Olallana Posted 1 April, 2013 Posted 1 April, 2013 Conditions were awful at Norwich but last minute pen aside we were still by far the better side imho Yep I meant that but those conditions make it a lot harder for that final pass or shot.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 1 April, 2013 Author Posted 1 April, 2013 Yep I meant that but those conditions make it a lot harder for that final pass or shot. True but thought we did really well despite he conditions.

Professor Posted 1 April, 2013 Posted 1 April, 2013 This game is set up for the Away Win of the season. Appreciate a lot of Saints' fans respected Nigel Adkins, especially for his loyalty to S****horpe when first offered the job at St Mary's. I was never one of them. He inherited a good team from Alan Pardew but I always felt he could have done more with it by winning a title instead of 2 second place promotions. If his repetitive post-match interviews were anything like the way he spoke to the players he will have struggled to add much to their self-motivation. If his strange selection policy and use of substitutes continues at Reading it can only be to our advantage. 5 goals away from home, not impossible.
SaintRobbie Posted 1 April, 2013 Posted 1 April, 2013 THE most important game of the season. Why? Nigel Adkins versus MP. Finally it will put to bed the 'who's the best' debaters. 3 points and we secure our position in the Premier League - 37 points should do it, 36 is everyone else's target to stay up. Reading have had their time. They need to go down and back to the leagues they deserve to be in IMHO. We need to bury this team and take back the North Hants supporters to expand our stadium and European challenge. We need to demonstrate we can beat the dross who'll hoof it forward, break and put our dodgy central defenders under pressure. We need to show we can beat the dross and the best. Most important game of the season. Pride, passion and destruction of the pretenders. Bring it on!

Berkshire Saint Posted 1 April, 2013 Posted 1 April, 2013 Not quite as confident as some are on here it seems. Surely we've been fans long enough to know we're a pretty good club to play against if you're woefully out of form...? This is the first game I'm missing since Arsenal away but hope to find a bar in Barcelona to watch it. Would be happy enough with a draw to be honest.
CB Fry Posted 1 April, 2013 Posted 1 April, 2013 THE most important game of the season. Why? Nigel Adkins versus MP. Finally it will put to bed the 'who's the best' debaters For one, I don't think the debate has ever been a "who is best" between the two of them. And for two, whatever the result, it wouldn't put that debate to bed anyway. MP was brought in to take us into Europe, not just be better than sh i tty old Nigel Adkins and to beat teams like stone-bottom Reading. Quite frankly Saturday should be like shooting fish in a barrell for a top ten team like us.
Lighthouse Posted 1 April, 2013 Posted 1 April, 2013 We did until that final bit and unfortunately Adam missed that sitter... I did wonder after that game if Lallana will be talked about in the same way people talk about Prutton missing a sitter at West Brom. Maybe he will be forgiven because he is a Saints youth player, or if we stay up it will just be brushed under the carpet. I agree with the general consensus though. We were much better than Norwich but we could never get that final ball in or get a decent shot away. Conditions didn't help but we really should have won that. If we had we'd be level with West Ham and Fulham in 10th and the pundits would probably have us in the 'pretty much safe' bracket too.

for_heaven's_Saint Posted 1 April, 2013 Posted 1 April, 2013 Under Adkins I'd have this down as a loss, just because it's Reading. Pochettino however won't give a sh*t who it is we're playing and I can imagine Nigel over compensating for our strengths in the way he sets Reading up whilst MP will just set us up to attack as normal. Quietly confident but would take a draw.
Elias Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 That Reading forum needs Turkish, it's a mongboard and a half. One Reading fan calling us scummers. Ok... I actually think the second team plastics might beat us, just be typical Saints.

I was listening to Football Weekly yesterday and was reminded of your good self when the podcast team started to discuss the relative merits of some of the teams closer to the bottom. It's odd, but it seems like there is nothing but respect for the way Southampton are playing at the moment. On Stoke - your model of a better football club than Saints, the general consensus is that no-one will miss them. Finally, poor Nigel has become something of a figure of fun since joining Reading. Linkage, although be careful - your ears might start to bleed at hearing the positive coverage. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/series/footballweekly
VectisSaint Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 THE most important game of the season. Why? Nigel Adkins versus MP. Finally it will put to bed the 'who's the best' debaters. LOL. Of course it won't. Who compared them anyway (where is this so-called debate)? How could anyone compare two managers based on a match between their current teams when one will be in charge of his second game, the other has been in charge for 3 months. Compare manager's abilities long term not on a single match.
Maggie May Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 It's going to be a hard game. All Reading need to do is park the bus and hit us on a lucky break. There is no point in them going all out for the win. Adkins won't want to lose.

