only just turned 22 for god sake.

He's been a disappointment. Yes he's been great on occasions but he's not been consistent.

The acid test is whether we are a lesser team without him. We aren't, as the Chelsea game proved.

If we could our money back I'd take it.

Does anyone know about his home life? Has his missus (assume he has one) come over with him? He was seen wondering around Southampton on his own [source protected] looking pssed off and bored and possibly a factor that not much to occupy him in this area. How he could be bored with West Quay beggars belief!

Never said that. Poor translation.

Gaston is a talented but young footballer. He will do brilliantly given time. All the doubters are entitled to do so given the stop start nature of his performances. But you all said the same about Spider-Man, boruc, Jrod, even Puncheon and you were all totally wrong. You will be totally wrong about Gaston too. He is a world class player. Probably the best we've got at SFC according to the players themselves and a magnet to help recruit other talents too. Patience patience patience. IF we have him bext season he will destroy teams.

When an experienced highly capped highly trophied international Professional like Neville says the toughest opponent he's faced all season was Gaston Ramirez it counts for something. A lot more than the short term knee jerk reaction to some of his performances to date.

In January Gaston did an interview with the OS. Said he'd just bought a house and had moved his family over here, was very happy here and enjoyed the relaxed life style. The people who make up these rumours obviously choose to ignore this, annoyingly.

Still worrying though that he only came here for the money, he may go on scripted interviews on the os saying he's happy but anyone can see by his body language and performances on the pitch his heart is elsewhere. Even if he wants to leave noone is going to pay anywhere near the fourteen million we would want back.

What a odd article - a 'lack of ambition' being the one accusation that could never be justifiably leveled at our egocentric Chairman.

As for Ramirez, so many on here seem convinced that he's on the verge of greatness I'd kinda like him to stay and we'll see if they're right or not. But if he really wants to back to Italy - as long as someone is prepared to pay - then in this era of unbridled 'player power' we might as well let him go.

This young man is by no means irreplaceable and our last result proves we are more than capable of turning over big teams without his assistance.

i have always thought he is a superstar in the making, he has practically everything you would want in a playmaker and could be as good as a kaka given time,

theres not many i would say that about, i think lack of fitness/run of games hasnt helped. but if you cant see that this boy is a bit special then i question your knowledge of football

Due to the huge transfer fee some fans clearly were expecting him to be as good as Ronaldo in his first season in the Premier League.

He's been disappointing at times and excellent at others. Would be a real shame if he went as he has shown he has a lot of real class and could be a big player for us next season. His performances against Villa, Newcastle and Liverpool at home were especially good.

The club won't want to sell him and huge majority of the fan base won't want him sold. So let's hope he stays and continues improving with us.

The £12m we paid is not a really big fee in comparison to the £80m for Ronaldo etc. However it is a massive fee for us especially as it was paid up front. It bought us a good player plus great potential for a 21 year old. The impediment for any club wanting to buy him, is the £12m minimum they will have to pay up front. It might be easy to link to him but without the ability/willingness to pay up front it's just not going to happen. As soon as a club takes that on board, only the seriously rich will pursue it.

Thought he was poor today at times. Slows play down, wants to do it all himself, and not the best in possession. It's clear he's got talent but his decision making isn't great

He needs time in possession to be at his best.

Could the premier league be too fast paced for him?

And today as well. We looked much more composed when he went off, as we have done on many occasions this season.

Like a few people have already said, I wouldn't be too disappointed to see him leave as long as we can at least break even on what we paid for him. He clearly does have talent but what good is that if he is only going to bother turning it on once in a while?

Poor, poor, poor, get him out.

Are you blind? He wasn't poor. Did you see the back heel and through ball? Jamie redknapp though he was class. The guy is blessed with quality and only a matter of time before it pays off big time.
