mitch01 Posted 25 March, 2013 Posted 25 March, 2013 Christ, this means I might actually have to come to like Reading now (once they are nice and relegated, of course.)
Saint86 Posted 25 March, 2013 Posted 25 March, 2013 So we all know that the royals fans are actually arsenal/chelsea fans in disguise. Now we all know that if Adkins goes there, reading will pick up a few Saints fans "with and interest in their club" So, does that make us as big as Arsenal and Chelsea??
Pamplemousse Posted 25 March, 2013 Posted 25 March, 2013 Press conference at 9.15am tomorrow morning. Will be confirmed then.
Hedgehog Posted 25 March, 2013 Posted 25 March, 2013 What's Cortesse done, should have given him a bigger garden to work on! Will not make any difference to our game against them, Adkins may know our players, but the same could be said about most managers when it comes to playing the likes of Manure. If our players are better than theirs (which they are) then it makes no odds (I hope).
Saint J 77 Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Good luck to Atkins. At least he's guaranteed three points against Saints. I hope we are both wrong but I agree, I think that is guaranteed now Karma for Cortese.
SW11_Saint Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Good luck to him, I wish him all the best and Reading have got themselves a great manager. Clearly not wanting them to survive as it'll likely mean us dropping but I hope they run away with the Championship next season. I look forward to giving him a warm reception when he does return to SMS. Great manager and great bloke.
Jack Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Look forward to hearing NA lie through his teeth in the presser - "fantastic football club, belongs in the premier league, amazing loyal fanbase....etc". FFS, what a shame for Nigel.
Kingsland Red Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 That's them back up next season, then. This , and why NC must be very confident in MP. - To have sacked our rebound gurentee before we were mid table, four promotions in five seasons. Top man.
ToreSF Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Look forward to hearing NA lie through his teeth in the presser - "fantastic football club, belongs in the premier league, amazing loyal fanbase....etc". FFS, what a shame for Nigel. Why? Reading will go down this season, but they will also be firm favorites to go back up again on first attempt. Probably Nigels best shot at managing in the PL within two years.
Saint Garrett Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Look forward to hearing NA lie through his teeth in the presser - "fantastic football club, belongs in the premier league, amazing loyal fanbase....etc". Ha I was thinking this. "They have some wonderful fans here at this huge football club" "I've inherited a superb group of hard working professionals all pulling in the same direction"
Lord Duckhunter Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 That's them back up next season, then. Runners up , had they stuck with cue ball head they'd win it again.
Jack Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Why? Reading will go down this season, but they will also be firm favorites to go back up again on first attempt. Probably Nigels best shot at managing in the PL within two years. Because they're not a fantastic football club, they don't belong in the PL, they don't have a fantastic, loyal set of fans. As a whole, their support is plastic to the core. Reading is their 'second team' but as they're in the Prem they'll sell some tickets. Much cheaper and more convenient than a trip to the Emirates or Stamford bridge. No real history or passion there, and although he'll have some resources, it's sad that NA isn't going to a club where the fans share his passion for it.
Minsk Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 That is fair enough, but as many have pointed out time and time again, we did have a lot of resources. This is one of those "time will tell" situations. Arguably, West Ham and Leicester had far more resources last season - yet we finished above both! As you say, time will tell.
shirleysfc Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Lolz at those Saints fans who are now supporting Reading because Adkins is their manager (ffs) and those who think he'll turn them into Man Utd in 3 days...

Don't think he'll give a **** about that, to be honest.
JRM Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 that's annoying as I dislike Reading , but good luck to Adkins he is a top bloke and I'm sure our fans will give him a good reception at the Madjeski in a couple of weeks. surely he'll lose his first game away at Arsenal on Saturday !
sotonjoe Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Will he use the bus or rowing metaphor in the press conference? I can't stand the tension!
Jack Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Don't think he'll give a **** about that, to be honest. I agree, but I still think it's a shame he's not going somewhere better. And someone we don't have to play in a couple of weeks.
Leicestersaint Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Good luck to Nigel (but not against us when I will be there rooting foir Saints)!
Turkish Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Because they're not a fantastic football club, they don't belong in the PL, they don't have a fantastic, loyal set of fans. Prepare to be shot down by MLG, Frank Cousin and co. They have only tapped into their catchment area to grow their attendances due to their success and people living in their catchment area wanting to watch premier league football. They are the model club which these people believe we should follow.
trousers Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 @ReadingFC: Adkins will take training at Hogwood Park for the first time today, along with our new assistant manager Andy Crosby. http://t.co/YNDr3YoVZp
Colinjb Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Press conference live now. Can you keep Reading up Nigel? "We have to believe, I want Reading to be in the Premier League." He is now thanking the Saints fans for our support in his time with us.
jampot Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Adkins prior to any questions at press conference makes a point to thank players and fans of Southampton fc for support..
MOSaint Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Zingarevich came across as evasive when asked about transfer budgets both future and past.
niceandfriendly Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 The Reading chairman came out of those questions very badly indeed! Very amateurish. Brilliant job by SSN cutting away from the presser early after only one or two questions from Nigel.
ToreSF Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Great gesture by Adkins to thank players and fans at Southampton. Makes the club not thanking him look even worse.

