Lambert Signs Contract Extension

Jack Cork signed for us in July 2011 on a 4 year deal until June 2015, but that was as a Championship club. Perhaps he'll sign a new deal soon or maybe wait until next summer? Might depend on clauses in his current deal.

With two years left I would say things are in hand.

Having our only immediately Premier League standard keeper able to leave on a free in 3 months time is a little more pressing for me.

It is, unless you have a copy of his payslip.

And he pretty much said when he signed.

Ramirez told Corriere Dello Sport: "They believe in me in every way... and above all I have said that they are going to grow. Southampton is a newly promoted team in the English top flight, but they have the means to stand tall in a few years. And with me they are going to build. It's all very stimulating. Even if it is a little strange."

The 21-year-old scored eight goals in 28 apperances in Serie A last season and revealed that he was offered a deal that was too hard to refuse.

"The truth? I think so, yes, this time," he said when asked if he was about to leave. "Bologna have reached an economic agreement with Southampton. There are only a few details to sort out, but they have found the agreement in principle, and the English club have reached an agreement with me.

"It is an offer that you cannot refuse. They will give me so much money (€2 million net per year and more than €1 million signing-on fee)."

Someone told me a crazy rumour Gaston was on 60k or so... Not sure how many players I want on that salary :uhoh: Was always going to be a danger when we signed a marquee player on two to three times what everyone else was earning.

It's more than that.

According to the man himself, its 2M euros per year, net. Which converting to £ Sterling and accounting for tax and employee's NI is around 4M euros. Add in employer's NI and its very close to £80K per week.

Here we go!! Why do we need to go off topic instead of relishing the fact that Ricky Lambert has committed himself to Southampton Football Club because he loves being here. :(

I'm not saying it isn't true, I think he probably is on that kind of money. Just it is still a rumour as we don't actually have anything concrete as to what his wage is.

The man said himself when he joined he was on 2m euros a year NET, plus a 1m Euro signing on fee. His 2m Euro a year salary works out about £68k a week.

He loves an All Saints top. Now he's on a bit more cash maybe he can afford to buy some decent gear.

You should see the shop assistants in All Saints Spitalfields tonight. If I wasn't so drunk and they weren't shop assistants I would marry them.

PS - 40k a week, it kinda makes you a bit sick eh? Thats like twice a years wage.. Hmm better not think about it too much .. *sinking feeling in stomarch*

But after football what does he do? Doubt he will make a TV pundit - very few of those. So work will be difficult. He should live a minimum 50 more years - so his 3 year contract will get him a pension of about £60,000 a year for his life. Which is fantastic by the way but not a huge amount for someone who is near the top of his profession.

Exactly, good point well made.

What do people expect him to do in " the Football after-life " ?....go back to being a packer in the beetroot factory?

Get Cork and Boruc sorted out and Shaw signed in July and we have the makings of a top 10 side. We have a lot of young, very good down to earth players who appear to be happy to learn and improve and most importantly turn out for the Saints, work their nuts off without any delusions of playing for Real Madrid.

"It is understood that Town's new board are concerned over his possible resale value at the end of his contract when he would be 30 years old."

Best million quid we've ever spent. A gamble, perhaps, but one we were financially more willing to take. And boy has it paid off. I doubt we'll ever get such a return from a £1million transfer again, surely?

RLGM legend.

Sit on his arse and count the interest. Even £40k a week for a year is about £2m. You don't need to play at the top level for long to live off it if you're even remotely sensible with it.

FWIW I was hoping we'd be signing a top 10-standard striker in the summer and this makes that slightly less likely. Ramirez needs to have someone to pass to -though Rodriguez is starting to step up as hoped.

Though it's not unprecedented for Cortese to sign people to new deals and never use them, it often seems to have been his way of softening the blow of "you're dropped". Could also be a contractual performance-related incentive based on an appearance or scoring clause, as we're big on those with numerous promotion clauses having kicked in over the last couple of seasons for others. It could also just be a way of keeping other clubs away from him in the short term, or even just leveraging a larger transfer fee if the plan is to sell.

He was already under contract until aged 32(and a half) and mid-2014, so to me it seems to be a short-term incentive to get Lambert to stay for the next year, as his effectiveness and fitness is likely to wane in the next couple of seasons and certainly will in the period the contract extension is for.

I'm not really sure that's particularly beneficial and you could certainly make the same case for Le Tissier, so I think that's pretty much irrelevant.
