You think that's bad? I caught a bit of Footie Focus the other week and the presenter actually described him as "Irish"...! Can you believe that?

First off, Lawrenson is not a tosser, he's actually a very nice bloke. The way his predictions are done is that a BBC journo will phone him and have a chat with him. He doesn't actually write the column himself, although as it's under his name it obviously goes back to him for checking.

 

Secondly, the BBC and other media organisations employ people like Lawrenson to voice an opinion and be prepared to stick their necks out. There is nothing worse than a pundit who sits on the fence, like Alan Hansen and. indeed. our old boy Shearer. They say little and add nothing to the debate.

 

Likewise, Geoff Boycott at the Beeb. Again, you may not agree with his views, but at least he voices an opinion and this is the whole idea.

 

Any media organisation - but especially the BBC as it is publicly-funded - has to encourage interactivity with its audience. One way of doing that is to use pundits to spark a debate, which Lawro has patently done.

 

Those who moan about the BBC employing Lawro are missing the point. The fact that people are discussing Lawro's predictions is carrying out the function for which it is intended.

 

Rather than moan at Lawro, you should at least give him credit for being prepared to stick his neck out. It's no coincidence that he does the predictions.

 

Hansen didn't want to touch them with a barge pole as he knew doing the predictions could ***** the bubble of his highly self-regarded reputation.

 

Lawro is not so precious. He accepts that part of his role is to be shot at and that is partly what he is paid for.

 

And he doesn't have an axe to grind when it comes to Saints.

Martin Keown in the Daily Snail on Saturday is just as bad he has us down for a plucky defeat nearly every Saturday. Although the guest pundit who is a current playing professional is a bit more realistic for us, Jack Cork had a go a couple of weeks back.

Last Saturday Craig Bellamy had a go: Keown had us down for a 1-2 defeat Bellamy 1-3.

This Saturday should be interesting as our game is one of those you can't realistically call due to the all the luggage surrounding it: so I guess he will go with the draw.

I must say to me he comes across as a rather likable commentator and very probably good company to spend time with one suspects. As for him being a 'unfunny tosser' ... well you're obviously not one of those capable of appreciating the 'dry' sense of humour.

 

If he doesn't happen to rate us very highly, well that's a pity and I think he's wrong, but if that is his view then he's entitled to express it. I'm not one of those who are so very insecure that they feel the need to take a instant dislike to any and everyone who doesn't happen to share our love of this particular football club.

The Octupus was a Brit, if I recall correctly - not sure if he was from Lanchashire or if he claimed any Irish heritage though.......

Lose 15 in a row.. what a c ock! Lawrenson really is a grade a knob, never has or will give us any credit - a pundit is meant to have some idea of current form and base his opinion on it. Time the BBC ordered a taxi for this 'has been', time to bring in somebody who knows about football.

I would take a draw now.

 

Would you have taken a point at home to Chelsea, Liverpool and City? Have faith in the team - they have the ability to win any game.

Hardly insecure about his "dislike" for Saints as I've not even made a comment about that.

 

I just don't like seeing him on TV. The guy does "not" jokes in 2013. If that's me not being able to appreciate his brilliant dry sense of humour then I can live with that.

I don't think anyone takes pundit's predictions that seriously. I remember getting all hot under the collar at Rodney Marsh's comments about Saints, abut how we were there to make up the numbers and not that big a draw. That was until Saints got relegated and I found myself getting bored ****less watching the likes of Bolton, Wigan and West Brom and realised he was right but I was wearing my red and white specs..

The real point here is that he guy's predicted we'll lose 15 times in a row. That's not a vendetta, that's just ****ing incompetent.

He's a lazy pundit, gives the token garbage line about most clubs and predicts defeats for Saints because we're a promoted club and it's easier than research or thinking.

 

I don't think the words "Lawro...beloved...Lazy...toss...passion" are words that go together.

Nicely put, it's hard to believe that so many cannot see the objective of the prediction page. Besides if he was that good he'd be on the bookies hit list and living on his winnings!

No disrespect to Southampton but they are not that far from the lower end of the table and Reading aren't going to play many more teams like that. They need to start winning quickly. Southampton have done very well; they have beaten the top teams. They've struggled away from home but I think Southampton will go there and make sure they don't lose. Reading need to win and Southampton need not to lose. It is exactly the same as the QPR game and I am going to go for a draw here. I think Southampton have enough to get that draw.

Think this is fair comment to be honest. Whereas I would have been reasonably confident of an away win with McDermott still there, the Adkins factor and all the largely media generated baggage that comes with it makes it a difficult game to call and as such I'd be content with a draw.

They all hate us. They all hate us with a passion. All the pundits and all the commentators and all the football people on TV hate us, especially those who used to play for us and never mention us every time they are on TV. You know, I think i saw Lawro hiding in my shed with a "I H8 Saints" T shirt on last weekend and I'm convinced I saw Andy Townsend, sorry, Bellend (ha ha! cool, hey guys! Bellend hey!) in West Quay giving the Saints Store the middle finger once. Absolutely convinced it was him. F u c king slags. Dogs, the lot of them. Hate them all, cos they hate us.

The table on their site is so incredibly wrong has QPR on 51 but says he's only given them +13 its +28 by my count. Also saints are on 22 which they say is -6 when in reality its -12. The whole prediction thing is an absolute shambles

Agreed, Garth Crooks is starting to model himself on lawro as well, they both have a face like they have lost a twenty and found a fiver, and when and if they ever give us credit it is always through clenched teeth because the produce has told them to say it.

Perhaps it would be interesting next season for posters to also provide their prediction alongside those of Captain Moustache for comparison purposes.

 

I suggested this on one of the lawro threads from a few weeks back. No takers sadly...

 

Maybe this would be an interesting addition to a revamped predictions league?

To be honest it is not his result predictions that are irritating, its more that the predictions does not bear any resemblance to the comments about the game. Often he says positive things about a team and then predicts them to lose, or vice versa. Predicting correct scores (not results) is feandishly difficult, yo uonly need to look at the Prediction League this season. One person predicted the correct score 6 times, no-one predicted the correct score more than 4 times and most like me got it spot on once or twice at most. Correct result in the Prediction league was done at most 21 times, so somewhere around the same level as lawro at best. the fact is that Lawro has no more skill at this than any average person.