Bucks Saint Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Great gesture by Adkins to thank players and fans at Southampton. Makes the club not thanking him look even worse. Spot on
pangy Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 As much as I like Adkins,I cant see him having any impact at Reading,he looked out of his depth here at times with arguably a much better squad, not sure what he can offer Reading,I assume they are preparing/anticipating relegation and are looking to next season
LostBoys Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 I wish him well but I find it a surprising choice apart from the obvious lack of a requirement to move his family etc. My Reading business colleagues feel the problem is Zingarevitch promised Mcdermott funds to strengthen the squad if they got promoted but then did not deliver. Looking at the posts on here he is not committing now either.

Cabrone Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Good decision by NA but a funny one from Reading. Good for NA because he's not under huge pressure to stay up, the expectation is that Reading will probably go down so he's got a chance to be a hero without much downside. Strange for Reading though as they already had a manager with the same credentials as NA who would have had a very good chance of getting them back up anyway. I wish NA the best of luck, just not for the remainder of this season
paris Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 I wish him the best of luck , should still be our manager .............
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 There were funds according to the owner, McDermott didn't put them to use. I can't imagine Pogrebnyak (sp) came cheap, wage wise.
trousers Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 @NabilHassan79: Fair play to Zingarevich for fronting up to the media at Adkins' presser unlike Nicola Cortese who bottled it at Pochettino's. #readingfc How does he know that Cortese "bottled it" rather than decided against attending so that the focus would be on the new man rather than what happened with Adkins?
Professor Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Not looking forward to Reading away now. Come off it! Reading away has to be a fantastic game with Saints even more fired up to win all three points. Pochettino has also inherited a better team than Adkins has.
bpsaint Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Touch of class as usual from the guy for thanking us fans and players for the support. Aside from when he plays us of course I wish him all the best at Reading.

Exactly. Would he have shown up if it was on the same day as him sacking McDermott?
FloridaMarlin Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 It's become standard football behaviour to mouth platitudes at former clubs and the opposition, borne out of the fear that any adverse comments could be used against you as a motivational tool. When Joe Royle was Oldham manager he claimed after one win that he didn't need to give a rousing pre-match team talk, all he did was pin the opposition manager's dismissive programme notes on the dressing room door. Perhaps a bit of journalistic licence from Joe, but that sort of thing has now spawned pointless anodyne pre-match drivel, where a manager will always say the opposition are a good side and he expects a tough game, even if it a Premier Leage team playing a Conference outit in the FA Cup. Even last week you had Roy Hodgson saying that he expected a tough battle against San Marino and they would be treated with the utmost respect. Whatever happened to managers saying; "We should trounce this shower and if we don't, I will eat my tracksuit." So, naturally, with Saints coming up, Adkins will say nice things about the club and its supporters, so that Saints fans travelling to Reading will not turn it into a seething pit of hate. And I'm not sure I buy into all this; "Adkins' appointment means it's a nailed-on three points for Reading." It's only Adkins with an axe to grind against Saints, not the Reading players and it will be a test of his motivational skills to relay that to the players. Plus, if Saints players were as disaffected with Adkins as we are led to believe, surely they will want to put one over on him and prove the club was right to get rid of him?
pangy Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Top bloke,Crap tactician imo We will stuff Reading 3-0
Seaford Saint Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 Media trying to make a story shocker.... It is a story to be honest, not much looking required. I really hope he does well there and I think he will. Will we regret sacking Adkins I think we will in time. I can't stop supporting my club but I would say European footie is not a priority for me. A football club that I can feel part of and relate to, comes first and foremost and sacking Adkins, bringing in Poch and then talking about stadium expansion European footie worries me. A club that respects its fans...well I think that might have gone too. We'll see. Touble is I think the same may be true at Reading as well.
trousers Posted 26 March, 2013 Posted 26 March, 2013 (edited) Exhibit A as to why you don't have owners/chairmen at press conferences for new managers.... http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11673/8598809/New-Reading-boss-Nigel-Adkins-wants-to-move-on-from-Southampton Edited 26 March, 2013 by trousers
