I don't see Adkins focussing on trying to keep them up this year at the exclusion of all else. It really would be a bit of a miracle. As a career move would you choose :

a) accept the inevitable, for which you won't be blamed in any way, and carry on building your reputation with a damned good go at promotion to the PL again next season, or

b) achieve the impossible, but then spend next season in another dogged fight against relegation

I would take a), and then move on after promotion, reputation suitably enhanced.

I think he will spend the rest of this season working out the strengths and weaknesses of his players, their fitness, ability to follow instructions, attitude, etc.

I think we'll see some experimentation, so don't know what to expect. It will be interesting, and I'm looking forward to it. I'm not too worried, and still feel that we owe them one.

Just saw this on the Reading forum...

We would easilly fill 35,000 if we had the stadium for it (probably not to watch our current crop of hoofers). We have to face humiliation over the next few weeks but I believe we will return in a few years and be in a much better position. In a bigger stadium with a team that is attractive to watch.

Something along the lines of 'there are other players in the squad I am using and he needs to work harder to get in the team.' More or less saying he's not good enough at the moment.
He must be really bad if MP would rather have no forwards on the bench than stick Mayuka in the squad.

From that quote it sounds more like he isn't putting any effort in, seems like he's not happy at how little playing time he's had this season.

I saw the interview/quote as well and it didn't seem to particularly focus on a lack of effort.

Wow. The long term plan is to recruit Messi, Ronaldo, van Persie and Shaw :) then, to really attract the remaining plastics who dont yet turn up to see whoever they are playing now

Lots of smiles in the training gallery...players seem to be really enjoying training by the looks of that.

Club propaganda to hide the fact that Cortese is pure evil.

Not sure it's needed so much. JRod can move up front if needed. So long as we have attacking players on the bench. Puncheon and Lallana or Ramirez could be on the bench, which is amazing really. Guly is still useful IMO from the bench. But next season you'd hope to have another striker who can offer a bit more goal threat from the bench.
Yes, I understand all that. But if you're a striker and not getting picked for the bench, when there isn't even another striker on there, you'd get the impression the manager doesn't rate you.

A number of the Reading fans don't feel that Nigel will be there for too long as they don't feel its the job he wants, merely the one he has. They think he would have preferred Leeds and is still totally gutted about what happened at Saints. Also doesn't help having an ethos of pass, pass, pass with a squad that can't.

Southampton right to sack Nigel Adkins - Kelvin Davis

Davis, 36, added that the arrival of Pochettino has resulted in a change of mentality and spirit at the club.

"We are in a state of mind where we can feel we can win every game at the moment and we will go there [Reading] to do that" he said.

Well, that's Adkins' team talk sorted tomorrow then....

Yeah that must really offend the Reading players that have a real love and affinity with Mr. Adkins, having played together for yonks...

So obviously a fake. A few points:

a) The game hasn't taken place yet, so there could not have a photoraph of the match in play.

b) Attcins was not wearing a blue tie when we played the Reading team last time around.

c) Non regulation ball. That ball has got some form of st elmos fire popping up around it, or at the very least fairy dust (neither are sanctioned by FIFA)

d) The playing surface must be grass, unless otherwise authorised by the respective Board of Directors or Management Committee, and must be of the highest possible standard. It must be level and free from surface depressions and excessive undulations. The maximum slope allowable shall not exceed an even gradient of vertical to horizontal 1:41 in any direction.

this looks far from the case here.

e) Those earlobes look a little small

So Reading, you may have hoped to convince us all that the match had already taken place, in order to claim the 3 points without a ball being kicked, but you have been foiled.

Nice try, but no cigar.

Sun Tzu - The Art of War:

If ever NA has the opportunity to know the enemy as you know yourself then tomorrow is his chance.

I doubt though that he has his army set up as he has too many square pegs in the Reading side to play his way.

what has happened to na's feet?

He used the Montauk chair to travel back to January 17th 2013 but it went wrong. Now he's only partly in this dimension :(

If you look closely, you can see parts of Dean Wilkins still fused to the technical area at St. Mary's :(

Must be watching Boruc and saying to himself, he's not at all dusty, wish I'd played him.

Looks like he is watching Boruc and someone else at the same time. I don't recall NA being cross-eyed when he was our manager.

I hope we stamp Nige's team into the ground and do a pee pee on their grave......And then give Nige a heart felt standing ovation and properly thank him for his part in our rise back to the land of the living.

Just put a quid on 4-1 & 35-1. Worth a pound surely !

I actually think that's pretty poor odds for a result like that (I assume you mean 1-4, by the way, not for Reading to win).

Just about to leave for the Madjeski.

I'm looking forward to a great sporting contest.

"There's only one Pochettino

and one Nigel Adkins

But Pochettino's our manager now!

We'll beat Reading!"

Then let hostilities commence.

One team will be relegated,

and it won't be Southampton.

I think it will be really close until the last 10 minutes when Adkins will take off their 3 best players and Saints will score twice. Then Cortese will lead a chorus of 'that's why we let you go' in the away end.
