Why no closed door game line up?

I just read that Pochettino has drafted in the Developement Squad for Training Sessions during the International break. Doesn't hold too well for the next match.

This had me recalling how Strachan in his first season used the international break and arranged a closed door game against Charlton, whom I believe were also in the Premiership at the time. Another time I remember we played Le Havre in the break.

Surely, even now, the Stooge in the Boardroom could use his contacts the game, to fix up a match, say, next Monday or Tuesday, against one of the promotion pushing Championship teams. I could believe there would be clubs very willing to put their players up against a Saints XI. Failing this I can't see the likes of De Ridder being much cop and then getting a place in the team against Chelsea.

Not sure why you would think that. Using that logic Chelsea (who have nearly their entire first team squad on international duty) won't too well in their next match (against us) as well.

No harm in the development squad training with the first team. Many of them get drafted in when we have injuries anyway, and it is standard to always have at least one of them training with the first team as a part of their development.

Plus at this time of year thoughts are turning towards scholars getting contracts, and those who have contracts either being promoted to the first team squad or staying where they are so the club and Pochettino will get an awful lot out of it too.

The Stooge in the boardroom?

Why risk injuries in a pointless game when you only have 8 games to go and half the team on Intl duty?

Its not like the Dev Squad players are suddenly going to play vs Chelsea, they are just making up the numbers so that training can happen effectively, and it gives MP a good chance to see them in the first team environment.

Think you have completely misunderstood. MP has drafted the fringe players/u21s (we don't have a development squad, that was last year) in so that there are enough players on the training ground to carry out match simulations when so many of our players are on international duty (or would have been if they had not withdrawn due to mysteriious injuries). It actually bodes well for the next game that the remaining players are not getting an easy time while the internationals are away. Playing closed door friendlies with 8 games to go with the risk of crucial injuries would be crazy in my opinion.

If he's still here Pochettino will have plenty of time in the summer and pre-season.

So your whole argument is that its better to play a match then to train a bit extra during the week?

I can see certain advantages with having a match but surely this late in the season a bit of rest can also be a good thing? Plus, a match caries a larger risk of injury then training and it gives Pochettino a chance to have good look at some of the youth players.