They have to win 5 out of 7 at least so there are no no-win matches for them. They have to come looking for us and for a Pochettino side that's the equivalent of the famous Inspector Harry catch phrase "Go ahead, make my day".
pingwing Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 I disagree. Haha! I'll be watching it through someones front window...

Saint Garrett Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 @premierleague: Mike Jones has been appointed referee for Reading v Southampton on Saturday April 6th. #RDGSOU http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/archives/27818? The question is “who are the “good” refs for Southampton?” Who are the refs under whom they win more games than their average win percentage? Well we have Atkinson, Halsey and Probert. Those 3 refs are the ones that have the highest win percentage in Southampton games. And are there any refs who come close to the average 30% wins? Well we have Foy. And if I want to be generous I could also include Taylor. So that is only two refs who come close to the average. If you can add a few bits and pieces together this means that we have nine bad refs for Southampton. And with bad I mean that they don’t win or even come close to their average win percentage when those refs are around. The bad refs are Clattenburg, Dean, Marriner and Taylor. That is four. And I should find nine. Well that is because I would like to introduce a super bad category in this case. If you look at the results from Dowd it is really bad. But things can always get worse. Because we find 4 refs under whom Southampton might as well stay at home and give the points to the opposition. Those refs are Friend, Jones, Mason and Webb.
shurlock Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/archives/27818? Moreover, Reading have never lost when Jones has refereed one of their games (played 8 - won 2 - drawn 6). We've played 8, lost 6 and drawn 2 and yet to win under Jones.

Window Cleaner Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 Hopefully this will be noted, as will the need to redress the balance. tbh don't think he's reffed a Saints game at any time in the recent past, last couple of seasons that is.
FloatingbridgeSaint Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 I reckon Jayrod will want to show NA what he missed by placing out on the wing. He has spoken out a fair bit recently about thanking MP for the faith he has put in him & I suspect Jayrod will have a point to prove this weekend. I'm going for the away win but agree with previous comments that this has slippery banana written all over it.(both options covered there! lol)

Now you lay it on with a very large trowel.
Saint86 Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 You shouldn't let popularity denote whether something has any merit or not. "Let's Get Ready to Rhumble" is No1 tonight, FFS. Nigel will get all the credit he deserves for those promotions, probably more if prospective employers ignore the huge amount of money Southampton FC had at its disposal. He didn't achieve back to back promotions with S****horpe; got relegated the next year. If that's ignored too, he'll have an even better rep. I admire your bravery, VFTT. You must have some confidence in NA's abilities to keep heralding his inherent ability, especially as our next game offers a superficial glimpse of whether NC made the right call in binning NA. Yeah, yeah - I know that NA has less resources at Reading that he did when at SFC, but if we can ignore external factors when considering his success, then I think I'm justified in ignoring the shortcomings he has in his squad now. If he's half as canny as you ardent defenders make him out to be, surely he'll have a masterplan that plays on the weaknesses of his old boys? For this, and many other reasons, I await this game with interest. Bearing in mind that Nigel beat Reading 3-1, away from home, I am expecting at least 5-1 from poch as they are on worse form and we are on fire... anything else and NC made a cock up.....

pap Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 Bearing in mind that Nigel beat Reading 3-1, away from home, I am expecting at least 5-1 from poch as they are on worse form and we are on fire... anything else and NC made a cock up..... Last year we got a draw at their place. They mugged us at ours 1-3. We've got the 1-0 league win from this year. Was this a cup game?
Saint Garrett Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 JRod is still playing left wing, just players seem to have better movement under Poche. Seems to be loads of diagonal runs made, dragging defenders all over the place which therefore means that our players aren't staying in their positions as rigidly as under NA
Minsk Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 So, let's see which omens we have: Our former manager, harshly dismissed a few months ago, now in charge of the opposition = we will lose Playing a team with a new manager = (certainly historically) we will lose Team we are playing have lost their last 6 matches = we will be the team to change that, and will lose We have beaten Liverpool and Chelsea in our last games and now face the bottom team = (typical Saints) we will lose We have never won and Reading have never lost when the respective teams have been officiated by Saturday's ref = we will lose The last match I thought we would win comfortably (and desperately hoped we would) was QPR, and we all know how that ended = we will lose However: Reading have to win, a draw is no good for them; NA cannot set a team up to defend and hit on the break (see Liverpool away as an example); therefore they will need to attack us - and NA has not had anywhere near enough time there to get them playing the type of flowing football they would need to cause us sufficient problems. As we know, Saints play best in an open match. We have the better players; better form and need to change these ref stats. Therefore - we will win!!
Jack Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 Last year we got a draw at their place. They mugged us at ours 1-3. We've got the 1-0 league win from this year. Was this a cup game? He's imagining things. Maybe thinking of QPR away?

