Dan83 Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Anyone have any idea why Punch is suddenly out of the picture? Even Guly appears to have jumped above him in the queue of late.
pangy Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 I did wonder this as well, but after hearing MP say that he tweeked the formation so Lambert and J-rod can push on/swap it really only leaves one place out wide, and with AL coming back into a bit of form I would have him over Punch all day . SaintNeil90 Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Other players have been in better form, simple. Guly is a different kind of player, much more defensive than Puncheon, which is why he is more likely to come on towards then end of a game. My interpretation too. Time for him to step out of the limelight and knuckle down in training to force the manager's hand.
SNSUN Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 JRod, Ramirez and Lallana are currently the preferred trio - I think it's as simple as that. Guly cam on the other day but I think that was more to do with his height if anything. Puncheon still has a big role to play for us, but even my preferred 3 would be JRod, Ramirez and Adam. No disrespect to Puncheon, who has been excellent this season - but Adam is back from injury now and is playing well, Rodriguez is on form and Ramirez is hard to drop because of his price tag and potential quality. If anything it's good to have the competition for places, and Mayuka isn't even getting a look in.

Yep, this is it. We are playing differently, RL floats over to the right, JR moves into the space in the middle, GR drops back to supply the balls in and MS makes late runs to get onto the knock downs. It seems to be working so Punch will have to wait for a bit.
Saint_John Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 I think always has problems when there is a change in systems. When he first arrived under AP he was good playing a "fixed 4-4-2" system. He knew his role on the right wing and played it well. When Nige first arrived he was very much into changing system during games i.e. changing to a "diamond" etc and I felt he didn't understand what his role was in that system. There was that shocking performance at leeds last year where Nige asked him to do a certain job on the left hand and he didn't have a clue and was taken off at h/t. This season Nige changed to a 4-2-3-1 system this year I think he was "at home again" playing the wide on the right role of the 3 attacking midfield players because they generally kept fixed positions. Poch has now come in and the system has changed again in that the 3 are always interchanging i.e. on Sat sometimes Adam was on the right, sometimes Gaston was out there, sometimes J-Rod. The players are always changing positions and "pressing the opposition" and I think Punch has difficultly with that. He will get there eventually imo he just needs more time on the training ground to understand the role expected.
fish fingers Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Puncheon should be in ahead of Lallana.
saints-cris Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 J-Rod is playing really well, Lallana is probably rated better than Punch and Ramirez plays behind. We have good options, he just signed a new deal. Its all good.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Puncheon should be in ahead of Lallana. Really? Punch's last few performances really have not been up to much. Lallana was brilliant on Saturday, probably should have scored, but caused so many problems. I think JP has been in good form for spells of this season, but I do honestly think he still flatters to deceive. For all his running, he is pretty one-dimensional, and a bit of a one-trick pony. Loses the ball so often it is infuriating.

Professor Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Pochettino did say (in Spanish) that he'd play 23 if he wasn't restricted to 11. JP is currently behind Ramirez in the pecking order and plays a different game to Guly. If we had been chasing the game on Saturday, JP might have come on to add more up front but at 3-1 up Guly for Lallana made sense.

Scored some important goals for us this year but he's not as good as Lallana, Ramirez or Jay Rod at the moment.
ART Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 I believe he's being lined up for Plan B against some of the teams we're up against. Too much exposure was resulting in him not playing as well although recent substitution aren't very imaginative.
ottery st mary Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Puncheon has been playing very well ..regardless of what some posters suggest. The coach has gone with Jay Rod , Lallana and Ramirez recently....correctly as it turns out. But FFS ..to suggest that Punch has not been playing well..gives the ball away more than an other or is not consistent......FFS:rolleyes: He is a very good footballer and will be used during the run in...as the coach decides. Punch has been very good for the Saints and will continue to do so.. Opinions:scared: He is a tremendous player and is our player. COYS

Fair enough mate, football and forums are all about opinions, yours is more than valid, even if I am inclined to disagree.. I do honestly think in his last couple of appearances, he has been below of the high standards he has set at times this season. I think MP seems to prefer JRod to JP, though he does also seem to like to shuffle the pack. Personally, I think our best '3' off the striker are Jrod, Lallana & Gaston. Though I am also a staunch believer in playing a team that suits the game, so certainly still see the use of having JP in the squad.

KelvinsRightGlove Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Personally i think Puncheon has been a more effective player this season. Fair enough pal. There may well be merit in that. As I said, I think right now, his form is below that of JRod & Lallana. Not an awful scenario to be in though really, Jrod Lallana Gaston starting, with Davis/Punch to choose from. Not bad for a squad with no depth
pangy Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 I think that with Gaston and Lallana you have more chance of creating something out of nothing and they are more than capable of splitting a defence with a single pass as we saw on saturday. Roger Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 I think punch has been better than all the other three marginally this season, especially Lallana. Adam played well sat but one swallow doesn't make a summer and he can't shoot.
