Starting to look at flights etc, and was wondering if anyone on here is going, or has toured there before?

Adelaide is the one i really have always wanted to do, but i'd have to change other plans if I was to do it, deciding wether it would be worth it..

Definitely hope to do a couple of days at Melbourne, i've been told getting tickets for isn't too hard. Then hopefully Sydney.

Mabye the Aussies' form might hopefully put a few off, and hopefully make it a bit easier getting tickets.

They are currently ripping the Adelaide Oval apart & redeveloping it. :(

Yeah real shame that, but I still think it's one of the better grounds to do, compared to say Brisbane.

Hoping to do Adelaide/Melbourne. Love the look of Perth mind, but pricey to get to and the city itself from what I've heard.

Anyone been before who has a rough idea on ticket prices?

Looking to head out 20th, do 3/4 days of the Melbourne test, quick hop across to Sydney for new year and back in time for work. Shame to have to fit it into 2 weeks but seriously contemplating it.

I'm all booked up for Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. I've done the Sydney test before and it's class.

Perth and Sydney will be a bit of a mad scramble for tickets and they usually sell out in hours. The MCG will only come close to selling out on Boxing Day and tickets will be easy enough to get. Hopefully they're still doing the 5 day passes this year.

All 5 days for each? Would love to be doing Perth. Have you got any idea of what ticket prices are like? I haven't got a clue.

Believe they normally do a 5 day pass so will just get that. May miss the odd day here and there but I've been to Sydney a few times and also done Melbourne before, so there are no actual sights left for me to see. Just cricket, booze and the beach.

To be fair, it needed it. The hill will remain as will the scoreboard. They redeveloped the main members stand a few years back which I thought they did tastefully, keeping some of the old wall structure, and now it's the turn of the Donald Brandman and Chappell stands.

There's no guarantee they'll be finished in time for the ashes as the greedy f***ers working on the site want a 25% pay increase over 3 years and the unions are threatening to strike over it......over 8% pay increase per year FFS!.

Believe me the new stands will look good and will be a lot better than the ridiculous Chappell stand with the stupid tent roof.

Went to the test for the 2010 ashes on the Saturday (was a stinking 39'C) & had a great day watching Cook, Peitersen & Trott dominate all day!

Orange (or anyone else for that matter), I live in South Australia, so if you have any questions about Adelaide, feel to PM me.

Don't suppose you can recommend any decent car rentals? We're flying from Perth to Adelaide, then taking a few days to drive down to Melbourne (leaving the car there). Also, any towns you recommend to stop at on the way? Will go through the Grampians, then down and along the Great Ocean Rd.

Don't know of any particular car rental companies that are different from the others but the regular ones will be Budget, Europcar, Avis, Hertz etc. For camping type rentals there's Maui, Britz, Apollo or Kea are the main ones.

Recommended places to visit en-route to Melbourne are:

SA

McLaren Vale (Wine Region)

Victor Harbour to Goolwa (South coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula and takes in Port Elliot & Middleton)

Coorong National Park

Robe (beautiful coastal get-away town)

Naracoorte (just a regular country town but is just north of the Coonawarra wine region and has historic caves to visit)

Penola (not much in the town itself but is in the Coonawarra wine region)

VIC

Warnambool (recommended as a stop, not because there's anything worth seeing there but it's a big enough town to have all the facilities you need and it's at the beginning of the Great Ocean Rd)

Apollo Bay (worth stopping there)

Wye Beach Hotel (this pub is worth a stop for lunch/dinner and a drink!)

Lorne (also worth stopping there although it's only 1 hour from Apollo Bay)

What you can/cant do will depend on how many days you intend to take doing the trip. Don't be fooled by how close it all looks on a map - if you want to take in the Grampians and the GORd you'll spend about 14/15 hours of driving time I reckon.

Hope this helps!

Cheers.

Thanks a lot for that. Some good suggestions there and Robe looks a beautiful town so that will be the first night's stop sorted. We leave Adelaide on the 19th and don't need to be in Melbourne until Christmas Eve so have a bit of time to play around with.

I've travelled Australia before, I did; Sydney - Cairns - Alice Springs - Adelaide - Melbourne - Sydney all overland, so aware of the ridiculous distances involved.

Cheers for your help.

I did Melbourne and Sydney in 06/07 Ashes. Despite having already lost the ashes by the time I got out there it was a quality trip. Melbourne and Sydney both brilliant cities. Stayed in Hostels, book up as early as possible (esp Sydney for NYE). Tickets I found easy enough to get off touts for face value, esp at the MCG (even on boxing day). Sydney was tough on the last day and had to go in the home end, this isn't a problem though.

Be prepared to see how 50 years of terrace evolution makes the Barmy Army completely outwit the Aussies (or "Boony army" as they were back then), basically their songs consisted of "foour nilll, foour nilll" at the MCG and "fiiiive nillll, fiiiive nillll" at the SCG.

Some great characters that travel out there, loads of football lads although some of the Barmy Army "full timers" annoyed me with their self entitlement, god knows what "Jimmy" will be calling himself now - could be a lynching if he starts the old cigar chomping "now then now what we need is a Barmy Army wicket, Can Jim Fit It?"!

Watch out for the weak lagars in the grounds, jeez, the exchange rate is pretty scary, back when we went we were waving $ notes at the Aussies singing "we've got 3 dollars, to the pound". Won't be much of that this year!

Enjoy, I'm still planning on doing a full tour, Perth Brisbane and Adelaide have to be visited whilst I'm still young enough...

Oh, don't forget to take a St Georges flag with SOUTHAMPTON FC on it. Up the Saints!

Here's a pic of the proposed redeveloped statium.

Adelaide_oval_brochure_large.jpg

There'll be a pedestrian footbridge for easier access across the Torrens river from the Station & Casino straight to the back of the Donald Bradman (South) stand.

Glad to see the hill will still be there.

Will drop you a PM, thanks.
