Owen retiring

A player who never achieved his true potential. He should have been a consistent world beater, instead his destiny was to succumb to the privilege lifestyle as his talent and fitness waned. Quite symptomatic of the supposed 'golden generation' of English talent he was meant to be a key player for.

How is it "quite symptomatic of the supposed 'golden generation' of English talent"?

In that they didn't reach their potential and believed their own hype. For some individually, and the England side of 2002-2006 collectively as a unit.

Its fair to say that in his prime Owen did fullfill his potential and was one of the best strikers in the world. 40 goals in 89 appearances for England and the only English player to score in 4 tournements. Unfortunatly for him in 2005 injuries took their toll on him and he was never the same player as he was at Liverpool.

He should have been one of the undisputed best in the world. After failing to establish himself at Real Madrid it was all downhill, despite his excellent goals to game ratio. I cannot help but feel he could and should have achieved even more.

He was definitely up there. Think of the other strikers around at the time. Ronaldo, Batistuta, Raul, Van Nisterlroy, Shevchenko to name a few. to be the undisputed best you're taking about being better than some real greats. He probably could have achieved more but he was at the wrong club, if he'd been at Man United, Arsenal or even Chelsea in his prime it'd been a different story. By the time he want to Real he was starting to dip. In his prime c2000 he was a quality player who could have got into most teams in the world.

Not sure how the European Player of the Year could have achieved more.

Such a pity he was essentially done by his mid twenties, imagine if he could have continued to stay fit. He should have achieved more even if it was a repetition in some areas.

So his "failure" was to do with injury and not ability and his "failure" resulted in FAC medals, UEFA cup, La Liga medal and European Player of the Year.

Didn't reach their potential? Lampard, Gerrard, Cole, Scholes, Ferdinand etc, how have they succumbed to the privileged lifestyle as their talent waned? They've had amazing careers. Didn't quite work for the international team, but that's not unique to this set of players and has more to do with management, tactics etc.

Was great in his prime, one of my favorite players back in the day. I actually feel that at one stage, albeit a short period, he was the best striker in Europe and a proper ''world class'' English player, which is so few and far between these days to be honest.

Owen >>>>>> Sturridge....Wellbeck.....say no more.

It will be odd not having him around. But when you used to be the best English striker & now can't get a game at Stoke, it's time.

I agree. In reality it was probably time when he was little more than a time wasting sub at Man U.