When he took over from AP, we were near the bottom of L1, yet 2nd place wasnt good enough. And we deserved to be Champions last season and would have been if it wasnt for Readings smash and grab at SMS. But I agree with you and believe we will win. For me this is 'Adkins team to be rebuilt' Vs 'Heres one I did earlier' Our players will know what NA will say to get his players going. We press them up the pitch and they wont be able to cope.
SNSUN Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 All fingers point to us winning but we are away and this is just the sort of game that Reading will be up for. Normally I'd worry about this game, but for some reason I trust Pochettino to get the lads to pull off a professional winning performance. A draw is no bad result either, an extra point towards safety and it would still mean little to Reading. Win this though, and surely we're as good as there. 37 points is what Twichmeister general thinks will be enough to keep QPR up. It won't be, and they won't get anywhere close to it either, but that would mean we only need 2 or 3 points until the rest of the season to maintain safety. I can see us beating West Ham the week after, so 6 points from these two games would mean a 4 game winning streak and would power us up the table. Exciting times, but I hope the lads don't get too carried away. Even now, safety is still our goal. Still, 1-3 to us on Saturday, even if it is live on Sky.
Griffo Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 Last year we got a draw at their place. They mugged us at ours 1-3. We've got the 1-0 league win from this year. Was this a cup game? We beat them 3-1 there in our Championship relegation season. Probably not what he's on about though.
CWD Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 Keep changing my mind on this one. One minute I'm convinced we'll lose, the next I can only see a big win. BUT I'm gonna be an optimist, we'll thrash them 4-0 and by 3pm on Saturday we'll all be wondering what we were worried about. I didn't realise this was a 1245 kick off though, which means I can't watch it. Text updates from a mate it is for me. Nightmare
Nexstar Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 We beat them 3-1 there in our Championship relegation season. Probably not what he's on about though. Wasn't that the 2-0 game? BWP at the double
bender Posted 2 April, 2013 Posted 2 April, 2013 Wasn't that the 2-0 game? BWP at the double Fairly sure we won 2 - 1 there during our nightmare season of 08/09.
Appy Posted 3 April, 2013 Posted 3 April, 2013 Fairly sure we won 2 - 1 there during our nightmare season of 08/09. Yeah 2-1.
DT Posted 3 April, 2013 Posted 3 April, 2013 Just read Echo balls about selection dilemma facing Mr P about goalie with Boruc fit again but Davis 'impressing'. No dilemma. Boruc is twice the keeper Davis is.
Bucks Saint Posted 3 April, 2013 Posted 3 April, 2013 Yeah 2-1. Skacel with goal line clearance too. Was one of those games. Prior to the match they had not lost at home for ages and we were awful.
austsaint Posted 3 April, 2013 Posted 3 April, 2013 Just read Echo balls about selection dilemma facing Mr P about goalie with Boruc fit again but Davis 'impressing'. No dilemma. Boruc is twice the keeper Davis is. I love what Kelvin has done for the Club, but if AB is fit and overlooked for KD I'll be both seriously worried and doubtful about MP's judgement in such a crucial game and stage of the season.
ottery st mary Posted 3 April, 2013 Posted 3 April, 2013 Couple of good saves by Kelvin......but Artur Boruc straight back in please...Top class GK.
stockbridge_saint Posted 3 April, 2013 Posted 3 April, 2013 So excited for this game. Having been the Zingarevich's private English tutor (for Anton's youngest brother) this game holds special interest for me. In fact one of the only major conversations I had with Boris (the Dad) was about Adkins just after he'd been sacked and I recommended him as a great manager. Funny old world.
