spyinthesky Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Usual good condition Watching MOTD and FL show over the weekend revealed how bad some playing surfaces are around the country I suppose it helps not having reserve team games, training or rugby games to contend with but this doesnt excuse some Premier clubs. Well done to the groundstaff at SMS
pangy Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Old Trafford is usually one of the worst this time of year,2nd richest club in the world and a pitch that resembles a sunday league playing surface
lifeintheslowlane Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 One thing I always find very odd...even on a day like Saturday when we had a huge amount of overnight rain and more in the morning...do they find a need to turn on the sprinklers to water the pitch. Yes because JRod would get knee burns from his celebration on Saturday.

Well done to the groundstaff at SMS Watched the Everton v Man City game earlier in the day and was surprised how crap the pitch was, ours is one of the best in the country by far. One thing I always find very odd...even on a day like Saturday when we had a huge amount of overnight rain and more in the morning...do they find a need to turn on the sprinklers to water the pitch. Found that odd as well, there was enough water overnight in the area for loads of amateur games to get called off.

I'd imagine it is because the drainage at St Mary's is good and the rainfall before the game would quickly move away from the surface. The sprinklers are used close to kickoff so the surface is slick for quick passing during the game.
Greenridge Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 Yes because JRod would get knee burns from his celebration on Saturday. Quite a few of our players were going A over T especially during the first half. It did seem a tad strange to have it so heavily watered but it seemed to do the trick! The Kraken Posted 18 March, 2013 Share Posted 18 March, 2013 From back at the Dell and through to St. Mary's we've consistently had a good pitch. We probably benefit a little from the weather compared to the northern clubs, but hats off to our groundstaff down the years. Nerd fact; the St. Mary's pitch is a slight rarity in the PL as it was designed and built to be level. Most other pitches have a camber in them to allow for drainage, but we have a fairly hi-tech drainage system which negates the need for a camber and allows for a completely flat playing surface.
