norwaysaint Posted 4 April, 2013 Author Share Posted 4 April, 2013 Yes, believe it or not, I do find myself playing the "defend the Tory party" card on here more often than I do in the 'real world'. But that's only because of the blinkered agenda driven mentality of the average internet Tory basher. (not aimed at you sir!) My view of the Tories is that most of their ideas are sensible (i.e. it makes sense not to spend the equivalent of the entire income tax, council tax and business rates revenues on welfare and to somehow put the brakes on it) but their execution and implementation is often poorly thought through. All I wish for is rather than the internet bandwagon exclaiming: "look at those nasty Tories cutting this that and the other" that they instead acknowledge that all parties at the last general election pledged to cut public spending at rates that weren't a million miles apart. Yes, the Tories are a bit more ruthless at this streamlining malarkey than Labour but for the internet brigade to portray that we're only feeling the pinch because the Tories are in power is somewhat disingenuous. There's nothing wrong with all of this, but you don't show that you're aware that the right wing of politics indulge in equally childish and silly name calling. I think blinkered tory bashing is pathetic, but no more so than silly insults about lefties and tree hugging. No side comes out of the squabbles on here looking particularly clever. The use of the word "brigade" for example is probably the thing that makes me least likely to take a poster seriously. It's a childish attempt to lump everybody under a meaningless label and dismiss them. Neither side has ever managed to rise above name calling and mud-slinging, but most don't seem to consider it wrong when they do it. Anybody who thinks left is correct and right is wrong or vice versa isn't worth listening to, there's always going to be a need for both. That's why democratic governments always end up changing after too long with one side in power, the balance goes and people need change. By the way, needing a balance of left and right doesn't mean the same as supporting the middle ground.

Yes, you're right, I'm guilty of sometimes using the same type of inflammatory and "childish" language that I get bombarded with in Facebookland and the like. I guess its human nature to semi-consciously head down the "if you can't beat them join them" path in a debate scenario. At least it perhaps proves there's a modicum of human-esque behaviour somewhere in the depths of my murky mind... lifeintheslowlane Posted 4 April, 2013 Share Posted 4 April, 2013 Needless drivel. I'm classless because I don't care. The important question here is who funded this pointless exercise while there are far more productive and worthy causes out there. I think this will probably make make me a tree-hugging liberal. tpbury Posted 15 April, 2013 Share Posted 15 April, 2013 I came out 'Emergent', a year and a half ago would have been 'Elite'. That's divorce for you. Anyway, form is temporary, class is permanent!
